DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Necromancer training room
« on: January 26, 2018, 02:18:05 pm »
Hmmm, what would happen if you had  the corpse pile between the GCS and necromancers... Would it be possible to instantly web the reanimated corpses?
They would get webbed only after moving one square. Cage traps would be better as they'll snare the zombies immediately when they reanimate.

In my experience having a member of militia visible to the necromancer has been enough to trigger reanimation, but it might take one or two game days before they react. I'm guessing spending too much time with only zombies as company makes you really, REALLY slow-witted.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My dwarves are fighting a strand of hair.
« on: January 22, 2018, 12:52:08 pm »
Do these hairy golems have even any body parts? To me they always look like a single-part entity. I don't know how they are killed, apart from "pulping". Normally separating a head from upper body, or destroying upper body, would kill anything, but these hair don't have such things, I think.
Yes, they do have a full set of body parts which can fly off in an arc just as easily as with the whole creature. Decapitation "kills" the hair but even then the head hair can be re-reanimated. Then the head hair will have all the detachable features like nose and ears intact, like an ordinary head would.

Apparently 1-year-old Dwarven Children can have Fell Moods. And actually nearly kill a guy.

Wait. So fell moods can actually fail because the moody dwarf can't kill their victim? I thought that was an automatic 100% kill every time.

Could an array of mist generators be placed in a narrow hallway so it would hit 100% of passing dwarves? That would clean them up nicely, at the cost of some task cancellation spam.

Penned some assorted poultry to an undersea tunnel far below the sea floor. As always, they immediately started scratching up vermin... which turned out to be live mussels and oysters. I'm going to set up some animal traps next; maybe I could use this as a method of fishing?

Wait till it freezes next and seal off the exposed Aquifer? Might take awhile, but if you want to keep playing it may be worth it.

That's my current plan, whenever this game manages to ooze into next winter. Haven't had this low FPS since the Circus came to town last time.

Took advantage of ocean freezing solid to do some extensive digging operations for my undersea fortress. Come spring, I notice the whole ocean draining into now exposed aquifer. Ow, my FPS.

Also, don't lock your doors. Pets will kill your fps trying to path through them.
Or, don't just pet lock (key "o" in door settings) them; use "l" as well if you have to. It seems animal pathing ignores pet locked doors and that leads to heavy pathfinding spam when the animals can't actually move through them.

EDITmore:

OH HEY! My 126 year old dwarf just gave birth! I guess they go sterile at a later age then.
Do dwarves ever go sterile from old age?
no

I thought they wouldn't get pregnant/married or something past a certain age.

No, all creatures can conceive and give birth right up until they keel over from old age. I once had a 170 year old couple give birth; when the spring rolled over seven and half months later, the baby was naturally orphaned.

For some reason that fort had a lot of 150+ year old migrants, and once they had settled in, they started making babies like there's no tomorrow (and for some of them, there wasn't!)

It's very tough to get playable civilizations to survive more than few years in high-megabeast world gens. I have usually settled with 10-50 year histories to get the monster densities I want in similar scenarios.
See this thread for some ideas how to set up the world gen parameters.

Oh hey, looks like little Sazir Dotshot has a friend!

EDIT: There was some stuff here about bugs, but it looks like others have already explained it better in this thread. A rare but funny bug in any case.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tavern Visitors Fending Off Sieges?
« on: December 05, 2017, 03:30:51 am »
Yes, they can; a tavern full of visiting mercenaries can be an integral part of fortress defence.

Once I had a zombie siege visit during the first spring. When they just wouldn't bugger off after a year, I finally in desperation designated an open air tavern over the area they were milling around. Incoming visitors gradually whittled the horde down so I could resume normal fort building.

This time it was strangely different , as it "only" became atrocious to play in a short area of that site , and it wasn't even in the dark fortress.

Can you remember what time of day it was at that point? I found it surprisingly manageable in that one Dark Pit (out of three) I happened to visit night-time when everyone was sleeping. Also much easier, speaking strictly challenge-wise.

...on the other hand I have to admit, sneaking around in goblin tunnels strangling sleeping trolls to preserve their bodies pristine for necromantic rituals made me seriously question what am I doing with my life. Never again.

With new version out I decided to try adventuring again. Created a dwarf, decided to first go scouting around nearby necromancer tower, and to my surprise I found out I could clear it out right away. Armed with secrets of life and death I raided few Dark Pits for zombie material and ended up with an army of over hundred goblin and troll zombies. With my horde I decided to visit the Vault I had stumbled upon on the way and simply walked over all the guardians to the slab. Unfortunately the demon bound to the slab was murdered twenty years ago by a Human farmer, so I can't quite finish this perfect run.

Now what? Is it just me but does adventure mode seem a lot... less deadly in this version? I clearly remember the countless times I got my spleen handed on a platter by the first critter I encountered in earlier versions.
