The damage is theoretically going to come from the gas given off by burning the vinyl chloride. I know some animals have died, but mostly birds who are very vulnerable to airborne toxins. Byproducts are supposed to be Hydrogen Chloride gas, which turns to acid when it contacts water like the fluid in the lungs or eyes, and phosgene, which was used as a weapon in WW1 because it's toxic and heavier than air so it pools in depressions which made it great for filling up trenches.

No idea what quantities of either gas are going to be like, small amounts of either are mostly harmless, not pleasant or safe but mild exposure won't cause severe health problems, but I wouldn't want to be in an area of low ground downwind of the burn.

Train company is going to face one doozy of a lawsuit regardless of anyone getting sick though.

I mean, what do you actually do to plug that potential gap anyway?

Aren't weather/spy balloons pretty hard to detect with the equipment that's good at detecting everything else? Low emissions, low speed, operate high above normal operating altitude for drones or vehicles. Anything tailored to plug detection or destruction issues caused by balloons would probably be fairly useless otherwise wouldn't it?

He's asking if we're siding with NATO because NATO is the dominant power, and therefore dominant viewpoint from a certain perspective, of the world, and would switch sides if we percieved the other to be stronger, specifically in the hypothetical event of China eclipsing the Western powers.

It's not a sensible question to be honest, because I imagine most of us haven't picked a side based on strength anyway, but rather ideals that are more commonly protected by Western powers than others.

Depends on the placement and size of the hospital. The one in my town has one proper entrance and a few intended for patients with specific conditions, as well as staff access doors, but it's built tall rather than wide and only has parking at the front. The one in the next town over is built wide and has something like five entrances IIRC.

I think a piece of a model has pinged behind the fish tank and terrariums when I was cutting it from it's sprue. It's about 3mm wide and my carpet is grey, so I may never find it even if I pull the terrariums forward.  :(

Luckily it's not a vital piece, but it does go on the shoulder of the model so it's going to be obvious it isn't there.

Under the right water conditions lead pipes are fine. Once a layer of scale forms (which is pretty fast depending on your water) there's little risk of lead poisoning unless you put something in that dissolves the scale and exposes raw lead/lead oxide.

For a pre-industrial society it's basically perfect. Not suited to the modern day, when pipes aren't just always running fresh water from a mountain spring or whatever, but they worked fine for their time when in the right places.

I can't really imagine a spy balloon can do much that a satellite can't these days, and China isn't exactly scarce on the resources needed to send spy satelites into orbit. Seems like empty posturing more than anything, possibly for internal purposes. I could easily see some espionage branch that needs to justify it's budget doing a largely useless excercise to keep it's spending up.

I caught myself thinking the words "I wish I was nonbinary"

Like

Brain do you understand the implications of that or are you just gonna remain clueless lol

Might be worth exploring the thought further, if the idea actually interests you.

Oh yeah, the "Hang on, most men don't want to be women?" realisation was interesting.

I think in nearly 30 years of life, admittedly the first few not being all that complex in terms of thought, I've never wanted to be a girl/woman. I've idly wondered what it's like to be a woman compared to man somewhere under 10 times, mostly as part of discussions about the problems, physical and cultural, women face compared to me which in turn makes me think about the whole alien nature of specific human minds, but that's no more wanting to be a woman than I want to be a cuttlefish.

In a sense, I am a fairly typical specimen of a cis-man. Pretty much no interest in my feminine side, or any issues with my self perception as it relates to my gender and sex. Slightly camp at times, but that's a whole other thing.

Not sure it means everyone who questions their gender at times is necessarily not cis-gender, but it's certainly an indicator.

It can be weird sometimes, to think about how much our minds can differ.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After many months of being hit or miss with painting, I've wound up with enough motivation to actually finish up my Knight Abominant. Or nearly finish him up anyway, there's a few birds I need to find for his shoulders and he still needs transfers applied, but he does have arms now, which is a big improvement on the previous few months.

Next up I really need to knuckle down and finish Be'lakor, he's been waiting on being finished for a very long while.

The other option is that they become a paramilitary group at odds with their home state, which is what I expect Wagner to become the moment Russia stops backing them. They're going to either all end up dead or become something like the Freikorps that were running around Weimar Germany in the 20s/30s. Given their practices I imagine any convict sent to them is going to either be dead or be indoctrinated into their ideals by the time they would theoretically be free to leave.

It's widespread enough to have entered into several American comedy shows. Doesn't mean it's something pan-American or anything, but it means there's enough relevancy for it to hold traction as a joke.

If I were to hazard a guess it's probably something from Christian parents who don't want their kids to masturbate, like the hairy palms or going blind stuff.

I have hit a hiatus in my knowledge of the english language.
What does 'shaking at a urinal' mean?

Does this mean you hit the physcial urinal building until it's chemical contents spill over the street, or does this mean you are shaking your dick in such a way that your dick rain hits your urinal neihgbors?

Urinal etiquette in the American and somewhat in the British communities is that after you finish urinating you shake your dick (vertically usually) to get the last drops off to avoid any marks on your clothes, but no more than twice. Three or more times is considered to be impolite as it's considered borderline masturbation.

weird bug-eyed lizards that tried to inflict some sort of status effect.

Basilisks, a recurring enemy in the Souls games. In Elden Ring they inflict the Death Blight status effect, once it's maxed out you die as your body erupts in black thorns. It's a fortunately rare effect to face.

Fun quirk of the basilisks, the big googly eyes are fake, they have real eyes below and behind them. The big ones are some kind of false eye to distract or intimidate or whatever.

The defeat of Radahn letting the stars move implies on some level that all stars are beings akin to Astel, as one immediately falls to earth and exposes the path to the hidden city, which is evidently not an uncommon occurence for the underground cities. Meteors are implied to all be Fallingstar Beasts, which in turn become creatures like Astel. The association between the beasts/Astel and gravity magic, and Radahn's own mastery of gravity magic is a thematic connection.

I could posit that the very stars are perhaps hives of some sort, if not individual creatures. Cosmic nests from which the larval beasts rain down on the world as the Void seeks to consume creation. Perhaps it is by eating worlds that these creatures become new stars.

A comparison could be made to Lovecraft's work, which was a clear inspiration for parts of Elden Ring. The Outer Gods correspond to... well the Outer Gods, physical and mortal beings of extreme power, the FSBs, Malfomed Stars* and Astel would correspond to the various aliens like the Mi-Go, hostile and strange and with an unclear relation to the Outer Gods.

I see no clear counterpart to the Great Old Ones.

*The hanging upside down immature Astel like creatures.
