It might be falling branches, which also might be the cause of the collapse on the surface messages.

So it looks like all underground crops can be planted in all seasons which is nifty.
I'm having trouble remembering what I've forgotten and what's just new...

I'm just coming back from having quit a couple months ago.
My new fort is called Murdertool. I had planned for this to be a relatively peaceful fort to help me get back into things but evidently not.

On that day there won't be any no item embarks. You're not supposed to go that far down the challenge rabbit hole.  :P

People do no item embarks on most biomes and embark with a single pick on terrifying glaciers.

The day when dwarves will learn to use tactics will be a horrible day for goblins.
Oh god yes. It's not too smart that one of my hammerdorfs decides it's a damn good idea to charge a squad of goblin bowmen along with a squad of goblin axemen, without the rest of my squad.

The day when exploits are done away with is my day for celebration. MAY THE DANGER TRAINING ROOMS DIE FOREVER.

If I remember the toady mythos correctly, dwarves are getting the ability to fear in the next big patch which is coming... some time in december or january I guess.

Attempted to reclaim zombie-infested fortress.
That was a failure.
I'd feel kinda bad about modifying embark so that I could take full steel, but it seems kinda necessary.

So ever since a caravan arrived, I've been having seemingly invisible necromancers laying siege to my fort. I can't find them on the map. They appear in the combat log.
I have "found" two: they decided to attack (hand to hand) a dwarf. Strangely, one of these times the attack happened 3 z-levels underground in my storehouse. Even though I'd had almost constant movement around that area.

One of the repeatedly resurrected hands has a name now. I don't really know what to do. I thought necromancers needed LoS to resurrect units.
okay and now there's a named skeleton as well.

On the upside, I have a macedwarf with 5 names. He has 55 total kills.

And bad news:
41 undead units. Right as the caravans come...

I abandoned that fortress.
The weird thing was that the siege was never actually declared, I don't think.

You put a chest in the hospital, that's what's going on. There's some bug which causes dwarves to assign all of the cloth/thread they can get their hands on to the hospital, which leaves none for your clothing industry. They'll also steal all your adamantine threads before they can be forged into wafers.

Yes but the issue is that they're stealing from a caravan.
Like they ran out to the caravans while they were coming in and just systematically stole every bit of cloth on them.

11
So something kinda bizarre just happened.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I think my entire fortress just started raiding the caravan which just arrived of hospital supplies.

It looks like they're all carrying thread, cloth, or what-have-you.
I don't know what the hell happened here.
Oh, it looks like they lifted approximately 1,800,000 units of cloth.
So that seems to be... about 180 pieces of cloth. All fitting into one chest by the way, which I find retarded and hilarious.
What the fuck is going on here.

12
Why the hell can I not build fortifications or walls on a constructed floor?
this is stupid.

Well they can't shoot through there and hit a dwarf, which is I assume what you're asking about.

They can if they're elite marksmen/bowmen though, so don't use fortifications as a panacea.

You know, it's posts like these that make me think those goblin snatchers are doing the kids a favor.
Well, have you looked at the snatcher messages?

To save you time, here they are straight from snatcher_profession.txt ....

I rescue lost children and bring them back to [CONTEXT:PLACE:TRANS_NAME].

So yes, given some of the 'child care' being attempted here, I could see the children being rescued...

Very apt. And i thought the thoughts of snatched children were just a bit of serendipity.

If there are still living relatives of an abducted child in your fort, you can look through their relations, select the goblinised child and take a look at its thoughts. Since the game, in order to properly unload the units, takes the child out of the snatcher's bag upon reaching the map border, the child invariably gets the "is happy to be free" thought. Of course, this is _also_ a good description to how a child would feel after being removed from a fort were children are commonly subjected to "... child care" or !!science!!.

it's not our fault that children are patently useless for more than a decade... I could have room for another cheesemaker or beekeeper without them.

[INTELLIGENT] gives them [CAN_LEARN] automatically.
can you give [CAN_LEARN] without [INTELLIGENT] though?
