The next thing i expect from you would be a encasing device, firing magma and water over long distances. That would be totally awesome. Killing invaders with magma, cave-ins and by encasing simultaneously.

EDIT: I think I am really going to try in the next release.  :)

Recomendations for possible improvement:
Build walls off of each of the corners
Add a trench connecting each wall with its neighbors.  Add a bridge so the trip is gauranteed one way.

With this, when you pull the lever, the lava will only impact one cardinal direction, guarantee kill, and then flow into the trench for reclaimation. At the same time allowing a second group to be lured into a different cardinal direction.

All this talk about magma and water gave me an idea for a megaproject:

1. First construct a floor, 2 z-levels above ground level, or higher. The floor should cover the entire map, in other words, it should block the sky. Use magma-safe materials.
2. Now construct a similar floor 1 z-level above the floor level you just constructed. Magma-safe materials preferred but not necessary.
3. Turn those levels into pools. They must be able to contain liquids, i.e. water or magma.
4. Construct hatches on each level. Say, one for every 5 tiles. Make sure the hatches align on vertical axis (z-axis).
5. Connect each floor's hatches to a lever. That is, one single lever to control each floor's hatches.
6. Fill floor #1 with magma.
7. Fill floor #2 with water.
8. Or do it the other way around! Just remember to use the magma-safe construction materials.
9. When under an invasion or a siege, in two glorious but moves, first release all the magma, and shortly after that, the water.
10. Enjoy your lifetime supply of obsidian as well as the cleansed terrain.

I see the doorstop, but where's the doorbell? ...Where's the door?

They go up the stairs and down a long staircase in the lower-right corner

Now i've cleanedup my gleegasm i will incorporate this design into my fort. Maybe locate it atop my fort and make it so opening the vents cloaks my fort in impenetrable molten fire.

If you want high pressure magma you need to suspend multiple levels of pumpstack underneath your magma reservoir, at least that's what i read in a few threads.

And the entire setup must be ABOVE the highest outlet.  Have fun engineering that!

Someone said something about this weapon being rather inaccurate.  I'd like to refute those claims with this;

The controlled brushfire of DEATH.

As you'd expect, lava can and will often kick off a fire that burns across the map.  That wildfire is a secondary part of the Doorstop.

In this case, the goblin siege thought they had escaped by cowering in the upper-right corner of the map

As you can see in this next picture, that upper group isn't doing too well after the fire hits them
Spoiler:  MUHAHAAHAHAHAHA (click to show/hide)

The group of marksgoblins sat around after watching their cohorts burn to death or flee and simply let the firewall hit them.

And so, with a siege of goblins dead via me manipulating the forces of nature, I leave you with this peaceful, corpse-filled scene

I built my current fort on a volcano.
The entrance leads above the mouth and can be sunken into the hot death. :)
For fun I built a neat magma moat around my overground fort, which is filled by a system like your Doorstop.
If I pump more I can flood the plateau, but at the moment there is my cowfarm... hmmm BBQ :)

Made a slight update to the front page.  Turns out the dwarves won't pull the Levers-O'-!!FUN!! if they can see goblins through the fortifications.  It's actually what lead to the little firewall incident I just showed

You have a problem: the northern side of the river doesn't burn. Fix it.

Nope.  I use the river for water and leave it unconnected because it keeps stuff from spawning over there.  Because of where it is, if I did let the magma reach it (or put a magma weapon of some sort there)  It would probably obsidianize on the map edge, utterly wrecking the river.

That poor, poor planter.

Also, flooring over the river would work.

A floor over the river, then giving the floor a mudlayer to grow grass on? Fire could spread without magma reaching the area.

Nope - Cant build within 4 (or thereabouts) squares of the map edge
