DF General Discussion / Re: found a rather strange piece of land...
« on: March 07, 2014, 08:35:05 pm »
The point is it ain't random, as it can be very easily be predicted using a constant.

...actually it is.

Quote
Probabilistic nature of half-life
A half-life usually describes the decay of discrete entities, such as radioactive atoms. In that case, it does not work to use the definition "half-life is the time required for exactly half of the entities to decay". For example, if there are 3 radioactive atoms with a half-life of one second, there will not be "1.5 atoms" left after one second.

Instead, the half-life is defined in terms of probability: "Half-life is the time required for exactly half of the entities to decay on average". In other words, the probability of a radioactive atom decaying within its half-life is 50%.

Half-life is constant, so literally the opposite of random.

That's...really an over-simplification...

Derail assumes there were rails. This forum is more like a fast-moving puddle of hot lard on a frictionless surface.

Or a bead of cold water on a hot griddle.

I love how 90% of that giant post has nothing to do with what went wrong and what he's doing.

So how did the whole magic quantum foam infinite energy device turn out?

And no, that really is their URL.

So basically yes, B&E will be useful. It is more dependant on the rest of the party than anything else.

Good to know.

Still, I'm jumping out.  I don't like SR5

Oh, just noticed you're doing SR5.

F*ck that noise, I'm out.  I have serious problems with a lot of things that they did from 4.

I didn't say no other abilities.
You even said that B&E is pretty broad anyway.  Which is why I asked.

If it will come up little to never, then there's no point.  If it'll come up frequently then it's something I can do.

I just have a character concept which I haven't gotten much use out of and wanted to try again.

Well, see, is an infiltrator going to be useful? ;)

That is, primarily B&E without much combat ability or social ability.  I've found it entirely depends on the game the GM is running, not the setting.

I know shadow run very well. ;) I asked because I have more specific ideas.

I have interest.
I'd need more detail to know what kind of archetypes would be viable.

Does anyone suggest any user-generated adventures?

Yes, that one. It has semi-random missions, from netrunning, bodyguard, courier work to infiltration of corps. You increase your reputation and get better shops and Johnsons. You get "story missions" when you get enough reputation for the next "level". It saves in any city district change, and you can explore pretty much every district from the start (tho most NPCs won't help you since your rep is not high enough).

The spelling can get really bad at times, but that's to be expected from a fan module.

DF Suggestions / Re: Improved Farming, Rebooted: Agricultural Revolution

Rez this thread, as this is relevant.

I have NPR on in the car and on You Bet Your Garden this last week, Mike McGrath briefly mentioned a topic on water harvesting / water conservation that I think is highly appropriate for DF.

The segment can be located at about 35 minutes in (there's a tall bar that stands out that is right at the beginning of the caller's segment, takes a few minutes for Mike to get around to the question) during which he talks about a chapter of this book.

He talks about using large, otherwise empty areas of land and stamping down the dirt to make it impenetrable and using it as a giant collection basin for a single tree, out in areas that don't get a whole lot of rain.  Which reminded me of when I was out in Israel and visited Masada.  They had a similar water collection system along the cliffs and hills:

This should definitely be something that can happen in Dwarf Fortress.  Right now we tap surface lakes and use them as basins of water collection due to how rain works, rather than being able to construct our own.

I'd like a "less noisy text area background" option.  The "Juliet Agency" section is a little difficult to read as there's a lot of text on a fairly complex background and the elements of each are a similar thickness.

That said, it is much improved.

Yeah, I forwarded it to my gaming group.  I don't think we have any need for more minis, but I figured they'd might at least take a look.
