DF Gameplay Questions / Re: no flux stone
« on: November 23, 2007, 11:07:00 am »
it's a hard decision between magma and flux. i thought i could get along without magma, but setting up a metal industry is quite a pain without it. but playing without flux is also problematic - traders usually only bring a few items with them, propably not enough to produce steel large scale.
i started a new fort, with magma, running water, sand, but without flux again. however i will have to abandon it again. i had to dig 27 (!) levels down to get to the magma and the only forest - oh yes they are on the same level. and the result is that firemen are killing my dwarves. but as the forest is around the magma i had to make a connection to this level.

DF Gameplay Questions / no flux stone
« on: November 23, 2007, 05:45:00 am »
i've built a neatly 3.5 million fortress, with great trap defense mechanisms and a small but well trained army. however, i did not find any flux stone. the map is full of magnetite, platinum and gold, but without flux i'm not able to produce any steel.
i read in the wiki, that flux mainly appears in sedimentary layers. i have stone layers full of mudstone (but no flux so far), layers full of gabbro (no flux), and there are layers full of granite (which i didn't explore by now).
i'm considering abandoning my fortress if i don't find any flux, as i do not have magma either (and about half of my 120 dwarves are occupied hauling logs to keep my smelters and forges running).
So, could anybody tell me where to dig for flux. or is it impossible to find flux on this map?

no she had no miscarriage. and a guard killed her by now - however her baby survived, the poor orphan.

DF Gameplay Questions / countess went berserk
« on: November 22, 2007, 10:01:00 am »
my countess just went insane in her fancy bedroom. i have no idea, how this happened - i was able to meet all her requests, there is plenty of beer and my dwarves mood generally ranges between happy and ecstatic. she doesn't attack anyone, just stands in her room, doing nothing. (maybe it has to do with her baby). should i send my military to kill her, or is there any chance she recovers?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: "I need rocks!"

does he only cry for rocks or other things too? if they only lack one good they cry for all goods they need. if a mason needs rock, crystal, glass, metal bars and leather and you have all goods except glass, he will still cry for all these goods (not only glass), although you have them in stock.

is it a real problem not to have gold and copper coins - or will everything just go on without any further problems. i mean not having gold and copper does not seem much of a problem to me. or is it impossible for my dwarfs to buy anything because they don't get any change (so they can't buy items with a price of 233 or so, but can buy items with a price of 150)

DF Gameplay Questions / economy - problems with coins
« on: November 21, 2007, 04:43:00 am »
finally the count came to my fort, and started the economy (it's the first time i play with economy, and i'm still wondering what's actually the advantage of it. my dwarfs don't go to the shops - most of them don't have a single penny. i see only one advantage yet: it's easier to butcher animals, i got rid of many annoying cats this way ...)
but my question is about the coins. i smelted 15000 platinum coins (did not know they are not necessary when i made them) 10000 copper coins, 5000 gold coins. but when i look at the coin screen in the status menu - only 30000 silver coins appear (the sum of all my different coins). and a message: the broker recommends keeping 5100 coins of each type. is this a bug, or can i "assign" certain coins as silver, copper and gold...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bone Carver
« on: November 21, 2007, 04:26:00 am »
are you sure bone carving is active for the bone carver. (view bone carver ->p->l->activate bone carving) - and deactivate everything else to make sure he works as a bone carver. some of the dwarfs take really long breaks. look at the unit list (u at the main menu) to see what he is doing. usually the bone carver should immediately start to work. if he can't get to the shop or anything else you get a message, what's going wrong.

well it's true traps can get boring - my fortress is very well protected - no one could enter it alive. but it's strange: nobody tries it. the regular kobold thieves simply don't appear anymore. it is fun to build complicated trap mechanisms - but if nobody steps into them they are quite useless.

i guess i will have to build up a military force too, although the sieges don't really bother me as i have everything i need in my fortress (i even have a forrest there, surrounded by a wall, about 100-200 logs). But how much time will it take to build an army capable of defeating a force of 50 well armed goblins? and is it really a good idea to attack the goblins if you can work on as if nothing has happend (i don't lose workers, i send them indoors then lock the doors and allow them to go outdoors again, the production goes on with no problems). Well maybe the head of their human macelord is an incentive to attack

i am not sure, but i think you can only station them in baracks. if you want them to go somewhere, you have to add a patrol point. if i want to get them to a certain place, first i remove all patrol points and make two or three new there.
but you will never be able to move all soldiers to a place. my experience is  if you get more than 50% of them to some place you are lucky.
in my opinion the military is the weak point of the game. it's so complicated to make them grab the kind of armor and weapons you want them to wear. they always hang around somewhere, without reason. and one of my marksdwarfs simply stays at one point and does nothing. if you want to defend your castle build traps, traps, traps - that's more interesting (in my opinion) and you don't lose men.

DF Gameplay Questions / military
« on: November 20, 2007, 07:16:00 am »
i'm sorry i have to pose another question, this time about the military. having soldiers train with their steel weapons seems to be very dangerous, especially when trained soldiers fight with untrained (i lost two low-profile recruits that way). so i should let them wrestle to increase their armor skills, and then let them train with wooden weapons.
Well, the part with wrestling is no problem (although you can wound or kill even that way soldiers, i found out). the part with the wooden weapons is more difficult - first the elves don't really like me, they don't offer me any trade contracts, so i can't order wooden weapons. my question is: what's the second best choice to these weapons - to forge copper weapons or use an other ore? and what can i do to make the dwarfs take the copper and not the steel weapons (do i have to forbid all other weapons?)
my second question is about armor, i have plenty of armor in my stocks, but the dwarfs don't take the armor, although i ordered them to do so. is there no way to give them direct orders to get and equip a certain item?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Winter Deaths
« on: November 21, 2007, 06:09:00 am »
you don't have to designate a pond (it will take time to fill it, and it is no permanent water source). i will tell you what i did. one z-achsis level below the surface of the river i dig a room (5x5,  just below my meeting room, where i want to have the well) then i mine to the river and flood the room. don't be afraid your miner will escape as water flows very slowly. in my meeting room i build one tile of channel just below the water room. on the channel i set up my well. voila - that's all you have to do.
i did not even use a floodgate, because the well is on the same level as the surface of the river, so there is no danger of being flooded. although the river freezes in the winter my room is always filled with fresh water. the advantage of this method is, that it is simple and you get a permanent water source. in fact i don't even need the well, because i have lots of beer - but wounded dwarfs are given water, not beer. during winter my wounded dwarfs would die of thirst.
