Personally I think that the river rests on the main (ground) level of the mountain (that is, where ever your outside ground is, the same Z level) with a "chasm" type feature on the level or two above it.  The chasm goes all the way up and all the way down--gotta bridge over it every time.  The magma...hmm.  Makes sense for it to be down, but I don't see an issue with putting it on the same Z level as the river.

As for chanels, there should be a way to pump stuff "uphill."

As for "only flooding a few inches" means that each Z level would have to be only a foot or less worth of height (a dwarf standing 3-4 Z levels tall) whereas I see each Z level being a room+ceiling worth of height (so there is enough rock between a room below and a room above in a difference of 1 Z level)--option to make it a vaulted ceiling of course.

Size issues:
Maps above the current map would not need data on the outside, save a location for the cliff face.

Also, would it be possible to not even take up memory for Z levels not currently in use?
Maybe warn the user if they try to dig up/down and their PC doesn't have the resources?
That or on site creation a note "DF has detected that your computer can run up to X levels of fortress."  And then allocate either as needed (see above) or designate them automaticall (i.e. 6 -> 3 above, 1 ground, 2 below or whatever).

Yes!  This is actually why I popped into this board.  I have 2784 "food" (8 meat, 0 fish, 0 plant, 1097 seed, 270 drink, and 1409 other) and my dwarves are hunting for vermin.

Another thing I'd like to see is that when a cook finishes cooking they haul their own damnable meal to the nearest food stockpile before cooking another.  They're going there anyway, aren't they?!?
Right now I have two kitchens out by the forges so my miners and metalsmiths can have a quick bite to eat (instead of a 4 day round trip to the dining hall) and the meals are rotting in the kitchen.

F11 is currently full screen, and I believe I read that Toady can't change that, that it is inherint to the DOS window or something.

I managed to foget to count an already carved passage way and ended up with a 7x7 "room" (meant it to be 6x7).  Lost 3 miners.
Of course, I've now twice forgotten about a seige and didn't turn on the steam.  -8 dwarves.  Lost a legendary weaver via "stuck on the magma smelter" -1 dwarf (and now I can't find his corpse!).  Farm Flood accident (forgot to turn it off) -3 dwarves.  Briliant plan to use my army against a siege -15+ dwarves.  Tantruming dwarves because of the above, -20+ dwarves.

Not doing so well tonight, am I?
