I can't recall ever having had a Fell Mood. I keep misreading Fey for Fell and hoping that my dwarf will kill someone.

Non-FB megabeasts die waaay too easy. In my current fort I sort of forgot about setting up defenses or my military (was trying new things with water and machinery), and so by year 5 or so I only had a single squad of poorly-trained, unarmored wrestlers. I was starting to crank out some weapons and armor for them, but then a !!CYCLOPS!! shows up well before I'm ready for it - or so I thought.

Long story short, I sent out my squad of misfits and they beat the thing to death with their bare hands. Only two losses - one that dodged into a river and drowned, and one that got ambushed by a giant tick while chasing the fleeing cyclops. The tick was much nastier than the megabeast (though the others did come back and beat the tick to death after they were done with the cyclops).

Methinks I'm going to add some NATURAL_SKILLs to all the megabeasts now. That was just silly.  :D

yeah i've got to agree that they just don't do that much. even titans aren't all that scary if they're not made out of steel or something crazy AND have something syndrome-inducing. forgotten beasts can be scary simply by virtue of the fact that they come out of what seems to be nowhere; titans show up on the edge of the map and you have a decent amount of time to prepare your fortress and mobilize military. you lack that with forgotten beasts. werebeasts aren't bad either unless they show up in the middle of your fishing operation and bite a bunch of people. usually I only get one or two bites.

oh hey, so apparently trying to channel out a staircase that leads into water from the bottom totally doesn't work

hasta la vista, miners 2 and 3. :(

was trying to make a well tube to the third cavern which was in a convenient location vertically. usually don't do that because I like embarking with aquifers.

oh also this is a bit odd, my seasons seem to be abnormal this game. I'm embarked fairly close to what we've established as the equator and I've got dry season and wet season as well as summer arriving "on the calendar". I haven't embarked in a location like this before so I dunno if that's what usually happens or what.

well either I missed the second caverns or I just got incredibly lucky because I found the great magma sea, two lava pools, and a Curious Structure on level -64.

well I almost lost a mountain bastion to:
a titan
a snowstorm
an alcohol shortage
all my water supply freezing
underground shenanigans in the caverns
a goblin siege

all within a month or two of each other. That was a hard tantrum spiral to avoid. I went from a little over 80 dwarves to under 40 dwarves in that time period. I lost most of my core workers (both my legendary miners, legendary carpenter, legendary mason, legendary engraver, legendary armorsmith, legendary weaponsmith, maybe a few more)
then once I recovered I finally realized who my vampire was
it's my mayor

thats it I'm done with this fort.

You might get a layer with better chances of iron and theres always goblinite.

Anyways, shortly after that previous FB (whose syndrome so far is only giving sleepyness), I get a 3 eyed iguanadont with a poisonous sting. I bet its stinger(s) are on its thumb(s). It's on the other side of the cavern lake in layer one, so it doesn't pose an immediate threat and since my military has already been alerted....

Edit:
NEVER MIND GUYS I FOUND A TON OF MAGNETITE
I LOVE YOU TOADY

Sedimentary layers often contain tons of magnetite. :)

yeah I was just super buttmad because I was getting none of it. I was gonna /ff that fortress out of rage.

to be fair that's why I use scout tunnels before I make big constructions.

...
erm why not slaughter it?
thats what I do with all the spare animals that show up. mmmmmmmm, meat...
just wish I could slaughter immigrants
...

It's a my little pony mod, where you play ponies. You can't get vampire livestock, or ponies for that matter (just horses/foals, donkeys/foals, and mules for equines), in vanilla.

ah my bad
I was a bit confused. I haven't seen more than one or two vampires before and I just put them in a burrow and pumped some magma into it when I found them. me no likey vampires.

I find that when in mountains I like going very deep and generally doing a skinny, tall fortress on 10-15 z-levels. However, when in aquifer maps I tend towards very shallow wide fortresses. I do find that it's optimal to put bedrooms in stone layers when possible because you can smooth and engrave the already existing stone rather than having to build walls.

loyalty cascade.

5 DWARFBUCKS TO THIS GOOD MAN!

And it wasn't just a loyalty cascade. It was a full on Failcannon. We should make that a verb for when someone pulls a massive loyalty cascade.

erm why not slaughter it?

yeah that doesn't sound good does it

Dear Urist McFisherdwarf,

I know the mussels you keep catching in the brook are of the utmost importance to this outpost's survival, but next time invaders attack to slaughter our animals and rape our women (or men if the invaders are elves) please come inside and do not go outside if I give the alarm to go back inside. I already passed a not to Urist McUselessPeasant who, if you remember, went outside during the last siege, walked around a bit and headed back inside again. Please refrain from doing any of this.

Yours truly,
Urist McMayor

we have burrows for that. just designate the entirety of your fortress that's safe as a burrow and put it on an alarm system along with setting your militia on alert.

« on: September 16, 2013, 12:43:59 pm »
first winter I didn't have a still set up and the river froze over

I technically survived until the winter finished but the tantrum spiral had already started when spring broke and I was done for.

confession time: ive actually never made it past the second caverns. I keep doing fun things like trying to drain an aquifer into the first caverns without properly walling off my staircase that goes through the caverns
also fuck metamorphic intrusive rock.
