DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Military Concerns

I'm having a heck of a time setting up a functioning military. I started by recruiting about ten dwarfs and trying to set a squad leader that was pretty tough, one of my original 7 actually. Built a barraks and assigned beds with small assigned beds for each one - unfortunately, they like to sleep on the floor near the beds. May be because Ii set a room next door with a weapons rack made barraks - hoping they would spar - , but not really sure. I took away the bed assignments and now any dwarf, a bunch of immigrants just arrived, sleep there.
I also cant get the hang of the military screen. Anyone know how to be certain they have a squad leader?
Basically, i'm looking for any general military advice on how to set up squads and get them patrolling specific areas, sparing, etc.
I haven't had a big attack yet, but i'm in my third year and i figure it's coming.
