DF Suggestions / Peglegs
« on: September 07, 2013, 02:52:31 am »
Like crutches, except it requires the lack of a lower leg, but not the upper leg. It uses crutch walker skill.
Has the benefit of not requiring any hands, so enabling both a sword and shield.
Has the downside of being affected slightly less by crutch walker skill and not being able to be used for broken or completely missing legs. Lower leg lackings only.
So crutches for your nimble workers who only need one hand at a time, and peglegs for those diehard dwarves.

By the same logic...
Crutchswords?

I am not against the idea but I don't know if this falls under Toady One's talents.
He should be able to commission it, it's not too much work once he's done all he can do.

So I'm the only one who completely loves the DF theme and still have it going after hundreds upon hundreds of hours of playing? :>

(Some new themes for different environments/events would be nice ofc, and I sure hope Toady will one day produce something equally epic as the original ^^)
No, if you read the thread it's clear you're not the only one.
It's just driving some of us nuts.

DF General Discussion / Re: Quantum computing
« on: September 06, 2013, 08:38:38 pm »
Yeah, but it'd still be slow as fuck :P I doubt quantum computers as they are now could handle the standard worldgen calculations in any reasonable time.
Indeed, but Dwarf Fortress estimated completion date is 2030.
Quantum computers should be at least the power of current computers for processing speed by then.
And even well before then, although it might take all day for the history calculation, you won't need any injections of any sort to put in specific characters if you have a copy of DF that's optimized for quantum computers.

DF General Discussion / Quantum computing
« on: September 05, 2013, 11:50:55 pm »
Quantum computers could have some interesting effects on Dwarf Fortress.
For example, correctly set up, world generation wouldn't be hindered by any rejection rate less than 100%.
And you could specify that you want a specific historical figure or something in your world, and have that figure appear by random generation alone. All that is required is that what you want has a chance of occuring that is not 0%. Might have to make the history seeds a fair few digits longer once you start getting into the extremely unlikely though, such as 10 Cacames.

Any other effects/new features you can think of?
From what I know, what current quantum computers do is choose the possibility that returns the lowest value from an unlimited range of possibilities.
So I would expect with some very tricky setting up you can make it calculate every possible seed combination.
Included in the "tricky setting up" part is making the system return only one value, since I think it might not work with two, let alone quintillions.

Other Games / Re: Free Game List
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:38:44 am »
Thrive, although it's being developed at about Dwarf Fortress speed, and has only really just begun with that which can be interacted with.
It's so obscure that unless you know information beyond the name, it's nigh impossible to reach without a link, so http://thrivegame.forum-free.ca/forum
It's going for Dwarf Fortress complexity though I think.
And yes, I think KSP should be removed from the list.

Other Games / Re: How did you last die?
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:32:58 am »
Shot twice and then one hit melee killed in a single turn by a goblin.
Serves me right for trying to play as an Elf, I guess.
As for most recent death in a game other than Dwarf Fortress...
I haven't played any other games since I started playing Dwarf Fortress.

I like instrumental music, and listen to a lot of the Homestuck music (95% of my MP3 player storage).

Life Advice / Re: How do you elevate cooking to the next level?
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:20:02 am »
Work with ingredients by attributes, not names.
For example, Sweet Chilli Sauce has the attributes Medium Sweet, Very Weak Chilli, and Moderately Viscous Sauce, as well as a many other less important ones.
First attribute means I can use it as a sweetner for savoury dishes, since it's a savoury ingredient, but should take care where sweetness would be weird.
Second attribute means that it doesn't really make things noticably spicer because it's so weak, but not less spicy since you can barely dilute spicyness with even very weak spicyness.
Third attribute means it's not watery, but it can still be mixed easily with any nonsolid, though difficulty may be had with the very solid.

Life Advice / Re: I need to learn how to draw :I
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:10:41 am »
Try charging into drawing blindly, just to check if you've got any preinstalled drawing knowledge.
I did that with drawing humanoids recently and found that I already had the skill for body shapes, which should be a very useful starting point.

One of my worlds gets only a tiny fraction of the framerate of my other worlds.
I am using 6x6 embark, what I always use.
I'm pretty sure I've used the world be
256x256 island, year 300, approximately triple the default evil squares, very high volcanism, high savagery, I think a slightly higher starting civilization number, 1000 megabeasts, 3000 semimegabeasts, 500 titans, 300 caves, cave size 500.
Those are all the significant changes to default settings.

Another world has recently started to always crash after a long time of play and when I save.
This has only been a recent issue, beginning mid-fortress.
Pretty much the same as the last one, except very slightly less extreme in the modifications from default, and year 2000.

Anyone have any clue what's going on?

"What's that? A siege you say?"
"Time to lock up all my carnivores for a few weeks without food."
*A while later...*
"Release the carnivores!"
*Wrong level is pulled*
And then fun ensued.

Uhmm, SoundSense?
This is music specific, and designed in more of a DF style.

This seems a little incompatible with animal people. I think I'd prefer a serpent man with a bow to be called a marksserpent, rather then a marksman.
I chose the system with animal people in mind, and would prefer that the fact that they are humanoids is acknowledged.
