DF Suggestions / Re: Ideas For a Magic System
« on: July 14, 2014, 06:15:57 am »
I'd like to see more ideas for magic tied-in with history.

For example, sword that killed 1000 goblins through the ages would earn a name and some advantage fighting goblins for the dwarf that becomes attached to it (sort of a Chosen One scenario). Maybe a weapon that ends an important entity becomes blessed or cursed.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the "generic" fantasy consideration that certain species are psychologically disposed to certain behaviors. Dogs are outgoing, cats are reserved, mice are skittish. Goblins are like....wolverines. Or tasmanian devils. Their ecological niche has been to expand at any cost, and to exploit the resources of other sentients wherever possible, and their entire society as been built around it and dedicated to it. I can certainly see the possibility of finding an orphan or what have you, but Goblin-kind is the universal enemy of all free people. Their civic duty is to Always Be Attacking. Their culture demands that they attack anyone who isn't actively giving them things, or possibly another goblin. Even if you found a goblin you educated and taught to understand the basics of ethics and moral responsibility, everyone else in your entire city/realm/civilization has only ever seen one, or maybe two kinds of goblins before.

If they're very lucky, and very humble, they've only seen the ones who come to steal their children.

Predisposed shouldn't mean predetermined. Variety is always nice. If all individuals of a kin are similar, there won't be many interesting characters. Not saying goblins shouldn't be evil or mischievous, but would be nice to see them in more roles: reckless marauder, cowardly turncoat, shady merchant, petty thief, shortchanger, street mime,  etc.

About no one ever leaving the game... would anyone ever join it either, if they could be reincarnations or something of somebody else? (Also, from a memory standpoint characters don't leave the game as it is -- their history is recorded forever, even if only for Legends Mode.)

Good point. You could be reborn into a faction you fought against in a previous life. You could be your own grandchild. Or marry someone who is the reincarnation of your mother. Everyone would be like part of the same big messed-up family.

And you knew what i meant be "leaving the game": eternal slumber. Just being in your well-earned tomb. Doing things is an hassle, anyway.

Maybe listen a little bit, but not get too close probably till I know what they are talking about.

That is reasonable but I wanted a zany answer.

That makes sense. And the Selesnya elves of Ravnica seem to be more about brainwashing than nature preservation, while the Golgari ones are more self-serving.

I have a Selesnya deck! Peaceful. Preachy. Picture: an elvish embassy arriving at your drawbridge to ask you if you heard the "good word" and offer you the mercy of the forrest spirit. What do you do? Do tell.

I think you're all confusing darkspawn with the Innsmouth look.
And now i feel compelled to post the wiki explanation for the uninformed, and The Shadow over Innsmouth for the die-hard Crafties.

Correct if I'm wrong, but the Innsmouth look is genetic. The freaks weren't mutated, they were mutants all along.

I like goblin societies as they are now. Goblin is a way of life.

Mutations would seem more appropriate in civilizations conquered by demons. "I can feel the warp overtaking me. It is a good pain."

Our elves are Llanowar elves lite. "One bone broken for every twig snapped underfoot".

I was waitingfor somone to make that reference due to also playing mtg.

My favorite portrayal of elves was in the Lorwyn exansion. "See, the elves of Lorwyn have a different relationship to nature than other planes' elves. They regard nature as something to be improved, cultivated, and if necessary, rearranged. One elvish perfect named Eidren had all of the trees of his native Gilt-Leaf Wood uprooted and rearranged to create a pattern he found more beautiful." They call ugly creatures "eyeblights" and hunt them mercilessly.

Elfs can be so well portrayed as things other than wildlife conservationists.

The eventual goal is to have procedurally generated metaphysics, so one game might have a Dream World, an Afterworld and an Underworld, whereas another game might have a plane for each deity, and another game might have parallel "real worlds" coexisting.

There is no particular reason that the afterlife rules need to be the same for everyone either.  Those that worship forces of nature might reincarnate while those that worship willful powers go one to some afterlife.  The requirements for entering the afterlife (i.e., not sticking around as ghosts) might vary as well.

One implication of an afterlife is that, as far as the game is concerned, no one ever leaves the game.  Those nineteen bandits you just killed?  Chilling out in the Pit of the Damned.  Those elven merchants?  Singing to each other in the Big Forest Retreat in the Sky.  Those eight squads of Goblins?  Gearing up in the Underworld to emerge from a spire and come after you again.

I would be on board with most of that, except the "no one ever leaves the game". The possibility of being lost forever makes danger feel more real and since space is finite, over a long enough history, the world would be overrun with ghosts. But I'm sidetracking.

Well, how would you make the planes work with the now-active history without burning people's computers?
(I mean, I guess there wouldn't be as much going on in those alternate realities as in the main world, but it still adds a fair few of them into the rotation, so...)

Alternate realities makes it sound so grand. "Pocket dimension" would be more like it, I think?

Maybe a limit amount of planes or a limit to the size of the plains could be set during world generation?

On another note, the game will probably take a very long while to be finished (if ever) so computing capacity won't always be an issue; Mr. Moore said so.

Anything that distracts the Green Menace from Tree Jihading all over everything is a good idea in my book. It just doesn't feel... Elfy, in the DF sense.
You need to realize we're dealing with an extreme case of Our Elves Are Different. The elves we have now in Dwarf Fortress aren't your typical tolkenien supermodels, or Blizzard's glowy-eyed fanfiction fodder. These are Keebler Elves from hell that make cookies from your giblets if you so much as look at a tree funny. They don't care about the woodland critters, they just care about the woodlands. Killing and devouring every sapient creature on the planet is perfectly justifiable for them if it's in the defense of their precious trees. They've done it many times before and they're going to continue to do so at every opportunity.

Our elves are Llanowar elves lite. "One bone broken for every twig snapped underfoot".

Hope this doesn't make me a necroposter. I was away from the game and forums for a long time  :( and I just couldn't find a more recent topic that touched the subject.

Could planes be created by powerful entities? Say, a god of blacksmiths would create a realm of metal and fire. A unique demon would create a tailor-made hell. A god of death or a great necromancer would create a realm of the dead. And so on.

Good entity-owned planes could be accessed by followers of the entity, as a reward. Evil entity-owned planes would be more like dungeons where the condemned would be thrown.

Being given necromancy by a god is considered a gift in DF :) at least from the perspective of the donor/recievor, but not those around them.

That's my point, really. Gods seem to only want to bless grim loners with the power to creep people out. Why not pick charismatic people who would use their awe inspiring powers to gather (live) followers for the gods who bestow these very powers. Maybe they'd grow more powerful as their cults grow.

They can already make books. Maybe they could make holy scriptures too. Dwarfs would spread these around along with their faith. Maybe dwarfs of a different faith would try to burn these books... This a whole other idea but I think it goes well with this religion thing.

Why do gods only ever make abominations? Shouldn't some gods reward true believers with abilities like healing the sick or put evil spirits and undead to rest?

These prophets would use their social skills and super-powers to convert the needy to their gods.

Sometimes different prophets would be servants to opposing deities and incite holy wars, sometimes they would try to impose church-states complete with inquisition-like organizations and some would just be wandering preachers going wherever they are needed to spread the good word. There's a lot of possibilities.

I find that this unborn child idea can be expanded on. Add some random powers, weakenesses and behaviors to it. Evil gods could inflict these abnormal pregnancies to bring about the Anti-Christ! Picture the creepy kid from omen as a dwarf.
