We have about 7 elite soldiers with iron weapons and the only enemies that would show up at our current population wear no armour and use no weapons. We would butcher anything that isn't mounted, and a lot of things that are.

Going to guess that you're fairly new to the game if you've only just breached caverns.

First you need to get at least a few tunnels near your stairs walled off, you don't want beasts getting in from tons of directions at once.

Then you're going to want to trap the remaining tunnels, cage traps work best but some weapon traps would also do the trick.

Turn off automatic web collecting in your orders. I've lost tons of dwarfs to giant cave spiders because they were collecting silk.

Set up an open path to the water you want to use, put walls near it and traps on the waters edge, cave crocodiles and giant olms like to ambush from the water. They're good eating, but can rip through unprepared dwarfs like a scythe through wheat.

Keep an eye out for gremlins. Not really dangerous but a bit of a nuisance.

If your stairs are open to the air at any point wall them off, many a dwarf has dodged off the edge of stairs and died.

Hunters can be useful for keeping cavern animal populations down but some players prefer to send in the military to cull crundle swarms and trolls.

Dralthas make fantastic livestock when you adjust the grazer token on them. Elk Birds tend to be a bit lackluster in my experience, but I suppose they make a nice egg/meat animal when you don't have goats and sheep.

I remember from one of my previous mod binges that they make a great chicken replacement. I modded out the [COMMON_X] tags so that each race only had what was in their biomes, modded all exotics to normal pets and made crundles appear on layer 1, made some of the bigger beasts appear lower to avoid starting with giant cave spiders. War Crundles are surprisingly effective and they breed like rats.

Pity we can't really keep the Elk Birds. Damn [GRAZER] token.  >:(

We could still try for War Buzzards though.

I'm also very pleased to see more people poking their heads into our little town.  :)

I personally have no problems with digging deep. Not sure why the others are iffy about the idea. Though we do need to be careful since we have so few people and cavern beasts can be nasty.

The miners hit a large cave system below ground. Splint and I went in to make sure it was safe. The floor was covered in moss and large mushrooms were growing from the cavern floor. Some sort of thing attacked Splint, it had really long arms and tried to grab him but he made short work of it with his spear. We spotted a herd, or a flock I'm not sure, of strange bird things. Splint says he's going to call them Elk Birds and got some cage traps set up to try and catch some.

When I have the time I'll either make a semi-megabeast wolf with magic pelts or make a complicated reaction involving rare materials that makes berserker pelts. Although were-wolves and were-bears might be fun since I'm doing myth stuff anyway.

I'm fond of bringing some rocks and throwing a quick wall up around the wagon to make it nice and safe to unload stuff.
