Nerves don't heal though.  I guess not even bruising?
The spine doesn't heal. I think that peripheral nerves can. They certainly can in real life.

Spinal cord injuries can heal, but often don't. Complete transection of the spinal cord won't heal, but a bruise may despite initially causing spinal shock (transient loss of function). On the other hand even a bruise might cause permanent loss of function. Peripheral nerves can heal, can not heal, and can get worse causing devastating conditions like neuromas and CRPS which trap the patient in pain.

I'd suggest a more complete simulation of nervous tissue injuries, as well as a (maybe hidden) "luck" stat that would determine chance of permanent damage so you could have one dwarf who always lucks out and one dwarf who always has the worst thing happen, so that indestructible heroes would be more common, but the suggestions forum with its lists of already suggested things and angry posters is too confusing.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

Agreed, the way nerves are handled could stand some improvement.  Like everything else in DF, it's one step at a time.  I'm still waiting for rotting stomachs and pancreases to be fatal.  :)

If nothing else, bruised nervous tissue probably should heal reliably.  I'm not a doctor, but the little I do know indicates that it's generally actually cutting the nerves that's bad.

Yes and no. Yes, cutting the nerves is bad. It's generally a one-way street. But bruises can cause permanent damage to the spine, depending on various factors - as with nearly any injury.

Sufficient nerve compression can cause permanent damage, kinda like squishing a length of play-do in half.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.
