DF Gameplay Questions / Problem with early sieges

Hey guys,
I tried to embark on a place near goblins.
After about one year I had the first siege of 5 or six goblins. At this time I had 6 dwarfs in a squad who trained for a few months. Everyone of them just had a copper short sword or battle axe and a copper mail shirt, because I didnt have the ore and workforce for more. As you can image, my military got slaughtered.
I then pulled my bridge up, so they couldnt come into my fortress, but all my pastured animals got slaughtered.
So my questions:
1) What do you do against early sieges if you dont have good ores and your dwarves arent trained well? I thought of cage traps before my entrance, but how do I get the invaders to walk onto them when my bridge is raised?
2) How can I secure my pastures without using too much workforce and materials?
3) Is copper a better material for armor than leather?
4) How well armed and trained do my dwarves have to be when facing a siege?
5) When I trap a goblin, how can I take away all his items without opening the cage?
Thank you very much!
