DF Bug Reports / [39e] Beast cave in melting glacier filled with water
« on: August 03, 2008, 02:29:51 pm »
I posted this in the adventure mode forum and someone suggested it might be worthy of a bug report.  I did a quick search and found that the only underwater caves mentioned were spawned in the ocean.

This one is on a glacier.  The temperature around the area was not freezing though, so there were plenty of rivers flowing through the glaciers, bogging down my FPS.

Anyway, I was sent to kill a cyclops in this cave.

When I arrived, I came to a ... interesting sight.

The first floor of the cave had about 2/3 water, with the second floor ranging from 3 to 4 deep water.  The 3rd level was too deep for me to enter (I had no swimming skill).

Nothing was occupying the levels I went to, and I didn't get any "soandso has suffocated, frozen, drowned, etc" messages, so I assume everybody made it out okay.

I have a save of the world with an adventurer retired in a nearby village if you would like an upload, Commander Toady.

actually it wasn't completely filled with water, the first level had about 3/3 and the second was higher and i couldn't get to the third, i presume that because it was daytime the glacier in which it was embedded started to melt, and during the night it re-freezes.  the cyclops i was sent to kill was smart enough to be found outside!

Must be a real nice place to 'chill' during the winter ... WTF.

Well, I'm at the highest spot I've found yet and it's tapered off to about a 9 x 9 platau.

Ironically, as soon as I got up here, as a testament to how mild the weather has been on this climb:  It started raining.  Heh.

Made it across 6 mountain tiles and 6 high mountain tiles and haven't experienced a peak yet, mostly just craggy uphillish momentum.  I keep getting lucky and finding underground streams and stuff, but I'm down to one fish.  I've got some mud on my boots I can eat but, at this point, its certain I'm not getting out of this alive.  Still, I trudge onward.  No sign of Mr. Bigbird yet.

Has anyone ever even seen a strangler, or a blizzard man, or a grimeling?  It seems like some of the creatures are extremely rare.
I've seen a blizzard man! WTF is a strangler?

That's where you sit on your hand for about a half an hour and let it go numb before you ...

Wait ... Oh.  Sorry, I thought you said 'stranger'.  My bad. :-X

Decided to tackle a climb my own-bad-self, took just a regular old joe with wrestling/throwing and started hurling myself up the mountainside.

My journey started with an ominous portent ... I ran into a hydra.  Fortunately, I saw it before it saw me and I managed to sneak by it, but, it was nice to just run into a megabeast after randomly walking onto a tile.

Anyway, the journey has been, despite the dire portents at the beginning, pretty relaxing.  Walked through 4 mountain tiles and 1 peak tile heading towards a volcano deep in a mountain range.

Temperature at night still low enough to drink, found lots and lots of rivers to fill my skin up at.

I'm being watched by something virtually everywhere I go, but if it's a giant eagle, I haven't spotted it yet.

Right now I just had to eat and drink and dawn broke so I decided to sleep through the day to start the base of the next mountain at night.

I found an absolutely marvelous place to sleep: I'm right at the base of a 9 Z high waterfall sleeping in the mist.  Ahh.  Woke up without drowsiness, ready to rock.

Hooah!

Look I don't mean to be a dick but let's just look at the situation and find the answer.

It's fairly obvious: Toady needs to overhaul the user interface before someone else does or he will lose control of the project.

There.  It 'aint on us.  It's on him.

My favorite is to grab head with a hand, pinch nose, decapitate.

Best way to gain skill in a weapon is to parry with it.  Not sure if a whip works for th is, but, if you do it with a sword, you gain like crazy.

Step 1:  FInd an armed opponent, anything with a weapon

Step 2:  Put your shield in your backpack so you just have your weapon

Step 3:  Piss off guy with weapon and let him attack you, yo u should parry most of the shots if you're agility is high enough.

Every single parry gives you a point of weapon skill.

Hope that helps.

Not quite so easy for me to keep megabeasts as you ...

I set size to 50 and set the filter to 25%, the world gave up in year 37, so i set the size to 100 and i can usually make it to about year 500 with only 40% loss, but by no means 100%...

i did have some success making heavily populated metropolis type medium size worlds, with almost entirely urban road connected areas

Has anybody found a way to get a world with megabeasts that isn't in the year 1-20?  Most of the world's I've generated that allowed me to hunt megabeasts end in about year 8, and the cities are under construction and there are no roads or shops or even city capitols, just some half constructed hovels.

Is there a way to make a world where megabeasts survive into the 100th year or so?

Also, what would be a good set of parameters to get a world with some wars going on?  Usually the worlds I gen have such crazy overlapping areas of influence that you can't tell who is who and everybody is mixed with everybody else.  Sure, it's neat, but it'd be nice to be able to pick a side and go off to try and influence the world for them.

Any hints/tips on maximizing the new parameter tools to make a fun world to adventure in?
