language_words   ABATE   ABBEY   ABSOLUTE   ABYSMAL   ABYSS   ACCIDENT   ACE   ACHE   ACRID   ACT   ACTION
ADMIRATION   ADMIRE   ADORE   ADULATE   ADVENTURE   AFFECTION   AFFLICT   AFTER   AGE   AGELESS

That's the simplest way I know to explain it. It goes on for way longer and treats the usage tags as items. They're all condensed down from the middle of the file.

DF General Discussion / Is there an easier way to do this?
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:20:57 pm »
I'm about halfway done alphabetizing language_words by hand, but it really, really sucks to do. Especially knowing I still have all of the racial language raws to do. I tried to use RAW alphabetizer, but it... didn't work out too well. I'd like to get this done before the bug fix cycle ends. Does anyone know of anything that would make this project less of a PITA, or (even better) have already fixed ones?

I think that's understandable.  The sheer number of unresolved reports on the bug tracker is daunting, and yeah, many of the game's systems are a shambles.  You may be able to persuade Toady to spend a little longer on post-release bug-fixing, but eventually he's going to need to focus on new features, to sustain the community's interest and his own.
More big, incomplete features seem to only build big hype and then big disappointments. I'm just saying that NOW we are at a point where I don't think Toady can actually avoid taking care of what he left behind.
I don't really see him avoiding anything. Going by today's dev log, he's already started hammering away at the worst bugs people have found. So... yeah. I don't see why you're demanding that he do bug fixing while he's doing bug fixing. It seems like what you're actually angry about is that he's not working to your expectations, which tells me that you might not understand exactly what the project is about. He's building the game he's always wanted to play, and is generous enough to let you play with what he's made so far for free and with no strings attached. It's actually kind of awesome if you think about it. I might even donate this coming paycheck just to say thank you.

This is basically the first version of what will eventually be Dwarf Fortress. The living world was the whole point. Honestly, I think of all of the versions before this as demos at best. The preliminary work for this update, which is itself the foundation of what the game is supposed to be. Now that all of that preliminary work is done and all of the basic systems are in place, Toady can start filling them out and make the things that happen in the world actually matter in later releases. If you absolutely must have 1.0 with all of its features fully fleshed out and most of the bugs fixed, then I'd personally advise going off and doing something else for the next decade or so. I'm sure you'd have more fun keeping your perspective and enjoying the opportunity to be a volunteer alpha tester for one of the most ambitious projects in game design ever though.

Toady's already said he's not doing multithreading. It's up there with time travel and fortress sewage, IIRC.

Honestly as someone who plays for fortress mode alone, I'm fairly disappointed by having waited two years for largely no great improvements - it's as though we got approximately one or two bullet points out of ten

Two years ago the army arc was all the rage, that seems to have mostly disappeared

I wonder if the devs realize 90% of DF players play fortress mode exclusively, because seems like they shafted us on this release

Other than everything you're saying being false as others have pointed out, people really need to stop thinking of DF as 'fortress mode' and 'adventure mode' and thinking of it as the fantasy world simulator it actually is. Everything added to either mode will eventually tie together. Besides, whining about adventure mode getting attention instead of fortress mode is like whining about feeding starving 3rd world children when we could be spending that money on Hollywood celebrities.

EXACTLY. A lot of people don't seem to get the bigger picture with this thing. Toady is aiming towards a PROCEDURAL FANTASY WORLD GENERATOR, not just a Fortress game or an adventure game. Those are just windows to interact with the world. Presumably we'll eventually have more windows, plus starting scenarios, and whatnot. This update is absolutely the biggest update since Z levels, no question about it. The world is now ALIVE post worldgen, this is a HUGE HUGE HUGE deal. What we have now is the foundations to add everything else mentioned in all the dev notes.

Anyway, for the next big update after bug fixes I am hoping for more site related stuff. I.E. taverns & inns, mines and other industry sites, more realistic village layouts, schedules for NPC's inside sites so they are not just faking activities but actually doing things with an actual purpose and schedule, etc, oh and improvement and expansion of sites for other races as well. Probably throw in the crime and justice stuff along with this, so we have drama and thievery and justice going on inside these improved sites.  Oh and throw in the ghosts and other additional night creatures that Toady hinted at back before DF2012 was released. I want those ruined/abandoned towns to have haunted structures! This stuff should come before the Army ARC in my opinion because it will give the armies and nations things to actually fight over and it provides a framework to start adding real faction diplomacy, politics, etc, I.E. wars and diplomacy with REAL purpose and not just faked or abstracted stuff. I.E. the humans and Dwarves go to war because human miners have taken over a valuable mine near the border and are refusing to leave, etc. I admit this stuff will have more immediate benefit for Adventure Mode players BUT it helps Dwarf Mode in the long term by creating a great foundation for the Army ARC that could come after.
This. This is what I'm waiting for. When we have real taverns and can participate in battles and do things with our new leadership positions. Hopefully it comes out soon. I'm predicting 0.40.02 in... three weeks.

What do you think Rana Magna will work on next? When will it come out?

I just realized. In the next release, we're finally going to get to see NPC dwarves. As far as I remember, there's a bug preventing fortress born NPC critters from reaching full size. Does anyone know if this will still be in?

Within the next few hours. Or the next few hours after that. Or... Well, basically repeat as needed until it's out. :)

DF Suggestions / Re: Fixing the Game Breaking Cage Trap
« on: May 03, 2014, 07:06:23 am »
As far as I'm aware, all of the current traps are basically placeholders anyway. I *think* I recall Toady saying something along the lines of traps in the finished game being entirely player designed. You want a rock fall trap? Then dig a shaft above your entrance and put some platinum boulders at the top.

It'll be next Sunday. I'm sure of it. And even if it isn't, then it'll be the Sunday after that. Or the one after that. Or at most the one after that. Or... Hm... We should make it a drinking game and get wasted every Sunday my standing prediction of it taking exactly one week from whenever now is turns out to be wrong. See ya in detox! :D

And then the release drops and everyone's all excited and tries it out, has some fun, waits until the round of bug fixing and low hanging fruit is done over the next few months, then gets bored and starts hyping themselves up for the next major release 2-3 years away... -.-
