We have been discussing annotating Nameless Archon's (aka Nirruden) tutorial videos in this thread:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=144721

In that thread, he announced a 24-hour Dwarf Fortress Tutorial LP event he will stream on Twitch, starting this coming Saturday morning.  See his original Reddit post for details:
http://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/2jit4r/nirruden_teaches_dwarf_fortress_for_extra_life/

It occurred to me that there is no general announcement on the DF boards yet.  That is now fixed.  If there is a better place to make this announcement, either let me know or move this topic there, please.

In my original reply message, added a partial transcription for video Part 07:

Posted about the Reddit announcement as a new topic:

Hopefully, this will bring more supporters. :)

...and now the bad news.

My wife has outfoxed me, and convinced me that starting a new tutorial video, to coincide with the launch of Extra Life 2014 would be a great thing. Not only could I do my tutorial on stream and get a more updated version, but I could collect for a charity at the same time, and help new players learn to play live like always: win-win-win! Since I couldn't think of a good reason not to do the right thing, I agreed.

So. Now comes the work part.

Before you consider starting to post pictures for this guide, let me ask that you consider cooling your jets for a week (Until ~8am on 10/26/2014) and I'll end up with ~24 hours of video for you to annotate, document, index, correlate, analyze, fold, spindle, and mutilate. In the meantime, I can scribble some notes about what I've done in this series, and use them to (hopefully) provide you with better quality material to work with. :)

This annotation's something I've wanted to do, but involves a tremendous amount of effort I haven't been able to invest and I really don't like the idea of any of your effort being "wasted" as annotating the series in this fashion will be a priceless benefit to any who might want to refer to the video!

Thoughts?

Wow.  Whoa.  and Wow! :>

There is so much Win in that whole concept.

Does your wife also play DF?  (Thanks, Matt's Wife!)

Does, "we'll start with worldgen (from predetermined settings)," mean that you will have a world generated at start time of streaming, or just that you will walk through your personal settings (like this original video set)?  Either way, I am curious what exciting developments may occur if you were to post the worldgen file/world save in advance of the live stream?  I can quickly imagine three things:  1) someone may chime in with story-building information, 2) someone may chime in with native creature reports, and 3) someone may chime in with "unrevealed" information.  Or, perhaps, you just want to keep the surprises to yourself until you get to them.  I'm just curious. :)

I don't see our efforts as a total waste.  At the very least, it is practice for Matt's DF2014LVT (Long Video Tutorial). :>

jwhite.df, if you think you will be interested in annotating for the LVT, I suggest making a new thread at that time (and please let us know where it's at).  If not, then I could do it.  I have an idea to arrange a topical outline format, after the chronological annotations are complete.

I hope the new DF version is out by then!

Edit:  changed "let me know" to "let us know."

I see you have already posted through video 6, and are likely now working on video 7, so I won't add more to this annotation list, but will look forward to possibly working on the future version, especially if it follows some sort of outline!

Well...

What I'm seeing isn't the same thing that someone else would see. For example, I completely skipped the military buildup. I still don't know when the smelter and furnace went underground. The volume of notes I took for part 4 is definitely low.

If someone with fresh eyes could watch it and pick out things I'm missing, that would be awesome. And the rate at which I'm able to annotate is pretty slow.

OK, I will look into it again, but it may be 2 or 3 days until I can focus on it.

I wonder if anyone has an interest in providing key screenshots?

I created a small script for Linux, which converts the timestamps in my notes into a URL.  In case that has value, I post it here.
Spoiler: index.txt.sh (click to show/hide)

I thought it was a worthy project, so I dug into it.  I came back to see if anyone were discussing the project, yet.
Wow, you've added LOTS more since I saw the first post!

I did the footwork here already, so I'm going to post it, in case someone finds it useful.
Feel free to edit this text in any way to fit into your vision.  If there is enough interest, I might continue.

That's awesome and amazing. I'll adopt your format too. Much better.
That makes my time seem well spent, thanks! :)

Part 2
01:28:28   Why Circles? Answer: Geometry
Yup, I LOL'd at that part, too.  A true minmaxer would be using a lumpy circle, recognizing that the distance to be calculated isn't from the center staircase, but from each of the four edges and four corners.

I see you have already posted through video 6, and are likely now working on video 7, so I won't add more to this annotation list, but will look forward to possibly working on the future version, especially if it follows some sort of outline!

Suggestion:  Use Spoilers (I've edited my first post), so as not to scare off potential readers.

Holy hell, guys.

Thanks for taking the time and effort. It's a slog to broadcast this much information (did I *really* talk for three hours before I unpaused? Apparently so!) and then have to go back to annotate and index it.

Before you get too far into this, though - you know I'm going to do another one in the future, right? There's a few things (even from this tutorial) I do differently, and the game's not "stable" (still more features to come) for v40 yet...

Edit: On the other hand, this will make a pretty good outline for the newer version, when I do one...
You have a great voice, a great presence, and a great presentation.  You also, clearly, have a lot of knowledge and experience.
This is a great combination!

I specifically remember my thoughts leading up to the Unpause mark:  This is a realistic time frame for me, even when not explaining. :>

I remembered that you clearly stated you planned to make another one later, but I felt this material you have presented stands on its own for now.  Besides, with the upcoming thoughts update, who knows how long until dfhack and Dwarf Therapist catch up?  Some people will stick with an earlier version until those have caught up.  Your video retains direct value to those players, while covering enough ground to have value into future versions for other players.

I did have the thought occur to me that your future version might benefit from this annotation, if you were to somehow learn of it.  Wow, you got here quickly!

Minor thoughts/ideas/suggestions/requests for future videos:
1. State the versions/URLs of the game/utilities you are using at the start of your video(s) and/or in your video text description.
2. Provide the world/region save at various stages for players to play along with the video.
3. If you decide to focus more on the tutorial aspect, consider splitting your videos into categorized groupings, i.e., "This video will delve into different farming techniques," or "This video will demonstrate different methods of military organization."

Edit 01, 2014-10-21:  Update code to VERSION=000.003.000.

I've personally found Nirruden/Nameless_Archon's Tutorial Night's the best "advanced beginner" resource I've come across.

If there's a challenge, it's the length. I haven't actually gotten through all the parts due to the density. I though it might be useful to have an an annotated guide to the playlist. There's been times in the past where I've thought, "Did Matt move his smelters/forges underground yet? When, and how?" Many eyes can answer questions like that, so I figured I'd donate what I've done to the group knowledge pool. I'm going to put my notes here in the first post and as others chime in, I'll maintain here in the first post.

I thought it was a worthy project, so I dug into it.  I came back to see if anyone were discussing the project, yet.

Dwarf Fortress 0.40.05 with Starter Pack r2

Disclaimer:  For the sake of visual flow and the sanity of my inner OCD Grammar Nazi, the transcription has significantly less accuracy regarding punctuation than I am comfortable with.  Liberty has been taken to exclude from the text, most "word whiskers" and unintentional false starts.  Any expletives (including euphemisms) have been replaced with, "***" (three asterisks); incomprehensible parts replaced with, "..??" (period period question question).  Any issues found will be HAPPILY edited away!

Edit 01 2014-10-16:  Put each video into a separate, titled spoiler.
Edit 02 2014-10-21:  Add preliminary transcription for part of video 07.

DF General Discussion / Re: Savescumming
« on: September 07, 2014, 04:43:33 pm »
I have been playing games (starting with peek-a-boo, perhaps?) for around 40 years, and so have definite opinions on what kind of gaming experience I want.

For any computer game that I really liked, which created save files, I wrote scripts to make backup/restore of those saves easy.  Sometimes, I used them to restore, but most often, not.  Why would I restore in certain cases?  Unwillingness to reinvest the RL time to regain the status? Science? !SCIENCE!? Curiosity for the alternate universe? Safety net against bugs? Safety net against accidental key press? Unwillingness to give up certain cool (i.e., fun) item? Share current world state with friends?  We could create a list of reasons to utilize saves, and a list of reasons not to.  In the end, it will ALWAYS boil down to personal play style preferences (for a single-player mode game).

Now, once you set up some sort of competition between players, then you will likely set up some rules to keep an even playing field; but then, you are not strictly playing the same game, any more, are you? You are now playing something else, something multiplayer, which has its own rules to follow.  Now, you get unquestionable reasons to enforce certain play styles.  Behold, the meta-game.

If you want to join in on the rules of a particular group's version of a meta-game, then GREAT!  Have fun!  If you don't want to play that particular meta-game, then don't; go find another meta-game, or just play your own single-player game as ... well, as a single-player game.  If you are playing by yourself, and for yourself, and not to compare your results in any sort of competitive way, then only you can decide for yourself whether your actions are cheating.

Established Consensus
There is already an established consensus that !SCIENCE! is a legitimate use case for restoring saves.  No other rational is necessary.  No meta-gaming group on these forums can reasonably argue against the pursuit of !SCIENCE!, or its usefulness in the fostering of a vibrant DF community.  From this alone, there is sufficient and compelling reason to seriously consider adding a save/restore functionality to the UI.

Pure
There is no need for one group of meta-gamers to denigrate another.  If any one meta-gamer group has a "pure" foundation from which to preach, it might be the group which makes ZERO changes to the game, playing as-is, without modifying raws (including for any init options), and eschewing any use of dfhack, Dwarf Therapist, tilesets, and any other unofficial add-ons.  Any other meta-game group is just claiming that their particular slippery-slope position choice is more solid than the next (with regards to arguments of "purity").

History
Many examples exist from the forums of the many succession games, many bug reports, and many research projects which benefit richly from the existence of save files, and which would therefore CLEARLY benefit from an official save/restore UI.  Really, if the person reading these words wishes to argue against all of that evidence, then that person is a truly unreasonable person with whom time will not be wasted.

Conclusion
To save/restore or not to save/restore, is a perfectly valid question, which can only be usefully answered by an individual player, or by a group of individual players with an internal consensus.  If, perhaps, you were a player who tried to force your personal save/restore preferences upon everyone else, then you were part of the problem, causing unnecessary conflicts.  But, now, maybe you can begin to realize that choice is really the only long-term solution.  With the existing OFFICIAL option for save/restore, anyone can play either way, and still be playing the "pure" game, as intended, and as provided for in the vanilla game.

p.s.
The only part of this post which I will direct towards an individual:
I find nothing conclusive in the fact that out of the handful of people that posted in this thread (out of thousands of players/forum dwellers), the majority appear to advocate a permadeath style that should never be abolished. One could even argue that the insignificant number of replies this thread got so far, is an indication that the majority of DF players 'couldn't care less' about this, which is not quite the same as considering permadeath as "essential for the pure dwarf fortress experience."
I hate (in a non-mean-spirited, playful kind of way) that you have compelled me to spend the time to write this post; I really wanted to do other things with that time. :)  But, some of the DF players do care a great deal about this topic, and have decided not to spend the time to write a post.  I do not read silence necessarily as an indication that the person "couldn't care less" (although I must admit to the general rule of, "silence is assent"); sometimes silence is more from apathy, rather than agreement.
Also, I will readily agree that I believe most players probably don't care much either way.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How Dwarf Obessed are You?

I don't have a problem, at all! :P

Currently, my "Dwarf Fortress" Firefox tab group only has 27 tabs open. *ahem*

Since I also use the "Tree Style Tabs" add-on for Firefox, I have several branches dedicated to ... oh, I mean, what was the question? hehe

I wrote a BASH shell script to automatically process new releases (so that options and raws are modified to my preferences), using git to track individual chunks of modifications.  Using git also makes it ridiculously easy to run multiple bug test runs on a clean install without cross-contaminating data and/or raws.

<rant>I had tried many SCM systems in years past, but nothing was as useful and trustworthy as just plain zip files or subdirectory copies -- until git!  Really, why would anyone want to inflict a tortured, git-less existence on any programmer, unless that programmer were your worst enemy!?</rant>

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Got wood?
« on: August 17, 2014, 10:04:27 am »
You would probably want to use stockpile links for limiting the usage of slabs.

Such as making one wooden-slab-only furniture stockpile linked to a nearby craftsdwarf workshop that exclusively makes elven memorials.

Thank you for working at this.  That works fine!  I sacrificed a miner for testing:
Code: [Select]
This is a well-crafted bayberry wood memorial to ezum Endokgikut.
The slab reads "In memory of ezum Endokgikut / Went missing in the year 5 / United with lace agate".

Now, just need to find me an elf ....

So, how does one mod to allow engraved, wooden slabs?

I did a case-insensitive text search through the raws for "slab," "engrav," "memorial," "workshop," and "mark," but found nothing relevant.

Slabs are hardcoded, and you will not find any engraving reactions within the raws.

What you were looking at in masterwork was a DFHack script that allows you to put custom writing on the slab, but I don't know much more than that.

All you need to do is create a reaction that makes a wooden slab, and give the dwarven entity the proper permission to use the reaction. Or if you are going to attempt to do this in an already existing game, then you must alter an already existing reaction instead, as you cannot add new objects into an already running game.

This reaction may suffice:
Code: [Select]
[REACTION:WOOD_SLAB]
[NAME:carve a wooden slab]
[BUILDING:CRAFTSMAN:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:1:WOOD:NONE:NONE:NONE]
[PRODUCT:100:1:SLAB:NONE:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[SKILL:CARPENTRY]

Just put this into one of the already existing reaction files, then add [PERMITTED_REACTION:WOOD_SLAB] to the dwarven entity. Now you can create wooden slabs at the craftsdwarf's workshop.

Well, that works as advertised. :>  Thank you for cooking that up.  However, I perhaps should have been more clear:  I was hoping to be able to Engrave Memorial Slab, but with wood instead of stone (to memorialize a dead elf's name onto a wooden slab, as discussed above).

I get a feeling that might not be so easy to accomplish. (?)

So, how does one mod to allow engraved, wooden slabs?

I did a case-insensitive text search through the raws for "slab," "engrav," "memorial," "workshop," and "mark," but found nothing relevant.

I also looked at the stone definitions, but see nothing related to engraving:
[INORGANIC:GRANITE]
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:STONE_TEMPLATE]
[STATE_NAME_ADJ:ALL_SOLID:granite][DISPLAY_COLOR:7:0:0][TILE:178]
[IGNEOUS_INTRUSIVE]
[IS_STONE]
[MELTING_POINT:11440]
[SOLID_DENSITY:2600]

I found this at the bottom of the [MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:STONE_TEMPLATE] paragraph:
Determines what sorts of objects can be built with the item.
        [ITEMS_HARD]
        [ITEMS_QUERN]
        [REACTION_CLASS:CAN_GLAZE]
But, again, nothing that seems directly related to engraving.

I don't see anything inside reaction_other.txt or reaction_smelter.txt which seems relevant.

Doing a few Google searches, I see mention that Masterwork has workshops which allow custom text engravings on slabs.
Inside the Masterwork raws, I found:
[REACTION:LUA_HOOK_SLAB_ENGRAVE_1]
        [NAME:Write on a slab1]
        [BUILDING:STILL:CUSTOM_S]
        [PRODUCT:0:100:BOULDER:NONE:INORGANIC:SLAB_ENGRAVE1]
I can't find any relevant "LUA_HOOK_SLAB_ENGRAVE_1" defining reference anywhere in all the Masterwork tree structure.

I don't know how to proceed from there.

Modifying as little as possible to get the effect requested by OP, open raw/objects/creature_standard.txt in a good text editor, and do two "Find and Replace All" actions:

Find:
Code: [Select]
[MALE]Replace with:
Code: [Select]
[MALE] [ORIENTATION:MALE:75:0:0] [ORIENTATION:FEMALE:5:20:75]
Find:
Code: [Select]
[FEMALE]Replace with:
Code: [Select]
[FEMALE] [ORIENTATION:FEMALE:75:0:0] [ORIENTATION:MALE:5:20:75]
As of vanilla v0.40.06, there will be 53 changes total (several creatures have only one gender, or even none).

Result:  Males will have 0 interest in males as lovers or marriage partners; females will have no interest in females as lovers or marriage partners.

Hopefully, you made a backup of the original file, in case you break something.

OK, I know this thread has gone far off Into the Woods1 from the original experiments, but I just had to say:

So, it looks like hundreds (thousands?) of whales are being killed (Sperm Whale-icide?), simply to understand a little bit more about how a dwarf is able to dodge such a huge thing and survive, for the sake of !!Science!!.  Fine (obviously).  But.  Will no prepossessing person ponder the pitiful plight of the pulped porpoises2?

What I mean, of course, is that shouldn't we also be wondering how such a huge creature can fall *from* *the* *«*sky*»* and ... fail to die ... SO spectacularly that, upon impact with the round ground, instead of silently thudding, it still felt physically vigorous enough to attack an opponent?  (Let alone increasing its power by transforming it into a flying volcano!)
