I thought of another solution to the housing issue, when I did some playtesting of my Norse mod I found a Longhouse style building to be very efficient for housing a large number of humans. Beds along either long wall each designated as a 1 tile room, a row of tables and chairs in front of each line of beds designated as a single dining room and a throne set up at the halls head. I built additional rooms on either side to store things as needed but it worked very well for a simple bed and dining arrangement.

I've taken a bit of time out from studying to check out options to fix the language problem. Sadly Faroese has the same problem as Norse, they lack equivalents for certain words in the DF language files so they get blanks when the word would be used. I've decided that to get around this problem I'll use either Norwegian or Swedish since they're ultimately derived from Old Norse but should have no missing words.

A force of Beakwolves has been sighted. We're rallying to drive them away with blood and iron. I feel elated at the chance to spill their vile blood upon the grass, like a vast fount of amusement is flowing into me at the prospect of battle.

Okay, they are NOT washing the well. Do you want everyone getting sick. Then again, that would be pretty realistic...

The well is built above a running river, it's more or less contaminant immune.

It needs to touch their skin to affect them. Let them out so they can go wash at the well.

NOOOO! We've lost a nameless redshirt!  :P

Real world humans have occasionally lived in underground rooms so I'm fine with it. Dig out a corridor and some cells or something beneath the main housing area.

We must be drawing on the non-historical population that civs have. Normally an extinct civ doesn't have any but we have it to make randomly generated bandits.

Good to see more little maniacs running around. Not sure what we can do about the migrants and housing though, the time it takes to make a house is a bit limiting compared to digging out a fort.

I'm thinking that it would be nice to expand the tavern out into a castle.

Ah, so much violence, we could do with more of this over in Bridgedstreams. :)

If the current wave is low on archers then get us bowdorfs to send them packing with a few volleys, not much point in risking deaths if we have a happiness problem in the fort.

Good luck killing off hundreds of peasants with forks.

Beware the forks of doom. Due to the way the game handles weapons forks and carving knives and such are very dangerous weapons.

As dogs and cats don't occur in the wild they all count as part of a civilization. This means that when you hurt them the civ becomes an enemy to you. Any peasants of that civ will attack you on sight with their deadly forks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Abandon fort... first migrant wave?

Yeah. I've had a few forts were early migrants were from older forts I'd abandoned. I remember reading about a fort that died because a berserk miner from the one before it migrated and killed everyone.

Hmm, I'd kind of like to get a chance to gut him in close quarters. Strip his gear and give me a hammer for a minute or two and we'll see how I fare.

Liz is back in charge. Good thing too, we need to remember just who has been in this whole thing from the start.

A bunch of flithy goblins attacked, a whole bunch of their trolls tried to batter down the doors but me and the lads gave them a good seeing to with our crossbows. Their blood was a most unusual blue colour, very light, smelt a bit like the taste of copper. The way they bellowed and roared in pain was almost melodic, quite enchanting really. I can't wait for more to try their hand at besting us, at besting me.

EDIT: I'm quite pleased that I have so many kills once you count non-notables. I'm becoming quite the ranged butcher aren't I?   :P

I gave birth today. Was rather surprised truth be told. Splint asked me what we'd call him, I decided on Athra Joytreaties. I decided to get back to sparring but it's rather difficult to hold my spear, shield and son all at the same time. I really should speak to the others about setting up a creche or something. Maybe later, for now I have training to do. When I don't train I feel... Watched.

So I've only gone and spurted out a sprog have I? Well we'd best see to it that the wee lad does alright. I propose we establish a nursery burrow to stick children in that keeps them away from the main gate. Hmm, wouldn't mind some kind of custom profession for the wee fella seein' as he's the son of the founder. Pride is a fault of mine and I'd like to see the first child born to my character stand out.
