Works great, especially if you start with this system instead of trying to shift over once your fort has been running for twenty five years.

Any way to use DFHack to memorialize caravan guards?
I had to resort to mass producing coffins instead, and collect the body when that happened.
I'm somewhat happy to hear I'm not the only one that happened to.

The body is currently wandering around outside massacring all the migrants that so foolishly show up to my reanimating biome that has heinous gloom thralling clouds.

So I ask again: Any way to use DFHack to memorialize caravan guards?

I've devised a system to pump magma through my mist generator, so now I will have near-fireproof dwarves and magma! Two dorfiness points for the price of one in three dwarves dying!

I'd call that an acceptable fatality rate, as long as you can keep the tantrum spiral under control.

Welcome to Valefortress. We hope you enjoy your stay.

*sigh*

And I thought danger rooms were exploitative...

532
First, a giant cube of dirt beats on the falling victim. Then, its buddy throws the spears at the falling victim. The game processes them as two seperate attacks. The code that creates a dirt cube weapon is the only part run if you fall on a floor that doesn't contain a spike trap.

And yet the fact that there is an upright spear seems to have some impact on the skill gain, even though the skill gain takes place before the spear's "attack." Is the spear factored into the first attack - the giant cube of dirt - at all? It must be or we'd have legendary dwarves showing up all the time from falling in cave-ins and the like.

And a weaponsmith went fey and made this for her to wield when she gets out:

Either that, or I'll add her to the Duchess' squad and the Duchess can train her in the art of lashing. I'm not sure yet.

Yeah, that sounds right.

Do we classify this as an actual glitch, or was the game intended to give substantial amounts of combat training for falling on spears? Given the specific circumstances involved I'd say it's an actual glitch. Whether or not it's a data overflow is another matter. Theoretically, Toady's code could be giving a value that it considers correct, even if all of us players recognize that it's absurd.

I'd also like to know exactly which skill is being trained. It's Fighter, right? If it's weapon skill then this makes even less sense than I thought.

535
If it is an overflow, related to damage calc, then you need to have a goblin subject that fits the profile for the overflow to get triggered.

Basically, the goblin's armor needs to be the same kind, he needs to fall from about the same height, needs to have similar body weight, and needs to have similar armor user and dodger skills.

Otherwise the overflow won't happen the same way.

Do remember: the OP records at least three separate instances of this happening, each time with a similar result and yet with entirely different goblin creatures. That makes me doubt (if it's an overflow) that it has anything to do with armor, weaponry, or previous skill. Toady might be able to offer some input but it's pretty unlikely that he will.

And now we have an instance of the same thing happening to a dwarf. So creature type has nothing to do with it either.

536
I just adapted your method to a magma landmine system. It's working perfectly. Incinerated a few goblin squads from a siege with it today.

Now my only remaining problem is coverage. I have five mines so far, but it's not enough. Only the lower right quadrant is under the shadow of doom.

As if the unholy vapors, that cause instant fatal bleeding from every body part, weren't enough, I have done the unthinkable: I have constructed magma land mines.

The world will burn...

538
This seems kind of like the effect of danger rooms.

I would venture a guess that the distance the goblins fall has something to do with the amount of experience they gain in the fighter skill from getting hit by the spear when they land. It does seem a little glitchy and absurd that they would get thousands and thousands of experience from it, though.

Keep copies of the save, with testable goblins if possible. If this is a unique event, at least we'll still have a record of it, and if not, then we can analyze this one to see why.

Well, problem resolved. A year of dumping activity fixed it.

22-year-old fortress now running at 90+ FPS. :D

Yeah, that's approximately what I wound up doing. Or rather, what I am doing. The process is going to take a while - not as long as it took my dwarves to carry every single bar up from the original magma works, but still pretty damn long. I can't quite justify DFHack, even though this fort abuses map edge caravan arrival and danger rooms.

I'm having the dorfs dump everything right onto the QSP. Not sure what I'll do with all these bins... after I switch over entirely to QSP, they'll be completely unnecessary. I guess I'll trade them away and melt them down.
