This could possibly be used as a new food source. Massed small animal trappers plus some ducks or pigs. If they can root and find vermin anywhere, then food on a glacier is solved.
But dwarves can't eat vermin. Can they?

I'm down to six dwarves of my starting seven, before the first migrant wave. And I've also discovered the magma sea.

Those two things are related.

that's how you get the delicious tablets and books in a necro tower. ;)

Well, you do need DFHack to get updated first, so we can embark anywhere...

Delicious, and unfortunately completely useless for fort mode. But build the slab somewhere accessible, retire the fort, and visit it as an adventurer! Free necromancy! Yaaay!

Well, it makes controlling the value of worker-class rooms a bit easier.
So that's a thing.

Just this.

I've had issues with tantruming officials before because I missed a square of platinum somewhere that got smoothed and engraved. Dat telepathy, though.
Why aren't you just filling the noble's room with platinum chairs?
I had two nobles. One was a count and the other was a mayor. The count had the awesomesauce room, and I had to limit the mayor's quarters as a result of not wanting to offend the count. The count didn't care about the platinum floor, but it gave the mayor a seizure or something when he found out about it.

I miss DF hack's autokill feature that lets me kill creatures that are blocking more interesting beasts from appearing.

for example, there a group of troglodytes hanging on a wall jerking each other off and I would really like them to go away so I can perhaps get a giant cave spider to spawn.
That happened to me. Then a forgotten beast showed up, murdered half of them, and got killed by one which promptly bled out. Then 40.02 hit and I haven't looked to see what was going on in the caves since then, although I think I saw a large rat running around down there after the trogs left.

I keep giggling to myself when I see people posting about missing Therapist and tilesets. I've never used a tileset or Therapist, and though it was a little hard to adjust to life without DFHack, it wasn't a crippling change.

Honestly, why does anyone use tilesets? ASCii is fine for me.

The bug actually just prevented creatures from growing at all if their birth moments were not divisible by ten. (Because the game checked and updated size only every ten ticks.)

Yeah... it was really weird.

What do the information screens say about their personalities and stuff? I've noticed the more aloof dwarves are more likely to slack off and not pick up jobs (low discipline?) And nervous dwarves are more prone to fleeing in terror from an attacker...

I'd guess that Lich is correct. Dwarven personalities affect how often and how hard they'll actually do work. You may just have gotten a particularly lazy bunch of dorfs.

If so, I'd just delete and start over. You can wait for migrants if you feel like it's worth it. They might be harder workers.

As soon as the miners removed the ramps, save for an entrance front and back, we were pretty secure. In fact, once I get some mechanisms built, we'll be able to seal up completely via drawbridges and build with some safety.

Goblins, elves, and other invaders can climb now. You're not safe unless you have smooth walls in between you and whatever you're defending from.

I haven't unpaused yet. I embarked to this volcano without knowing what I was getting into. This is perfect. I get accessible magma for forges and defense, easily-mined gold for early crafts, a sheer drop to sculpt into whatever fortress entrance I want, and even a bunch of trees way down to the left at the base of a 35-z cliff. Evenpaddles will be the stuff of legend!

...at least until Toady updates and I have to ditch the save.

Shouldn't this be in DF general discussion?

Technically, maybe. Most people don't really care as much what their world looks like for adventurer mode as for fortress mode.

Also, vjek: thanks so much for doing this! I've always had a huge measure of respect for you and all the wonderful work you've done on the last thread, and it's great to see you keep it up through the update. :)

Also use the H key for the hotkeys menu.

In case you didn't know.

Got a siege in early Autumn of the first year.  Dwarf population: 9.  Goblin army size: 10.  They seem to be operating in two squads of 5, with a bowman in one squad and a crossbowman in the other.  I was able to wall myself in, so they can't hurt me at the moment, but... man.

Well, damn. That's why I embarked to a volcanic island. I still get caravans somehow but no sieges or ambushes or thieves have showed up.
