They were also REALLY tall and really well built, so they're like the Spartans of Northern Europe

EDIT:
Also, if we did a Norse mod, it should be called (thank you Karkov?/Sarrak? for this in Bloody Age) Norse Fortress

That was me that said that.  I could totally dig that as a mod too, I need to go snooping around in the modding forums more often.

Heh, it'd be funny if you could make it to no matter what options people picked the fortress name would always return with "Valhalla," however it'd probably break the game's naming system.

That and each and every dwarf/norse warrior would be named Valhalla as well.

The solution here is ballistas. Lots and lots of ballistas. And maybe a catapult or two.
Like as many as you can humanly place in one clustered area with one behind the other. And then target shoot at animals and the like.

And Karkov, you recall what happened when we were sieged and horrendously outnumbered by nightwings. We butchered them quite hilariously. And I'm almost done Necrothreat II and I'm currently embarked in volcanic musical chairs, and stuck on an aquifer. As I figure out how to fix that, I'm going to try a hand at this once necrothreat is finished. This is fortress defense mod? I can run both at the same time (I got two separate insatnces of DF, one for vanilla, one for FD (used for Bloody Age mostly).

Yeah but we were dwarfy dwarfs with armor and four legendary warriors.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: How have you been dying recently?

Playing Adventure mode in Masterwork Fortress, running around the countryside as a Jotun.  Used to Vanilla Adventure mode so I'm thinking I'm gonna get Bogeymen at night.

Got swarmed by Dragon Raptors.

EDIT:  Oh, here's another fun one, started in a random ocean.  This is fine, I've got two points into swimmer, I'll just make it to shore.

The ocean froze on me.

Tbh the intent of the poll was to ask for preferences for successors to this game. I fully intend to make a Bridgedstreams II at some point. Even if there are no streams to bridge or extinctions to reverse.

As for the current fort, I doubt we'll get beyond reaching the election of a Mayor. We may get a long time before sieges occur but by then our wealth will have been generated so high we'll be outnumbered something like 10 to 1 in each fight.
That was something we were running into in the "Bloody Age of Artifice," or whatever the long name was of our fort.  We ended up shoving two dwarves into a broom closet or something and having them mingle enough to where they finally married and started producing kids.

However, even with only 18 dwarves at the time, we did get sieges.  The whole Fortress Defense mod makes sieges happen whenever they want to practically.  Except for Goblin sieges, those still happen when they're supposed to.

Fortunately monopolies aren't supported in the RAWs yet. If they ever are then anyone that enables them will be subject to the whims of nobles and those who befriend the king.
I still like the feudal idea.

Just section off parts of the town and have the guards patrol them every now and then to keep the people happy and in line
The only thing I can see wrong with this is that we have a rather limited amount of units to use/throw at a wall.  If we had proper migrant waves, I could maybe see doing this.  As is, I can see large families securing crafts for themselves and such, but not so much a feudal era kind of thing going on.

Though it definitely would be interesting if that became a thing later.  Have Grim as the High-King or some such, since he was the one who founded the settlement, and have his line carry the high-king title.  All of the other 7 starting units become vassals and switch around governance depending on who is leading the fort at the time.

EDIT:  Accidentally quoted the wrong thing, whoops.

Karkov, you traitor! Going to other fortresses I see :P

So any word from the next guy?
I'm just waiting on you to break the hiatus on that fort :P

EDIT: I should probably have been clearer about which list I meant in my last post. We have the turn list and the dorfing list after all and I refer to both as 'the list'...

It's alright, I was just making sure I didn't take up a turn that would probably end up with most of us maimed or dead (That and I would either forget it was my turn or wouldn't have the time).

We're currently waiting on the person who signed up for the current turn but I'll add you both to the list.
To be humanized, would be nice.  I lack a lot of creativity in fort creation and would probably end up consigning all of us to death.

"We definitely need this magma reservoir!"

"I don't think that's such a good id-"

"Nonsense!  The dwarves do it all the time, what could possibly go wrong?"

-Your fortress has been abandoned.-

Oooh, another fortress with no governing kingdom?  I can dig it.  There any humans left for me to nab?

Sorry highMax, I didn't reply about who I wanted to be. Is one of Karlow's children available? Also, damn HighMax, I mean it when I say your the most badass DF player I've ever seen! Your freaking taking out entire armies with four soldiers only? I don't know if I'll ever be good as you! Especially under the influence of the Fortress Defense mod. It's just heart takingly badass!  :'(

This Karlow, I have no idea about.  Karkov however. :P  Yeah there's a couple of my children running around without being taken.  I'm sure Highmax can set you up with one.

Sorry about not being here too much guys, I usually do all of my dorf stuff while I'm at work and it's been super busy lately (That and I've been possessed by a couple of books recently).

1255
Karkov, I think Sarrak breaks a record with 86 kills?
Well, Sarrak definitely broke the high score of that old Colossus that had been running around, congrats Sarrak!

Huzzah for progenies!  Whoo!  I think the fortress is on the up and up.  It's all been going pretty smoothly except for the fact that Jotun throw fireballs (didn't think that was a thing, holy crap.)

1256
I've noticed we've been taking a lot more of the Norse mythos into our fortress than most others do; one thing keeps popping into my head because of this:

Norse Fortress.

Looked a bit like this?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yah - not actually dwarvish at all, but it's easy to see how you could have missed that from the cover.

I've always kind of assumed that dwarf books had leather covers, mainly because it's the easiest material to find.  It's probably feasible that I just mistook wolf leather for dorf/human leather.

You're playing Fort Defense though, and those sieges show up whenever they damned well please.

20ish dwarves actually. If you hit that before the 1st winter they can attack as soon as then from that point onward.
So when Karkov's wife gave birth to the 20th dwarf, they all showed up?
That sounded like an ancient curse.

Well crap.  Good to know that my blood-line has probably doomed us all.

I think you delved too deeply into your histories...
"So you're saying that the last book I read wasn't the "History of the Mountain Home," it was something called the Necro- what was it again?"

"Necronomicon.  A book full of incantations and spells written by demons about every black magic known to mortals and immortals alike."

"Huh, well that probably explains why it wasn't in dwarfish."

Not gonna lie, I would like to take a swing at them in a copy of the save, but from a community game standpoint... Yeah, I'd prefer us not being stomped through the dirt, clay, sand, aquifers, and into the bedrock.
I was hoping they'd show up MUCH later. Isn't the specifications of them that they show up after x amount of dwarves show up? Like x being 120?

In vanilla Dorf Fort sieges show up only after you get 80 dwarfs.  You're playing Fort Defense though, and those sieges show up whenever they damned well please.

I vote for staying inside, maybe a save-scum attempt at taking on the Jotun.
