DF Gameplay Questions / 0.40.03 Dwarfs falling from trees
« on: July 14, 2014, 06:10:32 am »
So my dwarfs keep climbing trees and then falling from them and dying, it doesn't happen too regularly but occasionally, a goblin also got stuck in a tree and I was technically under siege for several ingame months, any way to solve it and does this count as a bug?

A mechanic built the first pump in a magma pump stack on top of himself, knocking him into the magma and killing him

Dear Urist McMechanic

Despite the lack of an exit from your current location that does NOT mean you have to jump into some water and drown yourself, learn to have some patience.

I've really just got the same thing as you, most of my previous forts failed due to awful, and I mean AWFUL military, I just had no idea how to use it as well as little to no understanding of how some of the buildings worked and the mechanics components of the games, but once I'd read up on all this, my current fortress is going really well, only losing 2 or 3 dwarves per siege, planning on building a huge above ground tower and plenty of other stuff, like you it's really just finally clicked for me, partially cos I've had a hell of a lot of time in these holidays (I'm still at school) to really learn the mechanics and get into it, now I'm pretty much addicted.

hehe brofist to you too, but my incredibly unlucky/lucky miner managed to get injured... again, despite his odd capacity to always survive he always manages to get injured too.

My suggestion would be to collapse NATURAL WALLS onto it. NOT built walls.
It worked! took a bit of organising working out which bits to channel out but managed to do it in the end, thanks  :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Accidentally draining river
« on: August 30, 2013, 08:33:34 am »
Early in my current fort I accidentally flooded it due to being new and not having an understanding of the water pressure mechanics at the time, as a result I had to build a tunnel down to the first caverns to drain the water into, now, several dorf years later the river is noticeably draining, is there anyway I can block off the drainage tunnel to stop the caves from filling up and keep the river up. This problem's also caused the water pressure in some other things to be lower, should I just pump water back up from the caves or is there another way to stop the water flowing from the river into the caves?
Edit: And yes I was stupid/forgetful enough not to put a master floodgate at the first point where the river water comes into the fortress.

Just keep lots of floodgates along the way for safety, only makes it a bit safer though.

He has shown up as thirsty and hungry though while he's unconscious and has been fed and given water by the other dwarves.

When I was digging out a death pit recently one of my dwarves was crushed in a cave in, he managed to survive and was in the hospital for a year, now he seems to have recovered and has been for a few months but he's still unconscious and doesn't want to wake up or do any jobs, the injuries were breaks in his legs and something in his hand I believe so nothing brain related although it does say his knee is infected, could that be why he's refusing to wake up?

Ahhhhhh thanks very much, I'll try and move armour stockpiles around and stuff so that they won't go up to the surface.

But they're on completely different z-levels there's simply no way they could have line of sight, different z levels with several walls between them and the gobs. And ok on the pit thing I'll just occasionally pump some magma into it then.
