'I know enough to not flood my fortress probably and when I talk about the game to non DF players their eyes gloss over'

This has been me since about two weeks after starting to play in earnest. I just now realized it.

Setting up a ballista in the meeting/dining hall and using wood ballista arrows usually gets some hospital candidates. The ballistae are bugged right now and only deal blunt damage. Plus you also train siege operators!

Tried this. It one-shotted a child and a legendary stonecrafter then mauled a cat before stopping. (It's K, I have many children and billions of stonecrafters.) But I am disappoint.

Hm.

I checked my unit lists.

The peacock no longer exists. I'm not making this up. I think she swallowed it whole...

Is there a hatch over the dumping pit? He might have flown out.

They can fly? I thought they were entirely ground bound, since I've never seen one flying before.

I can put hatches over the pits and lock them. Thanks.

Waterfalls! Everywhere throughout the fortress where you can pipe water and connect a floodgate to the output! Just make sure the drains are ample.

Of course, that's rather mundane compared to my first brainwave. (Kitten/Puppy dispensers on repeat, dropping fleshbags all over the fort to condition your dwarves against tragedy.)

Someone tell me why the caravan didn't bring wagons and didn't show up on the edge of the map in the caverns, but rather on the far corner of the surface level?

The whole 'not bringing wagons' thing is pissing me off. I heard the caravan can arrive through the caves, so why...?

I'm pretty sure it's a bug, as I've had military dwarves with the same problem: never putting on more than one gauntlet/boot, and/or refusing to put on gauntlets/boots period.
Just assign two boots.

I did.

My VERY first fortress had a cave-in somewhere in the caverns when I opened the game. I couldn't figure out why my screen was black. I abandoned and didn't come back to DF until some time later.

I'll start with the updating tomorrow.

It's two days past tomorrow.

I'm confused. One of the peacocks has vanished completely.

There were five tossed into the pit. One died of suffocation after one of his fellows pecked him in the neck and got his spinal cord. Another has completely vanished: no skeleton, no corpse, nothing.

Did... did she... eat it...?!

Had an initial speedbump to take care of; the duchess was getting pissed that little Oddom had an artifact bed, so we switched it for a tunnel tube one. Necessitated redoing the entire setup, but everything's in place now, so things are moving along.

I'll commence records of the child's skills and attributes via screenshot from here on out. If I remember to do it properly, it'll be every three months. Caravans shall be my reminder. And I'll just try to remember for winter.

So far, rates of attack by the cocks on the child have been very very low. Everyone's ignoring the meeting zone. The child sleeps on the booze stockpile as often as on her bed. I'm not sure why any of these things are happening, but that's the facts. I think it's going to be a very very slow process unlikely to culminate with a supersoldier - more likely, Oddom will spend her entire childhood in a terrible place away from friends and family and be released when she's thirteen with little or no overall improvement other than (perhaps) no friendships, no social skills, and some tragedy training.

We'll see.

I have begun my experiment.

  • 5 Blue Peacocks
  • Around 200 food, around 100 booze
  • One Artifact bed worth $55,600
  • One mad duchess (#@%*& jealousy)
  • One meeting zone that the cell's occupants totally ignore
  • One Dwarven Child:

Here's a picture of the setup:

In case this works, I've dug out other cells nearby. There are holes in the ceilings of each cell and I can drop in food, booze, clothes, whatever the kid needs.

Don't mercilessly slaughter her. Keep her caged and use her for live uhhhh dead uhhhh undead...? training of your military dwarves.

What about reanimating/otherwise deadly biomes?

...no, wait, I'm ahead of myself. I'll... cross those bridges when I come to them.

I do use the pause button a lot. It's my favorite tool for examining situations and making sure things happen in proper orders.
