Life Advice / Re: The Generic Computer Advice Thread

Cable might not be available for a multitude of reasons.  Down where I live we have "Historical buildings" where building code actually denies people from making the changes to the building necessary to add in the infrastructure wiring (drilling holes everywhere).  It might just be that your landlord doesn't want a bunch of people coming in, tearing down walls and chasing cable throughout the building.  I'd talk with your landlord about it and find out why cable isn't available.

On the distance away from the hub thing, ISP's will put relay stations and things wherever they can, if they can't get to the center of the city (because real estate prices are usually their highest there), then they'll put them anywhere else they can and be done with it.  Then again that doesn't really make sense with DSL because you should be getting the full speed anyway.

This is why you check inside the cover, Karkov ;)
Usually has a list of the series' books.

You would think that, I normally think that too.  Checked the back and the front, missed the 5 point font that said "Eighth book of the Runelords" because it was hidden in the foreword or something.  There wasn't a list in my copy oddly enough.  And they decided the back was for fifteen reviews and about a three sentence paragraph instead of its prequels.

Oh well, hopefully it's a good series and I'll get to that book eventually.

This. Also look for something along the lines of "A [character name] novel", which is usually a good indication that the novel in question is a sequel to something.

This is sort of what tipped me off.  The summary on the back (which I normally don't read with new series because I like not knowing what's ahead) had something about "Based around two of his famous characters!" on it that I barely noticed in a glance.  Confused, this ended up in me searching through the book whilst in the middle drive-thru of a McDonalds, wondering what the hell I just bought.

XCOM is the god of screwing you over due to chance.  Continue at it is all I can say, and hope to god you get recruits with better aim over time.

Also get Mechs so you can falcon punch everything.  That's really the only option.

Happy Cakeday, Taw.

Damn, Mastah's rage is waaaaay more justified than my own rage.

All I did was buy the eighth and second book in a series instead of the first because the people who stuck labels on them covered up "Eighth book in the series."

My condolences, man.

I have a feeling that the only ones who are truly ready and don't have utter crap procedures are the big name hospitals, the university hospitals, and research hospitals.
I'm going to agree with that statement.  The tinier hospitals probably had to adhere to some standard that was set for Ebola, but didn't have the necessary resources to totally comply with them (or were overly greedy or skeptic it would ever spread across the ocean), so opted for enough to not get sued for compliance issues but aren't actually ready for a major crisis.

False positives are such a glorious thing, though!

AAAAND all my files got encrypted by a virus and I'm probably going to get ransomed for them.

FUUUUUUUCKK!!!
Paying them is risky.  They might or might not unlock it.  Talk to the guys at https://www.us-cert.gov/ , they should be able to help you.  They found the key for the original Cryptolocker Trojan, this might not be the same but they can at least give it a shot.

(Also they report cyber security alerts and will send you stuff along that line in the mail.  They're good to follow for some extra paranoia in your life)

I hope mod makers get on it pretty quick, a harmless mod adding a couple of traits now crashes my game every time I try to boot with it.  I get far enough every time to choose my starting time and as soon as it is supposed to show the recommended starts it just instantly crashes.

Rather annoying, really.  I never even play as those characters.  I always make a character and grab a county somewhere and see how far I can get.

Except that doesn't work because he meets with a ranger deserter that he let escape while he was still a captain.  Helps the deserter escape from Mordor.  Would've been a good theory otherwise.

So does life itself, but you don't see people petitioning that.

This is me being dumb.  I'm going to edit my post to show me being dumb.  Ignore me and let me be dumb in peace.  How the hell did I get convinced that he was still alive somehow?  HE WAS BORN IN 1892 FFFFFFFFF.

EDIT: Okay, I think I understand how I mixed it up.  "Developers are working to keep the game true to Tolkein's world," probably missed its full mark (or any other combination made heretofore) and I read it as "They're working WITH Tolkein" or some such nonsense.  When most of them read "They're working with the thought of Tolkein's story in mind."

Add that to speed-reading most things along with very small dyslexic tendencies, and suddenly Tolkein's alive from the 1890's and wants video games to match his world, making small artistic inventions along the way.

Cigarettes and drugs are censored on TVs in Thailand, so it's hard to tell if the guy is smoking or if he's sucking a penis.
I've seen that in a couple of animes.  Someone lights up a cigarette and then suddenly a giant censor blots out half of the screen.  Most notably happened in Jojo's if I remember right.

Actually he is a ranger of Gondor stationed at the Black Gate.  There were outcasts who lived within Mordor who took one of the rangers into their fold because he married one of them and taught them how to wage war, but that was not Talion.  Talion killed a noble back in Gondor and took his wife, whom was pregnant with his child, with him to the Black Gate because Talion's father-in-law was nobility himself and cared for his daughter.

From the snippets I've gathered, Talion's father-in-law was actually supposed to be the one to go the Black Gate himself, but extenuating circumstances (murdering nobles) made him send Talion in his stead.  Which is how Talion ended up a Captain.  Game could do with a prequel so we could understand where we're at better.
