Life Advice / Re: I'm incredibly paranoid about the N. Fowleri ameoba.

I worry about it too.  It has me pretty adverse to visiting tourist attraction hot spring resorts and seedy looking hot tubs.

I was never concerned with it being in the river though.  The ones we always swim in are always so clear and filter through so many millions of gallons of water.

Looking it up now I see it can be in any water and there are cases in the United States where it was in the plumbing of municipal water systems.  Time to look up those brita style water filters I guess.

Life Advice / Re: Random question about how phones work
« on: November 30, 2013, 08:40:53 pm »
Moving up a mountain to get to higher ground increased reception when the communication method was radio frequencies like a 2 way radio.  Cell phone signals stay pretty low to the ground climbing up higher actually gives you a lot worse reception.  Unless she is moving towards a tower, heading to the mountain is the wrong way to go.

Even in town it can be hard to get cell phone signal up on certain tall buildings when they should be close to center of your provider's coverage area because the signal doesn't go higher than like 5 stories without help.

General Discussion / A New Dos Equis "Most Interesting Man in the World"
« on: October 07, 2013, 08:44:48 pm »
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Most_Interesting_Man_in_the_World

You've seen him all over the internet.  He doesn't always ___ but when he does he prefers to ___ !

I think it would be amusing for The Most Interesting Man in the World to retire.  Preferably in some grand way like from onboard one of the first Virgin Galactic passenger spaceships in a huge worldwide advertising campaign doing something unbelievable.  If and when he eventually does leave this world though, who do you think we could come up with to take over his title?

Another actor perhaps? Or is there anyone you've seen out there truly deserving the title "The Most Interesting Man in the World"

Life Advice / Re: Mom wants to buy a computer.

November's Black Friday / Cyber Monday is only a month or so away.  It's always been the cheapest time of the year to buy computers, though the recent rules they've been coming up with stretching the deals over the entire Thanksgiving week are starting to become a pain.  You might want to wait and see what they put on sale.

Right now I have giant hobo spiders but when winter rolls around the mice in the fields outside will stop eating all the apples and mushrooms outside and come back inside.  They really do eat anything you don't put in rubbermaid containers.  They ate half a bar of irish spring hand soap last year, on top of an entire loaf of bread and a bunch of random other things still wrapped in plastic that you wouldn't think they could tell it was food.  Check all your cardboard box foods too they might have got into those.

Life Advice / Re: How do you elevate cooking to the next level?
« on: September 03, 2013, 10:26:22 am »
I have a ton of big expensive recipe books but I really prefer http://www.yummly.com/ and occasionally google for visual inspiration and a recipe list that includes whatever ingredient I happen to have with me or want to add.

Its nice knowing how long it would take to cook an ingredient so you know when you need to add it for it to be done.  Its also helpful knowing what each ingredient tastes like on its own.

If I'm going to add a herb mixture or a sauce that I randomly found I make sure to taste it before I put it in so I know it is a flavor that would help the dish.  Also, taste all of your final products.  I once served something that was too salty.  Being too salty is really easy to fix but I had no idea it needed to be fixed because I hadn't tried it myself.

Life Advice / Re: Help me get Loincloth fit in ten months (serious)
« on: August 28, 2013, 05:56:12 pm »
You could buy an exercise ball chair and make that 10 hours of sitting into some midbody work.

Looking ridiculous is sometimes a price you pay.  You could also buy some new shoes and exercise clothes.  Running shoes only tend to last 6 months or 600 miles.  Having some fancy new clothes makes you want to get out and use them or it will feel like wasted money.
