DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?
« on: March 03, 2016, 08:16:52 pm »
So, the crowd of people turned out to be travelers going from place to place. I let them be.

Then after some more excursions, including the establishment of another government in another sacked castle, I wandered back to The Perfect Bastion and met a bard at the well outside. He seemed disinterested, didn't even know who I was! I wandered back to my keep to rest for the night, but when I awoke, he was there. I told him some stories for amusement, and was roundly ridiculed, as he related to me a fine retelling he'd experienced at The Onions of Swallowing.*

So I slept, and awoke, and told another story that disinterested everyone. Then I asked him of troubles, he mentioned my claiming of the castle. I asked him if he knew where I was, he said he didn't. So I asked again for troubles, and learned of a hydra in Coveredgorge, far to the southeast.

Looks like another journey is afoot...

* Happens to be the tavern at the fort I'd retired in this world a while ago. It's a small world.

Loyalty cascades cascade to the friends of those involved in the fight, who then join the fight, which cascades to the friends of those now involved... However, the further rounds of the cascade might possibly not cause the newly affected to immediately join the battle until their friends are killed.

Short answer: yes.
Ah, that's what I thought. Thanks!

Maybe a way of highlighting living creatures so at least you have to notice them before your companions take off at full sprint?

So, I've established myself in an empty castle surrounded by an empty, mostly sacked town. There's a temple full of brigands nearby, a bunch of abandoned merchandise on my doorstep. My kingdom is situated on the eastern shore of an inland sea.

I took a jaunt with my loyal retainers to explore the territories to the south, and found a few hamlets ruled by another lord. I could explore further and seek this person out, but I decided I better get back and check up on the fort. It'd been recently surrounded by camps, though nobody has come in yet to rearrange the rubble.

I wandered through a town to the west, and noticed a camp lingering in the fields. I came closer, and encountered a goblin. When the goblin didn't tell me who he was loyal to, I struck him down. Then I saw a mixed crowd of humans and a few goblins nearby, standing in an odd squarish formation.

I am badly outnumbered, but heavily armed and armored. I fear I may have to deal with these as well.

Stay tuned...

okay.....i have downloaded the game and created a world, the only problem now is that i am completely lost on what to do. any tips?

They tricked you into downloading the basic version.

As a new player, you'll probably want to get the LNP that includes graphics and useful tools.
I disagree. A new player should try the vanilla game. Mods and tools are for later.

A new player shouldn't struggle to change labors without Dwarf Therapist. Or to understand what is a cat and what is a wall without graphics.
I figured it out pretty quickly.

Mind, I had a background in roguelikes (NetHack, Dungeon Crawl) to help me along...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Werebeast Help

So i ended up just waiting for him to turn again and then killing him with one of my squads. Im positive he was killed while in "Were" form but the strangest thing happened after. Couple months later i end up with one of my axeLORDS dead in a fight with another dwarf. He was just a trainee compared to the lord but more digging revealed the lord put down a stonecrafter that had (for whatever reason) began attacking him (not sparring, full fight) during training.

Start of a possible loyalty cascade? Unsure as of now and ill wait a little longer until then. But the current casualties stand at one axelord, a stonecrafter, and the possible cause, one lone werelizard dwarf.

Also no tavern exists so there's no chance of drunkenness being the cause. As far as i can tell the stonecrafter just randomly started attacking the axelord who promptly killed him, and then found himself falling to a comrades axe from a separate squad (they also train in separate areas many Z-levels apart).

I don't know as of now if that particular axe lord dealt the killing blow to the werebeast, but multiple dwarfs attacked the beast and so far no one else has been killed.

Final note, seams the axe dwarf that killed the lord is missing all his teeth, probally got punched out or something during his brawl...
This happened to me too. In my case, I sicced my troops on a werebeast after it turned. Immediately after, the soldiers began killing each other.

What was really weird was that after a short but noticeable pause, another fight broke out, and before long I'd lost half of the fort to infighting. The resulting heap of corpses and injuries eventually led the entire fort to death by framerate.

Do loyalty cascades extend beyond the initial combatants?

question: What is the difference between channeling and digging? and what is a "Z-Level"?
All of this is in the wiki. Though I remember having some trouble with understanding channeling...

If the X axis looks north, and the Y axis looks east, then Z axis looks up into the stars.

Digging is moving laterally underground, as if you were digging a tunnel.

Channeling is digging laterally and down, as if digging a ditch.

Seriously, go search the wiki. It's all there. Specifically, read this: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide

And have fun!

DF Suggestions / Re: Delay Between Wild Animal Migrations

Maybe they could follow some kind of migration pattern based on the world map? There are seasons already, and IRL migrating animals tend to follow seasonal weather patterns...

Hearthpeople (persons?)

How does one acquire them? I'm getting a lot of apologies and my town feels kind of empty.

And for that matter, once ransacked, do people ever re-settle towns?

355
So, I've become a lord, ruling through The Perfect Bastion.  Now what?
Now you crush the peons under your boot and wait for the money and wenches to roll in.
Well, it looks like the town is entirely abandoned. There are some active shops, but nobody seems to be watching them. Do I need to advertise to get some citizens so I can then crush them under my boot?

Or maybe go ask all of those random soldiers loitering in the temple basement nearby. But there's no way in without climbing, and I don't want to take on that fight alone, just yet. The minions won't follow me down.

DF Suggestions / Re: Should Weapons/Armor/Stuff be able to break?

Another observation is that some of the prized metals for blunt weapons, such as silver, while very dense, are also very malleable.

I noticed for instance that sterling silver, which doesn't do much in-game, is used IRL because pure silver is too soft for many practical applications.

I generally just use the "marker-only" designations within DF to come up with schematics. It helps me match them to the landscape I will be building/digging in. What advantages do you find to using 3rd party program to design? (other than interface)

(See the avatar? I made that in MSPaint.)

Damn that's impressive...
For one thing, I'd find it difficult to make circular or non-square designs on DF without using a schematic. With paint I can use the "draw circle" tool and simply count the pixels.

Also, I've recently started working on 3D designs using specific color patterns, which don't show in the "designate" menu. I also don't think you can do that for surface constructions.
