I just found out that the canadian dollar is worth about 9x as much as the Indonesian Rupia. Im wondering if its worth buying a nice laptop while Im in indonesia, considering that when I get back to Canada, it will have to be plugged into an electric converter permanantly.

It shouldn't give to much problems, provided you have a good electric connector and don't forget it all over the place. Or you can just buy a Canadian Charger. Should work if you watch out to get the right one.

A lot of laptops have unrestricted voltage. My dad's can handle 100~240V, so he just needs a plug gender and he's set to go.

Maybe. It depends on how lucky you are with the laptop and converter, really. I've used cheap converters for six months at a time with no problems, but I've also seen a few that managed to blow up the power systems of the TV's they were hooked up to.

However, in my experience, like Skyrunner, most laptop power cords'll handle any amount of power you feed 'em.

Laptop power supplies tend to be dual mode and switch automatically based on the voltage you feed it. Most likely you'll only need a plug adapter. Just check the specs of the laptop or the label on the power supply. If it says 100-240V and 50-60Hz you're home free.

1: Make sure that indoneasian laptops don't cost ten times as many indonesian dollars as canadian dollars.

2: I have found that laptops in particular will draw more total wattage than power converters expect. You will need to unplug the thing and let it cool and reset periodically.

Yeah, I'm not so sure how this will work out. I bought my laptop in USA because it cost half as much as I'd pay for it in Bosnia.
