Where do mummies go once they kill my adventurer?

So I've done some tomb raiding, and I noticed that once I have been killed by a mummy it will disappear, along with all of its pet corpses.  I can come back with another adventurer and loot everything and I only need to worry about traps.

Is this intended?

After killing you, it feels bad about what it did and decides to punish itself, but ceasing to exist.

Hmm, I always thought that my adventurer, in his dying breaths, cursed the mummies to another dimension.
