DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Forgotten Beasts Can't Climb
« on: April 03, 2016, 01:41:04 pm »
So, I opened up cavern 3, and immediately learned of a forgotten beast. It looked, and notice it was sitting in the branches of a spore tree in the middle of a subterranean lake. Nearby is the corpse of another forgotten beast.

I'm guessing it's going to stay there for the remainder of the game. Is this a reported bug?

Try watching particular dwarves going about their daily life. Maybe pick a few in particular and give them nice bedrooms and particular offices. Make up a rationalization for their privileged status, and start building the fort around their imagined lives?

Or play sloppily and watch the drama as things go wrong. That's another approach.

Sometimes I'll set up a magma chute and go through the stocks, designated "dump" to everything X or worse.

It's not a perfect solution, but since things tend to stack together, then I can dump long lengths of junk at once.

Thanks guys for sharing that you have dances; I've never seen one myself. Nor have I seen anyone play one of the many fine instruments built in my tavern. I have to admit, I had started to lose interest in the whole tavern scene, but now I'm thinking of giving my dwarves a year off and seeing what happens.

It is annoying that performance skills are rusting when I have plenty of instruments, though.
Definitely annoying.

I've seen a good deal of poetry and storytelling. I've seen a few dances, I think. But I've never noticed them singing or playing musical instruments.

I think I saw a human snatcher once.

That's not fun yet, though it potentially could be.

It's a cavern, which is potentially dangerous but not decisively lethal. Check the wiki.

Perhaps related, I've made multiple instruments of multiple kinds, traded for them, stocked my tavern, even installed a few big ones...

But I've never seen them played.

I've looked over my dwarves, and there are definitely some who have the skill.

Am I missing something?

I got a mad rash of yellow arrows after my first siege, and they never went away.

Personally, I do not use all-inclusive finished goods stockpiles.  They cause too many problems.  All of your book-industry products will be better off just sitting in the workshops where they were made, until needed.

Exactly this. This is a rather useful piece of general advice. Ideally you want:

* A stockpile for mugs, if you have a tavern (ideally in the tavern).
* A stockpile for book-related finished goods, if you have a library (also ideally in the library).
* A stockpile for musical instruments if you have taverns or temples (one in each if you feel like it).
* A stockpile for splints and crutches (also again, guess where best to put them).
* A stockpile for non-armor clothing.
* A stockpile for misc. finished goods you might not want to sell (quivers, ropes, etc).
* And finally, all the useless crap you export.
In other words, what this guy said ^^^.

Probably a dumb question...

I have had the dwarves write on quires. I have had them make book bindings. But when I ask them to bind a book, they insist that no bindings are available.

Turns out the bindings in question are in a bin in a finished goods stockpile.

Is there some reason the dwarves can't access this particular bin?
If someone so much as thinks about doing anything involving the bin, the entire thing becomes unusable until that job completes. Does the bin have mixed contents that dwarves want to take/add? Try forbidding the bin, then possibly unforbidding right as you want the binding job taken (just in case forbidding the bin prevents the contents from being used for binding.) A feeder stockpile or binding-specific stockpile is a more permanent solution.
Yeah, it was definitely a bin bug. I went through standard un-binning protocol, and once the book bindings were unbound from their bins, the dwarves got binding.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarven Treadmills
« on: March 24, 2016, 11:06:21 am »
Screwpumps can already be operated on dwarfpower, and the other two machine components, rollers and millstones, do things that dwarfs can already do by hand. The only uses I can see for this treadmill would be physically isolating the dwarfs from the devices that needs power (irrelevant for the case of the millstone), setting up a manually powered millstone (which I'm not even sure is worth it - is a millstone over twice as fast as a quern?) and acting as a back up to a waterwheel or windmill. Perhaps if a particularly strong dwarf (or a draft animal) can produce more than 10 power, there might be a way to use it to increase a pumpstack's efficiency, but overall I see very little use for a treadmill unless it can be used with draft animals, and it'll be quite some time until those are even implemented.
I think the ability to physically isolate the supply from the output could be cool, but I do see that that's a relatively minor thing.

Like screw pumps, except these generate power that can be transferred to machinery.

Is this still a thing today in 2016?
Try it and see?
