Unobtanium costs 20 million per kilogram, what do they make with that stuff? Inkjet printer ink?

The big problem I had with Avatar was a sever migraine reaction after removing the 3d glasses at the end of the movie. It was a decent movie, very pretty, pretty unoriginal, lots of bad tactics, badly designed technology, to many scenes like that ad with the indian that had a single tear rolling down his face.

a budget of $250 sans monitor will be very difficult to get a decent computer for dwarf fortress. In fact, you will have a hard time putting any computer together for that price unless you are getting your parts second hand or you already have most of the components you need. A legal copy of windows 7 is going to run at least a hundred dollars, leaving only $150 for hardware.

You have a minor upgrade budget, not a new computer budget. Find the fastest CPU your motherboard will support, buy that. If you already have it, look at buying more memory if you have less than 2 gigs. If your existing graphics card is very weak, some benefit could be had from a new $50 video card.

Creative Projects / Re: Pathfinding:
« on: December 23, 2009, 10:49:03 am »
Before you jump on the A* bandwagon. You need to decide if you really want the shortest path, or if you want your monsters to react "realistically".

A* will always find the shortest path if your heuristic estimation is less than the actual shortest path.

A monster that acts realistically may have a limited knowledge of terrain, and will most likely have a limited knowledge of the location of the player.

A monster with only sight wont know where to go until it sees the player.

A monster with only hearing might not know where the player is until he gets within a certain radius.

A monster with only a sense of smell may not know where the player is until he crosses the players path and then follows it.

That really depends on the value of drake's equation. We could be only a few stars away from alien life! Intelligent life on the other hand... there's a good chance we'll never find anyone else out there.

Out there? You are an optimist. There is a good chance we will never find intelligent life on earth.

Ah, looking at the code a bit more, I see the issue. He is not using dynamic class loading. but loading a resource file that is inside the jar.

These links should provide an answer to your problem.

http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=278932

Dynamic class loading is a really sweet (though advanced, don't worry about it right now) feature. Its a really easy way to implement a quick and easy plugin system without linking and compile issues. Did you know that the first generation of First Person Shooters to allow mods needed to recompile themselves each time a mod was added or removed?

"Since the program doesn't know what files are in there and it wants to dynamically load them, this is troublesome."

I am not sure I entirely understand your question.

A .jar is just technically a zip file, you can find a list of the files it contains by opening it with any archive viewer.

What is "the program" that can not find the files? your IDE? java? javadoc?

I just remembered something, a question I don't really remember being asked outright.
It's a cautiously serious question.

Toady, what would it take to persuade you to even consider an attempt at porting DF, or any part of it, to Windows Mobile? Because I'm growing more and more tired of the selection of games available for it. Peggle can be fun for only so many hours/days/years, and Sudoku is hardly as much entertainment as I would like.

windows mobile does not have binary compatability across all its supported platforms. You would need to target a version specifically for whatever hardware you are using. Add to that, windows mobile is total crap.

IIRC there is a DF remoting application that can theoretically run on a smart phone. Essentially streaming the interface over telnet from a remote desktop. I can not recall what its called though.

It *might* be possible to recompile the linux version for the ARM architecture, but again it will run like ass as the best of its kind currently available runs at about 500 Mhz to 1 Ghz (not even really sure the 1Ghz is actually out yet).

I'd say "Firehuman" is a better name than fireman.

Then we could also have "firedwarves" and "fireelves" and "firegoblins" :P

we already have all of those if your map has access to magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: When is this game going to get difficult?
« on: December 22, 2009, 11:57:00 am »
yes. war with the elves is brutally fun. I had one site where I started at war with the elves. First few forts were butchered in the first spring as a dozen elves with bow and spear decloaked on my unwary dwarves and butchered them without mercy.

A dwarf can outrun water/magma if he has enough agility. You either want you most advanced miner, so he can escape. Or your weakest miner, so it doesn't matter if he dies.

I just took the opportunity to check out your code Savok. Definitely ahead of the curve for someone with your experience. If you keep writing java (and you should, even if you pick another language to learn and use as well), you should get used to adding javadoc comments to every class and method. This has two advantages, it can help you keep your own code strait for yourself, and it can be used to automatically generate a javadoc website explaining your interface when you get to the point where you are going to want to work with others on a large project.

Life Advice / Re: Pest control: ants.
« on: December 21, 2009, 04:07:12 pm »
I live in the southern US, we deal with fire-ant colonies all the time here. Best way to kill a colony is not poison. It is dry rice. You see, the ants will haul it into their colony and feed it to their queen. The rice swells on contact with moist ant insides and bursts the queen, killing it and ending the colony. Its a good idea to clean the rice up before it rains though, as moist rice is good ant food instead of bad ant food.

I tried putting the save folder in a new copy of dwarf fortress and the error still occurs. I guess the problem is with the save file not the dwarf fortress folder. Is there a way I can salvage the world and abandon the fortress? I would like to try that if there is a way, before I give up and create a new world.

You might be able to regenerate the world from its parameters. I'm in the wrong OS right now, can't remember exactly how to export those parameters. I think its accessible through legends.

Why would you ever link to TV Tropes? There goes an hour of my life that I'll never recover.

An hour? you got away lucky, you can loose a whole day there is you are not careful.
