DF Gameplay Questions / Re: So this diplomat is living in my fortress.
« on: November 20, 2007, 06:47:00 am »
Once I had a human diplomat who stayed for about 2-3 seasons in my fort. He did not get insane or unhappy - at some point he was gone, without any further notice.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Always running out of wood
« on: December 11, 2007, 06:16:00 am »
it's true - if you have a steel industry running you will easily run out of wood. and trade is no solution to that problem as traders only take a few logs with them. i'm playing on a forest map and even on this map the forest close to my fortress is nearly depleted (however i have enough wood on my map, it only takes more time to transport it)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pig iron item mandate

it's no bug. my countess permanently anounces pig iron mandates. and there is one kind of pig iron item you can produce: steel. that's all you need.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: dangerous economy
« on: December 07, 2007, 04:28:00 am »
thanks for your useful suggestions! in fact i have lots of craftsdwarf's workshops, but had my legendary craftsdwarves working there. so i will assign them as haulers and make my peasants craftsdwarves.
littering the fortress: as the economy does not really work i decided not to mint coins - it does not seem to make any difference. so i can dig out 2x1 slum bedrooms.
i made my vacant bedrooms barracks - doesn't seem to make a diffence though, they still complain about not having a proper room.

however, i don't have many peasants (only 3 at the moment), most of my haulers work part-time as planters/cooks/brewers, but still don't earn enough money for proper rooms - but hopefully enough for my new slum rooms...

DF Gameplay Questions / dangerous economy
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:55:00 am »
the dwarven economy is getting really dangerous at later stages of the game. most of my dwarves simply don't have any money, so they cann't afford a room. not having a bedroom is no problem for dwarves as long as they dine in legendary dining rooms and get alcohol and well prepared meals. but at some point their cloths start to rot away, and this fact makes them really angry. i have plenty of clothes, i have clothing shops (but even the dwarves with money rarely go shopping), but they are unable to get new clothes. the result is that dwarves are throwing tantrums, and i have no idea to avoid this. anybody an idea what to do?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Safest military training?
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:43:00 am »
i think the main problem is, that newly drafted dwarves spar with your well trained champions. and i don't know a way to avoid this.
even if you equip your dwarves with silver hammers, minor injuries to the spine will likely occur. and even a minor injury will stop their progress. i have about 25 soldiers, and 4 of them have spine injuries - all of these injuries are either grey or brown - but still they are useless now.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dumping jobs uncompleted.

and an other suggestion. maybe your dumping zone is too small (i never made such a small dumping zone, so i cann't say for sure). you should extend your dumping zone and build a channel beneath it (works like a cliff, your stones miraculousy disappear)

did you turn "dwarves chasm others" on (o-r-k)? i think as long as you don't turn this on they refuse to dump stone.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: train soldiers...
« on: December 04, 2007, 06:38:00 am »
they are broken up into small squads. but i watched my soldiers more closely; it seems that they regularily get wounded - no serious injuries, only grey wounds.
so even if your soldiers are good armor and shield users, they get wounded - however i was able to prevent deathly and most serious wounds. of my 20 soldiers only 2 got seriously wounded - one has two mangled lungs (i'm not sure these wounds will ever heal... it's a miracle he is still alive) and another one has minor brain injuries (they will never heal).

but i have a new question - do soldiers only spar with others in their squad or do they spar with other squad soldiers too? if they spar with other squads it would explain the many wounds they suffer.

no - i only have one injured dwarf. before they start sparring with real weapons i give them my exceptional steel armors and let them wrestle for a (long, long) while. when they achieve elite wrestler status or wrestler status with high values for shield and armor i give them silver weapons to spar with - this way you can avoid most injuries.

maybe my barack was too small - i've build an other one, and more of my dwarves spar.

DF Gameplay Questions / train soldiers...
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:52:00 pm »
i have about 20 dwarves activated as soldiers and try to train them. in the beginning training was no problem (when i had only 5 or 6 soldiers) - i even got 3 champions after a while; my soldiers were permanently sparring in the baracks.

but now, hardly anyone trains. of course all my squads are standing down, i have a barack and an armory. but when i look at the status screen, my soldiers are occupied with soldiering, nobody is sparring in the baracks anymore (except my champions sometimes, who don't need any more training).

i have no idea, what's the problem - could building a new barack solve the problem?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Catch live fish

it's just a guess, never tried to catch live fish myself. maybe you have to build glass terrariums to catch fish.

if you restrict an area it only means that dwarves will try to avoid it. if they want to pick something up, and the shortest way would be to pass along the river, they will try to find another way. but if they want to drink from the river they will still go there (as there is no other path).
but what you can do is to assign your well as drinking zone. then go to orders (o), activity zone orders (z), and enter "only activity zone drinking". this way the dwarves will never go to the river, when they are thirsty.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Safe fishing using grates?
« on: December 01, 2007, 03:43:00 am »
did you try to kill or capture them? i had a similar problem around my river - it was infested with hippos and elephants. my trapper managed to catch about 20-30 hippos before he got killed (you need an experienced one, an unexperienced will only catch small animals). several of my fisherdwarves got killed over time, but on the good side i have about 20-30 tamed hippos and elephants.
you can also try to kill them - i think hippos aren't so tough. with a sword/axedwarf and two marksmen you will have no problem to kill a hippo (but don't get engaged with more than one, that could get dangerous).
once even a baby killed a hippo calf... - well the baby's father, a wrestler knocked the calf unconscious, then the baby got engaged in combat with it, and killed it. the baby's father stood aside and watched his child killing the hippo.
maybe you should forget fishing and start trapping the hippos - in the beginning you will catch nothing, but when the trapper gets experienced you have a splendid ressource of fresh meat. (as long as he does not get killed...)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: elephants - what can i do with them
« on: November 30, 2007, 02:39:00 am »
of course, giving them too much meat would be gamebreaking (but 10x more than dogs would be okay i think).
but it is the same with horses, camels, cows etc - it is more efficient to concetrate on dogs or even cats, than on these animals. as far is i know in real life there are and were never hippo and elephant ranches - as these animals are simply not the best meat sources. but giving dogs 5 meat and horses only 9 is unbalanced as the later take much more time to grow up.
