I personally avoid replacing CPU opting to instead build a new PC and possibly carry some parts over, it's rare to be able to get a significant upgrade that is compatible with your Motherboard.
Given it worked for a few weeks everything must of been working, problems caused when installing the Processor seem unlikely.

Can you get to the BIOS? Check your Motherboards manual, (or find it online), to see how.

DF General Discussion / Re: Playing DF with a low end computer
« on: August 29, 2014, 09:34:52 am »
Yea these days processors seem to show off with their core count instead of clock speed, so even a 5 year old pc can have solid clock speeds these days... This is because DF doesnt utilize multiple CPU cores

So really, you're in good shape - don't worry - just enjoy the game : ) choose a 2x2 embark and youre solid
Intel is the way to go with DF as they go for higher clock speed and cache size per core.
DF doesn't need a beefy PC, it needs a good processor and plenty of RAM. Though the RAM problem is less now, an 8gb kit is cheap and plenty for games.

Never.
I can't blame the game for my incompetence and bugs while annoying aren't that horrible.

DF General Discussion / Re: Why don't dwarves have butts?
« on: August 28, 2014, 06:54:01 am »
I don't know, on one hand reading about dwarfs hacking a goblin dick off and it sailing off in an arc amuses me, but it adds very little.

Also as we don't need toilets (which i kinda wish we did so that sewers could be built) having non-functional butts makes no sense.

Irrigation systems, being able to just plonk farms down feels too easy so i build irrigation systems for them.
It's not much more work as i always aim to have a cistern of water for the hospital and just in case booze runs out.

Obviously careful management of floodgates is needed to avoid too much FUN.

Also minimal engraving and only done by master engravers, typically only as small parts of walls and pillars.

Either an unintended feature or a feature.
Either way it's pretty awesome as it should reduce the number of bloody children.

DF General Discussion / Re: Skyrim vs Dwarf Fortress
« on: June 25, 2014, 12:19:19 pm »
DF only need Dwarf Therapist to make one aspect of the game convenient and the bugs make the game more entertaining.
Skyrim needs SkyUI and SKSE to be playable(at least for me, i hated the PC menus designed to be used with a gamepad)

Skyrim i have to make a conscience effort to make each character feel different but generally fall back to heavy armour spell-sword. Dwarf Fortress each fort evolved differently based on landscape, resources, neighbors and my own incompetence.

DF General Discussion / Re: How did you find DF?
« on: February 17, 2014, 05:24:03 pm »
Boat Murdered.
Then downloaded it, got very confused by it but persevered and i am so glad i did, DF is just so good.
Been playing for over two years now...

Interesting to see so many people coming from minecraft, i personally didn't (as it didn't exist  :P), i always forget that minecraft is like 2-3 years old now... Sunk so much time into that alpha...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: About Waves of migrants
« on: February 16, 2014, 02:23:29 pm »
you can always 'dispose' ;) of unwanted migrants, make sure they don't get a chance to mingle with your dwarfs though.

Or just recruit them into a rag-tag militia, what i normally do with excess Dorfs' though the same rule of no mingling applies given the death rates involved in poorly armed and armoured milita...

It depends on how i feel.
My favorite 'mean' fort is the split-tier fort, where some dwarfs live in luxury while others go without and are made to work. Those normally end in a 'workers rebellion' where all the workers tantrum spiral resulting in the death of the production side of the fort, the luxury side dies slowly as they run out of food...

Normally i'm kind, but every couple of forts i think of some 'challenge'. (the quickest was an idea where no traps were allowed and ALL dwarfs were part of a milita, cue first siege killing all my most important dwarfs who normally get a free-pass from military service...)

"Do Dwarf Fortress Players Dream of ASCII Sheep?"

Dwarf Fortress has made me a bit of a fantastic racist, in that I've developed a deep distrust of Elves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Gladiator Arena
« on: January 12, 2014, 08:04:07 am »
Yep, done it many times.
It's good training for the newbies. Set up some cage traps, couple of animal traps if your biome has dangerous animals, and then just release them into the arena along with the designed Gladiators.

Mine just consisted of
Entry tunnel for gladiators with a door at each end, open outer end and station them inside then close that and open arena side.
The Arena, just a simple battle area with a viewing gallery above it (a statue garden)
And a Pitting area for the Opponents, order caged opponents to be pitted here, have a few Milita stationed here during pitting as sometimes they escape.

It worked pretty well, sometimes the Dwarfs came out a bit bloodied but all came out with a bit more knowledge of hitting things with the pointy end.

I'm certainly going to recruit all the cripples into the militia now, maybe it will give some encouragement for them to stop causing so many damned cave ins!

DF General Discussion / Re: Does Toady delegate?
« on: September 25, 2013, 02:47:14 pm »
The UI is a last priority,
I'm starting to think that the DF community all have some aspect of Stockholm Syndrome, maybe that of an abused spouse who refuses to leave his or her partner. We don't need to put up with such a terrible interface! Something intuitive, better interaction with the mouse, all that is possible if Toady dropped his pride and asked for help. Hell, he wouldn't even have to pay for it, we'd all do it for free![/quote]

It's not so much Stockhom Syndrome, so much as we have gotta used to it and would prefer to see newer content than just UI revamps.
There are programs that fix major problems, Like Dwarf Therapist and DFHack, but to build them into the game it self would require changes to how those programs work and a lot of coding for no new content.

Toady One is making the game he wants to make, and we all love that game, and not only will trying to force a feature ruin that but also might be for the worse. Since (as you so said) he is not a UI designer.
Also your idea of outsourcing the coding wouldn't work as the game's engine isn't built for it, changing the UI means a lot of small changes that would mean either Toady has to wait for the UI team or vice-versa.

DF General Discussion / Re: Pondering over the existence of floor tiles
« on: September 11, 2013, 10:08:06 am »
I think it's because of the conversion from the old 2D version (just X and Y axis) to the 3D.
So to make things less confusing for old players he had Z levels be in two parts; 'floor' and 'wall' layers.
