Yeah I figured that out a while back, not so long after my post. Thanks anyway, though! Now my only problem is that the automated mines are unbearably slow. I'm mining the Venus neutronium deposits at 1 per year. On the bright side, it'll last me 36 million years at this rate...

Thanks! Now I just need to wait 5 years for my shipyard to add 5000 tons for a  cargo ship, while my neutronium deposits run out in 3...

How would I go about putting automated mines and mass drivers on another planet? I haven't the slightest idea how to put shit on another planet.

Wow, simple machine forums notification mechanics, thanks for telling me this thread was posted on 4 months after I left the page. I'm definitely interested in seeing it go on. Also wanna know if my character is still alive.

Is there any possibility that there was an NPR skirmish or war that the game wouldn't slow down for? I sent 4 scout ships across a jump point and found the wreckage of several "unknown class" ships. Thoughts?

Ah, I see. Thanks for the help, I just surveyed Venus so I guess I'll have to go with automated mines and mass drivers. Will the automated mines need upkeep of some kind while on a distant planet?

I'm gonna hope this thread isn't dead and just ask a quick question. After I've surveyed a planet for minerals, how would I go about to mine said minerals? Do I establish a colony or what?

My most recent adventure felt like a crime thriller movie instead of a short lived blood bath, always ending terribly on my part. It started pretty weird, though. From my starting hamlet (where I acquired two crossbowmen) I made my way to the capital, which was totally barren save the high priest who stood at the top of his temple like a lunatic, and the nobility living in the central keep. I traversed the woods, got ambushed by wolves, ate and drank and slept; the usual. The final goal was to make it to a large town, in hopes that it wasn't as depopulated as the capital.
Once I got there, I started asking people about the surroundings and of any service I can do to them. It was here that I started to hear a rumor about a vampire that's killed hundreds. After sticking my nose around the nobility and townspeople, I head north to the next town, where the vampire is supposedly dwelling. On my way there, I was ambushed by a goblin group, as if someone was trying to keep me out of business that isn't mine. I lost both my crossbowmen, and take an arrow to the right upper arm.
I escape to the closest hamlet, "rest" off my injuries, and recruit a father-daughter crossbow team. I get to the town, and have to locate the vamp in a leather shop. There are roughly 50 leather shops in that goddamn town. We find him, and he's with a peasant. I have a little chat, and finally reveal my intentions. He throws the peasant across the room, but does not kill him. Literally ALL the bolts that hit him were deflected by his leather vest. He manages to get to the young girl (further legends reading revealed she  was 14) in my team, and puts a carving knife through her head, killing here effective immediately. I've been too hesitant to charge with my sword at this point, but go in for a fight. I don't get to fight him, because my remaining crossbowman shoots him right through the eye. I retire, because this has been the only adventurer that hand a somewhat normal ending.

tl;dr - capital was empty, so I go to a town. theres a vamp nearby, I go kill him. he kills a 14 year old and her dad shoots him through the eyes. gg no re.

he's the kind of person who plays pokemon by just choosing the highest damage moves all the time. He's awful at it but it's an easy game and it doesn't matter so much

Ohhh, not easy if you're playing the competitive metagame!

Well, for a start you could read the OP.

I did. But at this point, I'm not sure if I can catch up with 114 pages worth of a succession game.  :P

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tales Of Warfare
« on: May 14, 2014, 11:55:37 pm »
Haven't faced any large invasions yet (only 3rd year in) but with my rising economy based on gold and silver crafts, bone crossbows, maces, and war hammers (it seems my civ is in high demands for weapons, almost as if preparing for a war), I'm sure to be invaded soon. I developed a pretty neat military build up so far. I have three squads, HIGHCOM being where my militia commander and heavier infantry is positioned. The First Knights, where I have a lighter spear/short sword regiment, and The Second Knights, where I have marksdwarves and light infantry for support. Planning on adding a fourth squad when my population reaches 90-100, having their barracks between the two cavern systems in my fort, and naming them DEEPCOM. So far, the line-up has worked out pretty well, taking out a variety of threats (petty fish people to troll infestations). I'll try to post as soon as I face an invasion!

This sounds like the basis for an excellent short comic strip, wherein keas routinely visit some plane of oblivion or whatever to drop off their shinies. Maybe they are secretly gods.

A kea god of war and fortresses is worshipped in my fort...

We know where the keas have taken the crown.

In this case, you should offer artifacts regularly.

Woah, woah. I opened this thread up to see what the dawn of time challenge was, and instead I find people posting about falcon monsters and sacrificing human followers. Better than expected. Give me explanation, or I provide devastation.
