Other Games / Re: TERA: Rising
« on: August 02, 2013, 11:14:40 am »
I'll be getting a new computer in September at the earliest and Tera was one of the games I wanted to try, and if I can get a machine that is able to run Tera on a budget of $250 USD you might be able to count me in as a Sorcerer of some kind since I like DPS magi and/or glass cannons.
Well, it certainly is an eye-candy game (in more ways than one), but if you turn down the settings, on a $250 machine, I have no idea whether it'll work or not.  Check the system requirements on the web page for the game?
I'm getting a refurbished Windows 7 gaming desktop or laptop for $250 at most so hopefully I can get something which has good hardware for a change. I mean if I can at least meet the minimum specifications and exceed them I'll be okay to get into TERA but if not then at least I'll be able to play other games I want to play. I'm just saying that if I can get a machine which can get into TERA then count me in as a Sorcerer of either the High Elf or Elin persuasion.

I'll take fetch quests to Everquest any day. Anyone here know if there is some specific racial requirements for Sorcerer? I kind of want to play either an Elin or High Elf Sorcerer if I'm able to get into this game when September comes around and was wondering if there were said racial requirements.
Any race can be any class.  The racial abilities are on such long cooldowns as to not really factor into decision making.  Except for any passive abilities, that is.  If you're really trying to min/max, then I'd say:
Aman - Lancer
Castanic - Slayer/DPS

The other races don't really give significant enough bonuses to factor in to class picking.  Yeah, High Elves seem to be the mana-oriented race, but they have a 2-hour cooldown ability to refill your mana bar, and an ability to regen mana faster ... after you've died and been rezzed.  Not exactly game breaking.
I just want to play something that is cute and aesthetically pleasing, which is really my preference for most races in MMOs when favored classes aren't available or are not part of the mechanic. Hence why you'll see me play either an Elin or High Elf Sorcerer if I'm able to get into TERA.

I think I need to get some more sleep instead of sleeping for like five hours like I did last night because god damn I hate these sleep-deprived hallucinations. There is no way in hell there are that many werewolves in my apartment.

My buddy tried to get me into this. Came in expecting tactical and action-oriented combat, got ludicrous amounts of fetch quests :(

[SNIP]Extremely long introduction/"easing in" periods[/SNIP]
Some people tell stories one way while other people tell stories another way, though I can understand your dislike of such things. Sometimes it gets a little repetitive going through the prison ship for the fortieth time or being allowed to live because some Anarch cried bullshit for the twelfth time and quite personally a lot of these games should have an option to skip the introduction cutscenes after having been through them once already. Most of them don't which in hindsight kind of makes me not want to play said games over and over again without taking months of rest in between playthroughs.

At least most of these character building cutscenes aren't god-awful tutorials that make you want to sterilize yourself in hopes that you don't spawn something which makes said god-awful tutorials when it finishes the maturation process. I might seriously consider disowning my offspring if they did such a thing. Wouldn't go through with it though a large sum of money might tempt me.

The latest incarnation of the grey elven wizard Ilia De'Catense managed to get to the tenth floor of the Infinite Dungeon she is so fascinated with before being eviscerated by a dark elven priestess who was likely a member of the Wu Tang Clan due to her being "ain't nothin' to fuck with". That's a new personal record, though I am going to have to clone her for I think the thirtieth time now.

It pisses me off when I get into a game and there is no option to skip the tutorial, and angers me even further when the tutorial treats you like you're retarded or at the very least full-blown Autistic. Kind of makes me not want to play the game after the fact because of how the fucking assholes in development decided that they wanted to be condescending towards the intelligent players who might actually know how to play video games and/or may want to figure shit out on their own, but then again most games today are made for the casual audience so I find myself getting upset about this kind of shit a lot in recent years.
Hey, Press B to jump! Now I am going to give you 10 seconds to jump, keep listening to me talk very sloooooowly!
It's that kind of shit that makes me want to force-feed a company of South Korean game developers through a meat grinder and use the results to make pie right about now, because at least the god damn pie wouldn't be condescending towards intelligent and/or veteran players of the games that they make and often times fuck up horribly with shitty and unnecessary updates.

I hate the Mabinogi tutorial more than any other tutorial in any game I've ever played. Why the hell did they have to make such a causal thing? What the hell was wrong with interacting with the NPCs and asking them about Skills and what have you? Why the hell do they have to treat you like a retarded moonchild and force you into the tutorial without any option of perhaps skipping it? I like the rest of the game except the god damn tutorial and maybe the frequency of events in the game and how said events make most parts of the game unbearable to be in.

Oh, and look for Malkavmaddie on Alexina I guess. I won't be on too much until I'm more or less taken care of on the computer front and don't have to spend twenty minutes just to get to the login screen, but I might be there I guess.

...the problem I believe, is that he's using a computer old enough to be steam-powered
I see what you did there and I fucking like it. Give this man an internet.

Wait, you think slotting in RAM is complicated? Look at some videos, its pretty much "push into slot and only fits one way", even with the old stuff.
well clock speed and latency matter, compatibility with your old ram, compatibility with your motherboard and CPU, which slots you put it in.  its not intuitive, and documentation for your motherboard isnt always easy to find or well written.  not trying to scare anyone off, but its easy to get wrong.
I've got everything down except whether my computer will accept Lo-DIMM or Hi-DIMM and seeing as Amazon.com last I checked was reluctant to divulge that bit of information on the RAM and I can't seem to find out what my computer takes online that's part of what got me a little worried about doing that kind of an upgrade. Plus I am more-than-likely going to be getting a modern (read: Windows 7 32-bit) desktop or laptop in a month at the earliest thanks to finally having some extra money by that time and this computer has a problem with a Bipolar PSU fan.

It spends about a week to a week and a half on average working just fine when all of a sudden it starts to make grinding and buzzing noises and often requires being started manually at least two or three times during the course of half-a-week to a week. I know, I need machine oil for the bearings or some shit but I don't even have a screwdriver which can open this god damn machine's PSU and I think these days they don't make the kind needed for this kind of operation. I could be wrong because I know almost nothing about screwdrivers but the fact of the matter still stands that it's not a flat-head nor a plus-head and that worries me.

It won't hurt to at least buy Shadowrun Returns on Steam when I get the money though since at the very least I could download it onto another computer after having made the purchase since it would be locked onto my Steam account or some shit. I'm new to Steam and in fact have had an account for maybe less than a week and a half and have bought maybe one game that was on sale at 75% off so I might be wrong though. I'm behind on the times and this newfangled shit confuses me.

Besides, I love me some cyberpunk - one of my favorite authors as of late is William Gibson - and I've been a fan of Shadowrun since I was introduced to it in junior high when one of the kids in my special education class brought in a portable TV, a Sega Genesis, and Shadowrun for the Genesis. I even have the fourth edition core rulebook, and a hardcopy at that. I think that even if I don't like the game it will be worth it spending some money on Shadowrun Returns because I think I probably will like said game despite my experience with Shadowrun being limited to console games and MUDs.

You should just be able to extract the installer as a folder and then just run it once you move it where you want it to be. I have no idea where that registry editing comes from.
Well it's a lot simpler than I made it out to be but it's still kind of annoying having to go into regedit for a game I used to meet the recommended specifications for. I do it because it's one of the few MMOs that keeps me coming back for more, and it has since a little after Open Beta got out.

I wasn't a beta tester but my god I remember when you saw people with "the Beta Tester" title on Mari all the damn time. I keep on making new accounts though since I've got shit memory and as a result I forget my log-in information if I don't write it down somewhere. I'll be back ingame somehow with a new account since it's happened yet again, but at least this time I didn't lose around $200 of virtual goods like I did on at least two or three of my other accounts. I've spent maybe $500 on Mabinogi since I started buying NX in 2009, mostly on pets and rebirth cards.

You people play on Alexina right? I might be able to get set up there again within the next month or two, but don't count on it for sure since my memory is shit and half the time if I don't write it down or ask someone to remind me I forget within about twenty or thirty minutes. Hope to see you guys ingame soon, after I fix the latest fuck-up my computer is having.

Believe it or not my computer at this time meets all requirements but that one.
Not uncommon.  You might be able to play it anyway, RAM is...weird.
I'll keep that in mind, though I still plan on getting a new machine in September. Between that, several anime titles and a copy of Vampire: The Masquerades: Bloodlines and maybe a copy of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 I'm going to see if I can fit Shadowrun Returns in there somehow.

Fortunately, RAM is cheap and easy to install, so just make a trip over to your local computer shop and buy a few sticks. That should get you ready.
Only Amazon.com has PC133 SDRAM for cheap, and I'm not confident enough with my computer hardware skills to install said RAM. If it were as simple as slotting a GPU or a WIFI card into a PCI or AGP 8x slot then I might give it a shot but right now it looks like I'll be replacing this machine from 2001 with something more modern in September.

Dark elven priestesses must have membership within the Wu Tang Clan, because they ain't nothin' to fuck with. Now there's one less Ilia in the world, which is a damn shame because now I have to clone another one.

When you have to extract the installer as a ZIP file and edit the registry to get the game to work after recent updates have made the game require a machine twice the capabilities it did just three years ago. What the Christ Nexon? I shouldn't have to do this after having played Mabinogi since three months after Open Beta.

Installing manually and move it to your steam folder if you really want it on steam.

Also, watching the korean videos of things yet to come is depressing. Seriously, look how SMOOTH it plays!

Also, magic knuckles will either be gatcha or part of the hero card set only. So it'll be like 5mil in the least.
It won't install manually on my machine. I had to extract the installer as a ZIP file then edit the registry to get it to work the first time. My machine used to be able to run Mabinogi at recommended settings back before Pioneers of Iria came out and now I'm finding I can't even install the damn thing without risking some kind of damage to said machine's OS. Nexon pls.

I have joined Brodgar! Just to bump the topic. Community is really rewarding, depending on how well you give and take with your valuables. To conclude this, I am on me way to make a name for meself around the town. I am proud to be a Brodgarian.
Several people likened Brodgar to Detroit after someone posted this screenshot on /vg/.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Do you find this to be the case in light of this imagery or in spite of this imagery? I ask because I might head towards Brodgar if I decide that when getting back into the game I bore with the whole hermitage thing as I might eventually. Also I've never been to Detroit. Is it lovely this time of the year?
