I can't bring myself to start a new fort for new version...
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:42:49 pm »

Maybe I am very sentimental but I started my first fort with version 0.31.25 and now I can't bring myself to upgrade because I can't seem to keep my old fort (I tried copying the save folder but it didn't work).

I know the newer version contains a good deal of bug fixes plus zombies and vampires, but I'm too attached to my old fort to throw it away. I've put at least 60 hours into it so far and I can't bring myself to start a new by throwing away all my dorf companions.

Does anyone else feel that way? Or am I crazy.

After dozens and dozens of releases....

No. Not really.

It's trivial to have two copies of DF around.  I'd suggest you just do that.

Indeed, just upload the new version and never click on the wrong folder. Then, you can try out genning a world in the currant one while keeping your old one safe and secure.

I always delete my fortress after every release version.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

I still have 0.28.181.40d on my hard drive, and the first fort I ever played saved.

DF itself takes up a trivial amount of disk space (it's the saves that bloat it up), so no particular worries about keeping the old versions.

The same, except I have my .23a fort, .40d fort and 31.25 current fort. I haven't yet embarked on .34.x but I have genned a world and looked through the legends.
