DF Suggestions / Graphic set improvements?
« on: July 26, 2008, 05:27:47 pm »
Closest I've seen to this:
  • Req564, MORE CUSTOMIZATION FOR UNITS, (Future): You can set their type names, but being able to set colors or custom tiles should also be possible.
  • Bloat368, GENDER-BASED PICTURES, (Future): You should be able to further specify which graphical tiles are used if you like.

Mainly this is a question as I'm sure it's been suggested before. Just can't find where and I don't quite feel like performing thread necromancy that much...

I've been wondering if anyone's heard when we might be able to set individual tiles for creatures and items? Like making barrels use tile blah and such. Personally, I use Guybrush's tileset, but I find that quite a few items use tiles that make them look silly... Like up arrows being trees... Or like map features appearing as a weapon rack... :P

I know this is on the big "to do" list, though. Just curious to if it's been put in a specific timetable yet. :3

DF Bug Reports / [39e] Weird demands?
« on: July 25, 2008, 01:20:35 pm »
So my mayor has a pretty spiffy quarters set aside for her. 4x5 Dining room, 4x5 office, 5x5 bedroom... It's not quite "decent" yet, like she wants... But I'm working on it.

Then a little yellow text comes up saying, "Mayor has made a new demand!"

She wanted a BED in her DINING ROOM. Why? As far as I know, requests are usually for statues or decoration of some sort. Why on earth would a dwarf request a bed in her dining room when she has a perfectly good one in her bedroom? :\

Seems like a bit of a bug to me. ;) A bed bug. Teehee...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Finding a seed from an already generated world
« on: November 29, 2007, 02:23:00 am »
Now, I'm insanely curious about this... As with the updates and whatnot, I would very much like to find a way to discern a seed from an already generated world.

The reason why is that, frankly, I found a fairly pristine area to start off in and build a gargantuan fortress. The problem is that I've heard various things about updates to map generation and whatnot, and I'd like to figure out the seed for this world I have, Bokstrasp, so I can regenerate it with major version changes if there are any, you know... Fixes for bugs I may not have known exist in my area... Say, fixes for gem cluster generation... Magma vent things... What have you...

So, I have a challenge for all you brainy-smarties out there (or people who know how these things work)... Can you find the seed that generated a world? I'll send the world to anyone who thinks they can. Or who just wants to see it. :P I have it all zipped up with an enclosed image to denote a pristine area. The area I'm using. :P

No clue if you actually can find a seed from an already generated world, but it would be nice to have...

[EDIT]
Oh, and the only reason I haven't provided the file right off the bat is mainly because I have nowhere to host it. :P

DF Bug Reports / Flooded floor tiles not always muddy
« on: November 23, 2007, 12:08:00 am »
I have an irrigation system for my farm, like (probably) everyone else...

Except when I flood my fields, every tile doesn't turn muddy. Sometimes up to half of a field (that has 1/7 water on it) fails to muddy.

I have never heard of this being a "feature" so I am led to assume that it's a bug.

DF Bug Reports / Grates, walls, magma, and magma buildings
« on: November 22, 2007, 10:06:00 pm »
Okay, so I have a magma vent with a bunch of magma men, magma imps, and magma snakes... So I am trying to devise a method of funneling magma into my workshops... But without bringing along the baddies... So I thought, "Hey, a grate might work!"

So I dig a channel and plop down a grate but... Lo and behold, you can't put buildings over grates. Now, I honestly think this is a bug. Grates are treated as floor, just allowing for the draining of liquids (or the flooding, as it may be) so this makes little sense to me. I can build a wall on a grate, but not a magma forge so my forge can get to magma safely without having a magma-based baddy pop up and kill my poor dwarves?

Maybe it's a bug that walls can be built on floor grates, too. I dunno. But next thing I'm gonna try will be a channel with grates so the magma gets through, but not the bad stuff. :3 I hope THAT works...

DF Bug Reports / Removal of constructed floor tiles results in falling dw
« on: November 22, 2007, 07:56:00 pm »
I had a setup where I was building a floor over the magma vent so I might be able to seal off the magma creatures in there. Still no idea how to keep the magma baddies out, so I went to wall up the ledge leading out, but apparently you can't build a wall on a floor you've built, so I queued up a section of floor for removal and a dwarf got to work.

First I noticed the dwarf working ON TOP of the floor tile. I figured it was just an oddity... But then the tile was gone. And so was the dwarf. He fell into the magma and died because he was standing on the floor tile he just removed.

Funny, huh? I figure removing floor tiles shouldn't work like that. :P

DF Bug Reports / Migrants stuck on edge of map
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:35:00 pm »
Kay, so I get a message that I have migrants incoming, right? I get all happy and yay, but boo because I soon figure out that... They... aren't moving... They are stuck at the edge of the screen, waiting for who knows what with their "no job" tags. Slackers.

I managed to get ONE to move, but just because he was a craftsdwarf and my craftsdwarf workshop was empty. Now a NEW one is stuck at the edge and I have no clue how to get them to move.

DF Suggestions / Digging implements and steam
« on: November 26, 2007, 08:44:00 pm »
So right now we only have one digging tool. A pick. Any thought about shovels? Steampicks for experienced miners? Dwarves are usually portrayed as machine masters in games and such, so I was thinking that maybe branching out more would be nice. We have steam when water comes in contact with magma, but what if it comes in contact with hot water? Perhaps we can have wood boilers or magma boilers that use either coal/wood fires or the heat of magma to produce steam from an inlet of water. Combined with a brook, this can be a viable way to produce steam without the loss of magma for, say, traps (Hot steam hurts. Seriously. :x )or workshops.

I realize this raises the question of how it would be powered by steam, but honestly as this is a fantasy game... I don't really see how it could be explained in real physics.

Of course, boilers could open up a whole new avenue of innovation. What about dwarven showers? Nobles might want to get clean every once in a while, as dust and grime offends their noble sensibilities or something like that. Steam power could turn turbines and power any number of things. From pumps to automated drills to magma taps... It would open up a previously closed area for us to explore and experiment with.

I'm sure you guys can come up with a bajillion other uses for steam or new digging impements and whatnot.

[EDIT]
Of course, I realize that automation is not necessarily a good thing, and my intent was not to promote the whole "it does it for you" as steam would be, presumably, dangerous and a bit complicated to set up. It's just an idea that I think may have some merit.

DF Suggestions / Mattresses
« on: November 25, 2007, 08:48:00 pm »
So, we can only make beds of wood. Presumably because dwarves sleep right on them, with no mattresses or sheets. What I suggest is to allow all kinds of beds, stone, metal... What have you. Just make them less comfortable (unhappy thoughts? Or less than happy thoughts?) than wood beds.

Also, allow clothier shops to make mattresses, bedspreads, and pillows (three separate objects) out of plant fibers or silks, maybe even out of leather? Perhaps add a new plant like cotton or another plant that can be used to make stuffing for mattresses and pillows... Maybe make mattresses and pillows a two-step creation where you have to make it, then stuff it?

After that, maybe q-select a bed (kind of like a lever) and select "add mattress/pillow/bedspread" or something like that?

It could be a requirement for nobles or just a source of happiness? Perhaps it could let dwarves sleep less?
