DF Modding / world.sav file
« on: December 15, 2007, 11:27:00 pm »
I'm guessing that the "world" is saved in the world.sav file and am wondering what kinda format the actual world is in.

I finially got around to making a simple inflate program that inflated all the chunks of zlib data, but have yet to figure out where the "tiles" start and in what order.

Anyone else looking into this that can share some info with me?  I've been digging around in the wiki for info but mostly find info on the dwarves (which most people are conserned with).

Only thing I can add to this so far is the fact that the world.sav data is cut into 20KB chunks and then compressed, except the last 2 which are half of the last chunk less than 40KB but more than 20KB.

DF Modding / world file format
« on: November 18, 2007, 06:57:00 pm »
Hi, I'm finding it pretty hard to find stuff about the file formats and things like that for this game.

Is there a description of the world file format?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Blinking names
« on: December 03, 2007, 12:39:00 am »
Hi, probably a silly question, but again my searching ability has turned up nothing...

I've got a few dwarves that have blinking names (bright to dark), even my sheriff is blinking now.

I didn't think anything of this before since I viewed everything I could about them... happy about everything and clothed and perfect health (all white limbs).  But, now that I upgraded to 33d my legendary miner has critical feet and seems to have "blown up."  I was just going about my business checking on farms and other shops when I noticed smoke from the food stockpile.  And there was my miner, next to no feet and smoking up a large area of the fort... then dead--and no more smoke.

Also, no messages about anything in the log.

I'm guessing the upgraing killed the dwarf, but now I really want to know what the blinking names mean (when he was critical (no feet) his name blinked red/yellow).

Thanks in advance.

I had a hard time searching for a topic on this so excuse me if it's been talked about a lot  :)

I've got some nifty-cool marksdwarves that I trained up pretty early in the game.  I then wanted them to get shield and wrestling skills just in case they ran out of bolts.  So I told em to take off the x-bows and put on shields... but instead of shields they picked up other random armor (I've got a few wearing plate mail and holding plate mail) and won't pick up a shield or x-bow after telling them to not use shields but x-bows again.

Hope that is clear.
ie: Marksdwarves wearing and holding plate mail instead of x-bows.

I've got plently of x-bows and quivers and about 2k bone bolts.  These are the same dwarves who fended off 4 seiges by themselves with bolts but now won't pick em back up.

I checked with dwarf companion and none of them are nerv damaged or anything weird... but they have skilled up to champions now.  I was going to try to unenlist them then reenlist them but I can't unenlist champions.

Any help would be great  :) (no I don't really want to kill them, they are good friends with all the rest of the 190 dwarves in the fort.)

DF Gameplay Questions / metal logs
« on: April 10, 2008, 07:46:00 pm »
Ok, here might be a weird idea since I searched all the forums+wiki and didn't see anything with the words "metal" and "log" together.

I wanted to try making an adamantine catapult... and when the damn dwarf finally got over to the workshop I got a message: "...cancels Construct Adamantine Catapult Parts: Needs metal logs."

I'm pretty frustrated now since it's almost 2 game years of preparing for this one thing :P

Is there a way to make those? or even make an adamantine siege engine?

DF Gameplay Questions / Farm Plots... no seeds.
« on: December 10, 2007, 06:09:00 pm »
I seem to have problems with seemly easy things lately and unable to use the search funciton wisely since I can't find anything with it...

In the latest version (e), I can't seem to get farm plots to work anymore... my usual tactic was to make a room bordering a pond or river with damp soil and make a plot there.  Now, twice tried and ready to give up, I've done this in the new version and I get the message "No Seeds Available" and I've got a stack of 50 within 5 squares from the farm area.

What noob thing am I doing wrong here? It's on soil like it usually is, I even tried fertalizing it  :(
