It's their language.  All the Finnish troops had to do was talk over loudspeakers.  They have an innate resistance to the effects, but the Russians were unprepared and were unable to defend themselves.

But can you really say that DF dwarves are Tolkien-based?  Sure, we all start off imagining the dwarves as those popular fantasy bearded warriors, but after a while of playing you begin to seriously doubt whether or not the common fantasy dwarf could perform such acts of utter stupidity.

I have seen dwarves in many games, but I have only ever seen Dwarf Fortress dwarves in Dwarf Fortress.  They are a unique breed of idiot that is utterly unique to this game.

The Germans had better better technology, high morale bordering on fervor, very good discipline (for their above-average troops), and intelligent tactics.  The Russians used potatoes for grenade practice.  Somehow, they still beat the Germans.

I think that they were probably just disorganized...  For all their rigid training and unquestioning obedience, they didn't have the most mentally stable leaders.  And, they had supply drains from within as Jewish rebels gathered strength and fought back.

At least Australia is safe.  Now those lads knew how to be grateful!

Well, there was that thing with Churchill (maybe) blowing up a U.S. ship to get them to move their asses over to Germany and help out.

"Dwarfs" is the correct term when referring to actual people afflicted with Achondroplasia Dwarfism.  "Dwarves" is the term used when referring to bearded alcohol drinkers in fantasy literature, at least after Tolkien introduced the word.  All fantasy Lit. before that time used "dwarfs".

I prefer "dwarves", but so long as it's not "dorfs" I'm cool with it.

DF General Discussion / Name The Woodsman!
« on: March 24, 2008, 12:47:00 am »
Okay, for those of you who have been following along with what little of "the Woodsman" there is to follow along with, you may notice he hasn't mentioned his name.  This is because his name is "Whipping Machineblock".  Not very heroic, tragic, interesting, or even woodsy, now is it?

Here's the deal.  I recently picked up the lovely primed-and-packaged dwarf companion .10, and I now have the ability to change this blighter's name.

Thing is, I don't know what to call him.  That's where you come in.

The name should be in dwarven, should not relate to you, and should fit in with the overall atmosphere of what this guy's going through, although not too much.  After all, it's not like he was *made* to get lost in the woods, now was he?...

You want a reward?  He's going to casually slip in his name at some point later on in the story when he's introducing himself to someone.  There's your bloody reward.  The winning name will not be stated until that part of the story comes up, and it may not even be one of the suggested names.  I just need something cooler to call this guy, and I want help with it.  If the help provided is simply inspiration and not a full product, that's perfectly fine by me.  Hell, it's better by me, because I won't feel like I'm ripping someone off.

If I come up with something on my own, which was not inspired by anything in this thread, I will write a notification here, so as to avoid post-decision entries.

I'm missing something here...  This is what trolls exist for, how would feeding them make them go away?

I figured that Armok was basically the forum's mascot...

And he can be overly arrogant at times, often assuming more authority than he actually has (for instance, the act of registering under the name "Armok"), but  he's really not bad enough to warrant some of the hits he gets from time to time.  Sure, I've wanted to post similarly aggressive opinions against him, but that's in-the-moment stuff and can easily be avoided for the sake of preserving the community.

Toady does read things outside of the bug reports and suggestions forum, and he's not adverse to the occasional well-written paragraph.  However, he probably does not assign nearly as much importance to most of the stories since he's looking at it from outside our little hyped-up group of worshipfulness.  When you stop being so excited and just look in from the outside at some of these stories, they stop being quite so impressive.

I realize that I am one of very few people in that I have not finished reading any of the more "epic" tales.  I was mildly amused by Boatmurdered, sidetracked while reading Nist Akath, and unimpressed with both installments of the Kobold's Quest series.  I keep quiet about such things, as I realize it would serve little purpose other than to cause unrest among the forumites, and that's not really one of my goals.

This forum really is an amazing place, and it has served as something of a safe haven from the rest of the idiocy "outside".  I try to keep this forum the way I want it to be, because I want to stomach being here for at least a while longer.  As such, I try to maintain my own gag order on controversial opinions, and I will try to resolve whatever conflicts are in my power to resolve -or at least calm down.

We can feel bad about whatever information may be lost on a forum transfer, but we will always make it through.  I would sometimes be relieved when a new version of DF came around, because it meant I had a reason to do away with all of the old half-completed fortresses and ideas in order to make way for new ones.  Regardless of what happens or what software powers the forum, the members will always try to preserve the incredibly refreshing decency of our little half-crazy community.

I think it's about time this ended.

Oh yeah, that's right, you said that you were "too close to thirty for comfort" in the age thread.  I'm not sure why I was remembering you as 36.

EDIT: Oh, wait.  Three twelve-year-olds.

He says no, he's a middle-aged guy who went through a divorce and had to fight for  child custody.

Everybody else says yes.

No, he's doing it because he thinks it's innately funny.

He's not spouting individuality, he's just coming up with an argument against you by trying to make you out as a totalitarian figure who demands that everyone plays exactly by his rules.  By doing so he hopes to gain support in his side of the argument, removing your credibility and allowing him to continue doing as he had been doing before, only without you to hinder him.

Just for clarity, which Romero we talkin' here?   ADHD Zombie-flick Romero, or DooM Romero?  Or cuban disc jockey Romero?  'Cause he's pretty cool.
