DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problem with early sieges
« on: September 04, 2014, 04:00:42 am »
Thanks for all the replies!

With your help I could survive two goblin sieges. :) My military is training up and soon I'll give the goblins hell.  :P

I've got two other questions:

1) Is tin and iron really that seldom? My embark has shallow metals and multiple deep metals, but I just find copper and silver in my last two embarks. :(

2) How do I manage plump helmet farms? My problem is that I dont want the dwarves to just eat raw plump helmets, but when I cook them, the seeds are lost. I want to have self-sustaining farms without buying seeds from caravans all the times...

Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Problem with early sieges
« on: September 03, 2014, 12:16:08 pm »
Hey guys,

I tried to embark on a place near goblins.
After about one year I had the first siege of 5 or six goblins. At this time I had 6 dwarfs in a squad who trained for a few months. Everyone of them just had a copper short sword or battle axe and a copper mail shirt, because I didnt have the ore and workforce for more. As you can image, my military got slaughtered.

I then pulled my bridge up, so they couldnt come into my fortress, but all my pastured animals got slaughtered.

So my questions:

1) What do you do against early sieges if you dont have good ores and your dwarves arent trained well? I thought of cage traps before my entrance, but how do I get the invaders to walk onto them when my bridge is raised?

2) How can I secure my pastures without using too much workforce and materials?

3) Is copper a better material for armor than leather?

4) How well armed and trained do my dwarves have to be when facing a siege?

5) When I trap a goblin, how can I take away all his items without opening the cage?

Thank you very much!

Hey,

I just unpacked the new SP 40.10 r2, used the copy script, enabled soundsense and Dwarf Therapist.
Now every time I try to launch DF, the windows freezes and I have to shut it down. Never had this problem with SP before. :(

Any help?

Edit:
Nevermind. Just had to deactivate DFHack, run DF, then close DF and activate DFHack again. :)

Thanks for the fast uplaoad!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / FPS problem
« on: August 28, 2014, 08:24:02 am »
Hey guys,

I just started a new fortress.. Im in year two or three now with about 80 dwarfes, about 10 children and about 20 animals in my pasture. I didnt do huge projects or mined out much, but my FPS are already down to about 60.
My PC is pretty new (CPU is Intel Core i5 4570 @ 3,2 GHz). When I watched quill18s new series of DF he always had ~99 fps...

So i wanted to ask if this FPS drop is normal or if somethings is wrong with my DF or my PC? I'm using Starter Pack 40.10.

Thanks in advance!

Edit:
I uploaded my savegame here, if that helps...

The easy way to protect your pasture is to build a roof over it (that is, a floor on the level above); the tiles underneath will still be considered "light" and will continue to grow grass, but nothing will be able to get inside.

You can also make the surrounding walls unclimbable by topping them with fortifications, either carved or constructed. Note that this won't keep fliers from getting in, and you'll want to keep the surrounding area free of trees or anything else tall enough for enemies to jump into your perimeter.

Thanks for the quick answer!

I guess I'll now strike the earth another time. ;)

Skyline

You can be sieged if there's a "Tower" listed in the site's neighbours.

Ahh, I didnt press Tab... Neighbors were Dwarves, Humans, Goblins (war) and "Tower"... I think that's how you learn to play DF. :(

Yes I'm playing 40.09... So what can I do in order to have a protected pen/pasture?

Edit:
I'd also like to know why the undead could siege me. On the world map this embark location has "Surroundings: calm". :(

DF Gameplay Questions / Lost my first fortress :(
« on: August 25, 2014, 09:33:30 am »
Hey guys,

I just lost my first fortress... The only dwarf who survived is a stonecrafter who went insane, so i had to block him in a room...

I really dont understand why this happened. The undead sieged me and came into my fortress on the marked placed:

I removed all ramps in that area so nobody can come into the fortress... What did I do wrong? :(

Hey guys,

I'd really like to know if its possible to conquer the whole world in Fortress mode or if you can't leave the borders of your embark.

Hey guys,

thank you very much for your fast work!

I have a question regarding the soundsense file. There are so many updates in the last weeks and if you delete the whole DF-file, the downloaded sounds from Soundsense have to be reloaded every update.
Is it possible to copy/paste the soundsense file every time or does it get updates that often, too?

Thanks in advance,

Skyline

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: First Impressions .40.01 AND BEYOND!
« on: July 28, 2014, 02:17:27 am »
It's a lot less buggy than before, and a lot of bugs were fixed recently. Still, you might want to be cautious.

Try editing civ creatures, megabeasts etc. and dogs to get at least one skill level in discipline.  (that is, adding [NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:1] to their creature raws)  That helps a lot with creatures being horrified at random until the morale-system is fixed.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'll try 0.40 with your editing then. :)

Hey guys,

at the moment I just want to play Fortress Mode. Would you recommend me to play with 0.40 or is it too buggy at the moment?

DF General Discussion / Re: Time for bets. New release date?
« on: May 19, 2014, 05:06:41 am »
Hey guys,

I've got a question regarding the time after the release...
How long will it probably take to get the new graphics mods/tilesets like Obsidian/Phoebus?

Thanks!

A day or two, or up to a week, depending on when in the week the release came out and the amount of time the author has. Basically within a week.

Not sure how long it will take to update DT to the new version.

Thanks for your reply. :)
Im curious if it makes sense to play DF now for me... I learned the basics some time ago and now I'm waiting for the new update..
Will the new changes make the game very different or does it make sense to play the current DF version?
