General Discussion / The Dwarves - by Markus Heitz
« on: February 24, 2011, 03:10:15 pm »
For countless millennia, the dwarves of the Fifthling Kingdom have defended the stone gateway into Girdlegard. Many and varied foes have hurled themselves against the portal and died attempting to breach it. No man or beast has ever succeeded. Until now...Abandoned as a child, Tungdil the blacksmith labours contentedly in the land of Ionandar, the only dwarf in a kingdom of men. Although he does not want for friends, Tungdil is very much aware that he is alone? Indeed, he has not so much as set eyes on another dwarf. But all that is about to change. Sent out into the world to deliver a message and reacquaint himself with his people, the young foundling finds himself thrust into a battle for which he has not been trained. Not only his own safety, but the life of every man, woman and child in Girdlegard depends upon his ability to embrace his heritage. Although he has many unanswered questions, Tungdil is certain of one thing: no matter where he was raised, he is a true dwarf. And no one has ever questioned the courage of the Dwarves.

Life Advice / Routers, why will you not obey?

It's constantly timing out or disconnecting from the modem, fiddling with the onboard firewall settings doesn't seem to do much. Here's a bit of its log.

(well all of its log,) And I would much appreciate a second opinion.

Creative Projects / DorfQuest - We need no damn arms!
« on: July 27, 2009, 07:51:21 pm »
Lacking anything better to do...

Edit: Since this became more popular than expected, I'm expanding this bit.

Dorfquest. Enter the head of a nameless Dorf (As to avoid conflict with vertically disabled and the Tolkien estate. (Not to mention WotC)), and tug the strings that makes him tick. Polish walls, carve a mug, pull every lever you come across. As long as it's reasonably logical humorous or Dorfen to do.

Contains strong language and possibly violent scenes in the future. Reader discretion is advised.

Addendum: Well buggeration, apparently DorfQuest is also a text adventure from 4chan... I really should check these things before embarking on whimsical forum nonsense.

At first I was worried my poor kittens were getting injured by the local vermin (it has happened) but this just surprised me more...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sure enough, the little killing machine was dragging the vermin's carcass around like a trophee for a while, until his owner finally got rid of it for him.

It's creepy how DF starts to emulate real life like this...

[Edit: Nevermind, just noticed someone already has noticed it. I guess it's a new feature]

DF General Discussion / Dwarven Theology

Some random amphitheater, dwarfenhomes. Senior Philosopher McDwarf has the podium.

Now, ask any young dwarf whom the true higher power is and he'll probably name dozens of deamons and deities or even dragons of varying spheres of influence, but over all of these looms Armok: God of Blood. More on him later. What few know is that while Armok is omnipresent, he did not create the world. There is a far older being, whose avatar we cannot even fathom, but whom I personally believe is Amphibian in nature. - Now before you burn me on the stake for heresy, allow me to reiterate this is merely heresay and vague hypothesis sprung from numerous forays into ancient ruins and archeological sites...

But that is a topic for another page, now we speculate over the nature of Armok. We know for certain he's the god of Blood, a very admirable domain for certain, but many misunderstands it as ravenous bloodlust. Which has all sorts of negative connections, such as war, genocide, archaic blood sacrifice rituals, the elves in particular have been accused of Armok worship only for their tendency to not let good meat go to waste. Blood is vital for us to live, it flows within us constantly, it rushes in our limbs as we go to war as any warrior know. It boils in our veins when our moods strike. And erm, it certainly makes Missus McDwarf.. um, when it, flows in.. that direction.. *cough*. And we do not take terms such as blood relatives, brothers by blood, or blood oaths lightly. Indeed, these are held sacred in our society. And do we not fear the undead? Whose blood has run cold and still, yet still seek to devour and destroy the living. I have a zombie muskox in my lab and it certainly creeps me out. For they certainly are abominations towards natural order and we seek to destroy them whenever possible, going as far as to set up outposts in the middle of frozen glaciers, where the only thing keeping us alive is our force of will (and many many layers of clothes). Be it by accident, or Armok's divine will?

Now, I am not saying that all is peach blossoms and daffodils with Armok worship, blood will be spilled, sure enough. Copious amounts of it even, be it of thy enemy or your own or even mine! He cares not which. But I would just like to put forth the notion that Armok is not only a god for those drunken frat boys down by the barracks sparring all day while guzzling beer and wearing funny helmets. Or just those shady priests in red robes in the back of this hall. But for all dwarves, young and old.

Some call us slaves to the blood god, well we could just as well be slaves to breathing, or eating, or whatever mood strikes our fancy. He is the life blood of dwarfkind and binds all of dwarf together. Let is embrace our servitude and face tomorrow with pride. And our axe in hand.

Thank you for coming to my theological seminar, my assistants will hand you the engraved granite brochures on temple construction on the way out. If you have any questions, you may find me in my 3x4 tile cell in the prison levels, bring some food.

Feel free to add your own thoughts on the topic of "higher powers".
Edit: Red'i'tized all of the Armoks, sloth does not excuse inconsistency.

DF Modding / Heaters/Freezers - More jobs for the Mechanics
« on: December 22, 2007, 10:09:00 pm »
Is it possible to mod in a special furniture/mechanism that generates extremes of heat and/or cold when activated and possibly powered by a external power source. (Possibly through a gnomishly-complicated system of expanding and contracting copper bands)

Possibly making it even more complicated by giving it four settings, "line, cone, aura and off."

I like building large "lab fortresses" with rather morbid experiments involving mind boggling feats of engineering or morbidly pointless torture of goblins. (Our last experiment found that under drowning induced stress, a goblin can swim down three levels, open a forgotten maintenance hatch and flee to the surface. We caught the pair shortly afterwards. Not sure if we should try again with a locked hatch or just toss them into the "Recycler".)

And I feel that having a way to play with heat and cold respectively would add that extra sinister touch to my.. "experiments". - Also, being able to freeze up  and clear out that awkard flooding accident in test chamber six would be neat.

Plus I don't really want to mess with utility programs too much, x_x

How can I make it so a waterwheel can be fashioned from steel bars? I need to do something extremely inadvisable with a magma current.

DF Bug Reports / [33g] Removing floors drops the materials used.
« on: January 02, 2008, 05:57:00 am »
Instead of dropping both dwarf and the materials used into the abyss we now just loose the materials used in the floor. Which would be no problem, if nobody was standing directly under it, but more of a hazzle if it was over a source of water, say, a river. :/

When bridges are dismantled the stone used is dragged ashore, why not floor tiles?

DF Bug Reports / Graphical Glitch?
« on: April 25, 2008, 04:18:00 am »
Anyone have a idea what causes this..? It's always worked fine before.

Apparently someone else also using this terminal set imageshack to optimize any image into a six by six pixel .gif.

Much confusing, considering the original image was a .png.

No matter, I'll simply rig his bedroom to be flooded.

Added another image to show what it looks like on a freshly downloaded version.

Final Addendum: Nipped in to award Gobbo Overhyped Cavalry pointless poster kegcap and giant foam hand.
