The Space Race: Forum game(6/8 Players) Turn 24: 1969-1970
« on: February 08, 2012, 12:08:45 pm »

9 August 1945:

In a bright flash of light the Japanese city of Nagasaki is annihilated, killing almost 40.000 people and ending the second World war. At the Western front the war had been decided earlier, but now the time had come to divide the spoils of war and to rebuild. Agreements were made to prevent a war on this scale from ever happening again. The german scientist teams were broken up, and the knowledge of rocketry was spread around the world. The V-2 had been a terrible weapon: mostly silent, unstoppable once launched and armed with almost a ton of explosives. But now the time had come to use this knowledge for the benefit of mankind, to learn new things and to ensure peace and prosperity around the world.

1 January 1946:

You have been appointed leader of the national space program. For now you have a tight budget and almost no facilities but that will soon change, as your prestige and honor raises with your succeses. However similair organisations have arisen around the globe. For now it's just a friendly competition, but it might soon turn into a dangerous and fast arms race.

Do fuel tanks weigh anything?

Brief recent national history: China was hit hard by both the Japanese and their own civil war. Perhaps in another reality, they would still be fighting. Here, the Nationalists refused to cooperate with the Communists (Despite their attempts for a temporary truce) against the invading Japanese. The Japanese used this for a propaganda campaign, and would ultimately make more gains in China than they otherwise might have. This had little real impact on the grand scale, but people were outraged at the Nationalists, who were quickly beaten back to Taiwan. Thanks to extensive Russian aid, China's economy is rapidly recovering.

Xin Su worked for one of Mao's underlings. His organizational talents were helpful during the war. When the news of German rocketry teams being spread reached him, he managed to get an audience with Mao. After weeks of negotiation, Mao was finally convinced to invest in a space program lead by Xin Su. He would both prove that a Communist space program could beat (or at the very least, rival) the likely Capitalist space programs, and extract extraterrestrial resources for a growing China if he valued his life.

The site is surrounded by mountains, and located in the Anhui province, in the south-east of China. The primary access is by rail. The labs, factory, and mission control building are clustered together on the outskirts of Shijie Town, while the launchpad is in a field a mile away.

Fuel tanks don't weight anything, but the fuel does. Assume 1 liter= 1 kg for basic rocket fuel. Also, when designing you don't have to match exact values(Ie you can use a fuel tank of 100 litres instead of a 125 one).

Your german engineer will give you a +25 designing bonus on the project he's working on. Please add that.

Special:  A German research scientist yielded a clever design upgrade to internal combustion engines.  Not useful for rocketry, but the design was patented and the royalties from it provide a modest extra income.

Scotland's fate was necessarily tied to that of the whole UK during WWII.  After coming off its prewar economic crisis, the future looked bleak... until the founding of the DeWard Astronomy Research Foundation by Hugh DeWard.  DeWard saw a future of Scotland as a haven for high technology and what it could do for the world.  His famed "Reach for the Skies" speech secured his governmental funding and attracted many brilliant minds from the whole of Europe, including some German expatriates.  His sudden death on December 12th, 1945 was a blow to the Foundation's aims, but it is believed that his right hand man, Urist McLowe, will be able to live up to the ideals of its founder.

Spain had owed a fair bit to Germany, as they had provided military and financial support to General Franco during his Coup in 1936. Spain as a whole was quite happy to stop paying Germany back in Money and Volunteer soldiers once the tides had turned. Freed of the debt, Alexis Solsona saw the opportunity to hack a piece out of the German dismembered missile programme. On gaining an audience with the Generalissimo, she persuaded him to put a small amount of the resources that would have gone to the German's into a Spanish Space Programme, in order to keep up with the other major powers.

Alexis had inherited her fathers company 'Ciencia, Tecnología y Investigación' and, on seeing other successful programmes, remodelled the Company, taking an English name (Easier for those American's to get their heads around) and highlighting it's new focus, the STARS.

The facilities themselves are nestled into the Pyrenees, with the Launchpad a five minute ride to the south. It is fairly remote, but easily accessible.

@Toaster : Your design will net you an extra 1000 of passive funding(can't lose these)

@Kashyk: Your scientist will give a +40 to any thruster research you asign him to. People can however only do one thing per turn.
Also Google translate told me your motto is :We Infinity and Beyond. Care to give a better translation?

It should be We go to Infinity and Beyond, I may possibly have missed a word however. Spanish isn't my first language.

Works for me.
For comparison, a bussinesman archetype gives 20% extra funding

@Ghazkull: Please specify which blueprints you managed to hide. I'll give you 2 .Just name them, like Medium booster or Small sattelite and I'll come up with stats. You can give me some stats(Like wheight = X, but I need enough room to balance things)

Also, to anyone: In the future, when researching components/ designing things, please give them a name. This is to prevent we get things like: Slightly smaller than medium but more efficient then normal liquid fuel booster.

What would be possible as blueprints? Will we be able to colonize a planet near endgame?

Would be a Nuclear Reactor and Fission Engines be possible?

Late game, but not know. You're nowhere near manned spaceflight at the moment. You're current posibilities are some simple kind of payload, an advancement of one of your current things, some alternate fuel( Solid fuel is the only thing I can think of at the moment) or something conpletely different.

For all players: Trading is permitted

Does it have any costs? If not, this could easily devolve into two teams.

Trades can be intercepted, there are shipping costs, There's the risk of reverse engineering.
Also, trade embargoes and possible reduction of prestige.

I'm writing up rules now.
