I once tried a terrifying tundra biome. The wagon spawned, and 15 urste's away was an undead zombie polar bear. I had almost got my dwarfs underground before it arrived, but it followed them down. 7 dwarfs in a small, dirty hole in the ground, and standing in the staircase was an huge, angry bear. An undead bear. I militarized everyone, but they were just slaughtered.

You flinch whenever someone talks about circus's.

Save is the old save, which is here:
((OOC: OK, I'm posting the save here: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=10807

I only made it to winter, but I'm not going to have time to work on this and it's not fair to keep the fort captive.  Sorry guys  :(  ))

Overseer's Log, Autumn

Limestone

Well, the month had barely begun before I got a fresh dose of who-cares:

Why they tell me this stuff I will never know.  I ordered construction started on a road, since the trees are getting so thick outside there's going to be a problem soon.  If something invades, we won't know about it until it's at the walls!  No sooner had they started sorting blocks than a horrible noise came from deep below.  It sounded like the fortress was collapsing, but it seems our "visitors" weren't getting along:

Ngoso got the worst of it, and is now dead as a hammer.  Good riddance.

Gah!! What did I tell you lot about the trees?!

Rakust is a cheerful enough sort, came bustling in all grins and good humors to tell me that our Baron is now a Duke.  Well, that's lovely... just what we need, even bigger nobles.  Oh joy, oh bliss.  He didn't know much in the way of gossip:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But he did tell me the mountainhome was giving good prices on some stuff:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We gave him some gossip to take with him too, unfortunately... seems ol' Fatty got himself re-elected.  I will never know what the others see in that dwarf.

Well, at the end of the month, there was a party.

Supposedly it was to celebrate being a duchy... why, couldn't tell you, but that's what they told me.  Then another party; then another.  Seemed like every dwarf that passed me in the halls was inviting me to SOMETHING.  Couldn't even eat my roast without a bunch of cheering yokels sloshing ale over me as they sang and danced.  I hate this job.

Sandstone

Not a month can pass without some idiot going bonkers over an item.

This month is no exception.  Urvad came running up to me and said:

"You mean migrants?  How many?"

"No", he replied, "I said migrant.  And I meant it.  Just one.  Some sort of doctor."  Great.  More mouths to feed.

Timber

Any month named after trees is suspect.  Fatty was up to his usual tricks:

And, as if that weren't a big enough pain in the arse, our deceased guest down below got replaced!

I tell you, sometimes it's all too much.

WHY DO THEY... ARGH.  I can't take much more of this... one more pointless announcement like that, and I swear I'm going to...

That's it.  He sits in a giant pile of everything on earth and swears he can't find what he wants.  I'm done.  To hell with this.  I'm migrating to another fort where I can work on my metal in peace; at least when the forge clangs, something is being made.  Faugh!

I didn't really get anything done, so just revert to an earlier save.

My advice:
1) We have 80+ candy wafers: they make great weapons
2) The militia really needs armour. We have the steel. Get to it
3) I would consolidate the stone workshops if I were you: They are spread out oll over the place.
4) I wanted to make a marksdwarf outpost by the bridge over the chasm. It would probablly be a good idea if someone did that.
5) food and booze are in good condition (I want more booze anyway).

Stuff has come up again  >:(
I cannot finish my year. I pass the turn on, and ask for another year.

i had a bit of luck with terrifying tundra biomes. a good number of slow movie undead creatures, on the map most of the time, and getting settled in is a bit more challenging. the real trick is to get a place where you still have decent access to all of the other civs, though.
I do the same, it's great fun. Last fort I tried this on had a population of 2 for about 3 years. Their job was to make slabs for the migrents that died when they ran into the hoard of undead. The only thing you have to really do is
a) make a moat
b) make a block wall by the moat
add a bridge, and the fort is impenetrable

I have the save and will get started on it later today.

After taking a look at things, and checking out the stocks, I have made some goals for my time as overseer.

1) Seal off part of the cavren
2) Finish armouring the militia with Steel and Candy.
3) Build an Above-ground tower for training the militia.
4) Use the river to make some waterwheels. (Someone else can find a use for them).

The magma tomb is mine. I was planing on flooding it after I died, to be buried in lava.

Reminds me of a fort I once had. I was in a thrall cloud zone, and a migrant wave spawned inside of it. By the time that I had closed the bridge, my fort had gone from 30 dwarfs (excluding migrants) to 3 (A mason, an engraver, and a child). I spent the next year making slabs and engraving them, because there was no way I was going to open the door.  Another migrant wave arrived, and everyone was killed by the thrall of the previous militia commander. No were beasts at that fort, but who needs them when a single thrall can kill an entire migrant wave.

I've often thought the structure was ideal for the creation of Greek Tragedies.
Your wording was a little off, so I fixed it for you.

Honestly the boars would have potentially killed Muthkat if the war bears hadn't gotten thier attention. They bruised the shit out of her (and everyone else in her squad but her especially because of the two-hander,) when suddenly DISTRACTION WAR BEARS!
The War Bears weren't the distraction. You were the distraction, then SURPRISE WAR BEAR ATTACK.

Engrave a masterwork image of itself on a wall. The Cheese is eating a dwarf.

WWUD if cheese was the only food that he could eat?

Quick check before my curiosity gets the better of me: I can't read any posts? Not even year 2? Or is it just the year before my turn that I have to ignore?

-snip-
I don't have a "hauling" caste dedicated to hauling shit around, I just turn hauling off for important dorfs like miners.
Isn't that how everyone does it?
