The easiest way without a ton of trouble is probably just to seal off the ledge with the cave spider in it.

Otherwise you'll have to forbid everything from the stocks menu or designate the area forbidden.

first of all, don't worry if your fortress drowns in magma. as long as you have a fail-safe, the worst that can happen is that you'll lose a few dwarves. Whenever you're digging a water/magmaworks though, just make sure to imagine any escape routes the fluid has, and make sure to close off the exit with something. (for example, putting door(s) in front of the stairway in a pumping tower)
second of all, losing is fun :P

Just make a fortress, lock about 10,000 units of food and booze into a room with a single dwarf in the depths of your mountain, turn off immigration, trading, and moods, chasm all the leftover bits, and flood/kill the rest of the dwarves and let him stay locked away for a long while.

So, i had a dwarf go into a fey mood and make an artifact pig iron buckler. My question is, how does it compare to steel, if it even has any armor value?

I think the problem with using shortest-path calcs is the sheer amount of path processing it would take. you'd have to calculate the path length to an arbitrary number of allowed items.

Basically, imagine if DF locked up for a good 5 seconds every time a mason went to choose a stone.

the search function isn't really a separate function at all - you just type in what you want at the depot menu and it automatically filters items for you.

I'm not really sure why, but one of my children climbed up to the second level of my glass tower and started taking down a wall that i had designated to be removed.
