DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Microsoft Paint

What got me started using paint was finding a way to make circles pixel by pixel with a predetermined diameter. It's pretty good for that, especially since you can see the measurements.

Doing more complicated stuff, yeah. I imagine there should be a more user-friendly program.

That's why I built a contraption to flood entire fortress with magma (except safe room, which is obsidianized at entrance instead) and then drain it.
Used it more times than I expected to as well.
Hmm. Yes. I'm usually a more sympathetic player far as the dorfs are concerned, but I do see the appeal. And magma means no bodies to fill the fort with time-consuming rot.

Yeah, you have too many units.
It appears you have a better CPU but it doesn't means it can take that much.
The default population settings (200 dwarves) are already outdated.
Yes, I have a pretty powerful machine, and yes, I need to mod down the population cap, as well as the guest cap.

Did I mention that this fort was harboring something like 100 guests? :o

Am I the only one who finds this program extremely handy for doing basic schematics?

Typically it's the pathfinding that slows the game down, which you're not going to get anything done without. If your problem is miasma, you can dump all the corpses outside where they won't produce it, or atomsmash and engrave slab. It probably requires DFHack autodump for you at this point.
I gave up on the game. Problem with non-automated methods would be they'd still take days (I guess) of real time just to dump five corpses between dwarven priorities (they seem to prefer grabbing clothing to dealing with bodies or coffins) and the general atmosphere of lag.

If I'd intended to keep the game at all costs, I think what I'd have done was let it run passively and check it every half hour or so until the FPS went up again (whenever that happened?). I just decided that it wasn't worth it.

I imagine DFHack would have a better solution, but to my knowledge it's not flush with the latest version yet.

Last time I had a big bloodbath (tantrum spiral instigated by a giant olm attack) I sat back for and let the game run for an hour or so while I ate dinner, then came back to find one survivor, and rebuilt from there.

This time I just didn't have the patience for it.

The fort was pretty close to retirement anyway. And so I retired and then decided to go explore it as an adventurer (something I haven't done before) which was kind of fun, though the area around the fort is still really laggy even in adventure mode.

I've decided to continue with the fort, despite the fact that I've lost half my dwarves. Hopefully we'll recover swiftly.

You can read the story of the were-beast's arrival, and the events which lead to the loyalty cascade, here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=156525.msg6841980#msg6841980
Had a similar mess with a 200+ dwarf fort. The bloodbath took it down to 97, and after that the framerate became so abysmal (I can only guess due to miasma clouds?) that I gave up and retired.

So, that loyalty cascade wiped out half the fort.

Now it's running at FPS 0 (things are actually moving, but that's about all that can be said.) I'm getting tempted to quit, but I'd like to leave it feeling like they cleaned up the mess.

Bloody miasma...

I often combine carpentry with wood/stone crafting and mechanics on embark. Also, gem cutting. All of these are important skills in early game, but none of them are always important the way masonry or mining are.

So, here's my situation. I've got what I think of as a late-stage fort. It just lost about half of its population (200, and then another 100 or so guests.) A dwarf contracted lycanthropy, and so I solved the problem with a militia hit. This led to a loyalty cascade that wiped out over 100 dwarves in relatively short time. Thanks to strange priorities and the usual, these were not buried immediately, and so the fort, which ahd previously been running at a tolerable 16 or so FPS, is running at zero. Things are moving, but at a rate that is incredibly slow.

I don't quite wish to quit, yet. I'd like to tie off a few things, satisfy my internal perfectionist, etc. But I don't want to have to sit and watch as it sluggishly calculates the exact position of every miasma cloud.

Would it be possible to set up a mode that would temporarily switch off the visual interface or non-priority events in the interest of speed? Say...run X clicks unless an interrupting event occurs?

So, I got a werebear. And so, I decided to have some fun and took care of it with the military. I hadn't bothered to research what happens when you kill one of your own under the curse of lycanthropy. Now I have a better appreciation for the words "loyalty cascade."

I've lost about half of a 200+ fort.

My current favorite highlight was checking a combat report to find out that a bard had picked a fight with the chief medical dwarf.  He was hitting him on the head with a musical instrument called a rigoth (use your imagination? it's not one my civilization produces.) The CMD was already hurting, and was a recent promotion from peasantry because the previous CMD had already deceased. The CMD, after taking a beating, turned the tide of battle and ended it by throttling the bard. Based on a quick skim, it looks like he has a cracked rib.

Don't mess with the medic.

Getting close to completing statue #2, contemplating building the royal chambers, figuring out how to lure the FB to its doom so I can retire this fort properly...

And a werebear shows up and manages to bite Amost the adept glassmaker before being slain by the militia.

This could get interesting...

Worst case scenario, I won't have to worry about the overcrowded tavern and surplus entertainers...  :o

Woot!!! :D

And would this challenge at more fun to the game, or just tedium?

I also agree that it's an excellent suggestion. Has anyone actually posted it to the suggestions thread?

Might be something to focus less on individual tasks and more on task flow.
