"He felt free remembering clothes rot off of his body."
Funny thing, I was just giggling at the exact same quote in my fort. Can't really criticise the dwarves, though; I really should get my textile industry in order. Wear and tear has been... higher than expected lately.

As Uz is the only masked lovebird person in the fortress, her eggs aren't fertilized, but still it was quite a shock...

Another thing I noticed was that she isn't staying to incubate the eggs but goes immediately back to sparring after dropping her load off to a nest box. I wonder if it's currently even possible for egg layer citizens to reproduce in Fortress mode?

Fairanvils, 2nd Felsite, 433

Uz Fatalmerged, a masked lovebird woman mercenary, applied for residence few years ago. I found the idea of tiny, flying mascot for militia hilarious, so naturally I accepted and recruited her to one of the squads. She seemed to have trouble with heavy armor so I had a set of tiny candy armor (awww!) custom made for her, and since most weapons are two-handed for masked lovebird... persons, I found an iron whip for her to train with.

That proved to be a great idea. As soon as she gained some skill with her new weapon, she started wreak untold havoc to armies laying regular sieges to Fairanvils. Indeed, the last thing many a goblin ever saw was something bright and colorful flying overhead, lashing from above through helm and skull like nothing.

But, it seems that even scarred and feathered death incarnates do, er, feel the urge from time to time. I only just noticed Uz going to a nest box and laying five "masked lovebird woman eggs" into it. Moments later a hauler came in and carried the eggs to a stockpile. Looking into stocks I saw that the stockpile had through the years accumulated quite a pile of these eggs, and that many of the eggs had found their way into roasts.

Apparently dwarves do love a good egg roast.

Dropping dwarves few Z-levels seems to cure tantruming. I don't know why that works, but so far three out of three tantrumers have snapped out of it after falling on their heads from a retracting bridge. I have to try if it cures depression and obliviousness as well.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Monster Slayers killing animal people

Visitors can't understand the difference between a dangerous monster loose in the fortress and a dangerous monster being safely transfered and will attack immediately if they see either. It seems that monster slayers behave the same even when granted residence. Yes, I think it's a bug.

This annoys me to no end since my forts tend to make good use of captive monsters. I've had to build whole separate airlocked visitor areas to avoid my valuable wild critters getting slaughtered.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: That First Werecreature....
« on: August 31, 2018, 05:54:27 am »
Weres will approach stealthed, but will attack the first thing they encounter and will reveal themselves when any living creature belonging to your fort notices them. So pen/pasture some expendable animals to strategic approaches to act as early warning and meat shield for your dwarves. Or, if you have no regard for visitor safety, designate an outdoor tavern to cover your entrance.

Once the were reveals itself, it's just a matter of getting your dwarves back to safety and deploying your defences. For weres even a single drawbridge is a suitable defence, but it's always good to have a militia squad training as soon as possible. Most weres are easy meat for even moderately experienced soldiers. If you don't think your troops are not yet up to it, remember that you don't have to fight weres, just delay them a day or two. They'll turn back into naked and confused humanoid soon enough and will flee to ravage your fort some other day.

Oh, and since weres will attack anything they encounter, keep a watch on combat reports. If you see a visitor getting mauled by seemingly thin air, it's time to hit the civilian alert and prepare your defences. That's a were en route to your fortress, just pausing for a quick stealthy snack.

Nah. He'd been hanging on by a thread for weeks, so when he saw a grate opportunity to improve his stitchuation he just grabbed it.

Here's hoping he doesn't bone this one up, eh?

Luckily he kept his head and made a dwarf bone helm out of a passing low-skill farmer. I'd leather not have even such an unimportant dwarf carved up; I barely have a skeleton crew keeping the fort together as it is.  Ah well, no skin off my back if you know what I mean.

How sad it is that Dwarven society ostracises those who the gods choose for the Fell Mood and yet hypocritically put their wares into good use. Next time you admire a fine dwarf-bone cabinet, spare a thought for the ruined lives that brought about it's existence. #moodingisntmurder

Well, I decided to let bygones be bygones and allow her in. About a week later:

Erush Zestum, Weaver cancels Sleep: Taken by mood.
Erush Zestum, Weaver looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!

Um. There's no connection, right? It's - it's not contagious or anything?

Fairanvils, 22nd of Slate, 426

A single migrant arrived. Avuz Trottedrag, a Legendary Bone Carver, had made her artifact 38 years ago. She also has a single kill to her name, also from 38 years ago... her husband.
Yes, it appears she had a fell mood during worldgen and turned her husband into a dwarf bone grate. I'm not sure I want to let her in to my fortress, Legendary craftsdwarf or not.

It's a bug. He was a spying (for your civ), then when the game (incorrectly) picked him to migrate to your fortress, he retained his fake name and profession. If he has a spouse, she'll most likely note his real name in her thoughts (and the fake name in her relationships list).

So, although he says he's a monster slayer, please keep him away from the caverns...

Yes, I noticed that when I played some more after posting. According to Legends he's been a busy little spy in a nearby Human civilization.

It wouldn't be useful using him in anything fighting related anyway: he's so weak he can barely carry his own clothes without slowing down.

A dwarf with profession Monster Slayer came in with the latest wave of migrants. Actually he is a Legendary Stone Crafter and appears among the craftsdwarves in the unit list, but apparently Monster Slayer overrides any ordinary title. His character color is also yellow, despite any changes to his status.

One exception to work gear vs. military gear: mercenaries granted residence in the old fort do bring all their gear when migrating to your new fort.

I've been thinking about trying my hand at this succession game business for some time now. Got room for one more?
