I can confirm that vampires do not attack and are not being attacked by undead/zombies in fort mode, I was tracking down a vampire that was killing dwarfs in my fort - starting with my broker and then a baby....a necromancer showed up and raised an army of the dead - I tried shutting the entrance of my fort but due to a accident the doors jammed and the undead poured in, they killed everybody except 1 dwarf - she does not attack the undead and they leave her alone, currently she is the sole survivor[game is not ending] and she is tanning hides while there are hordes of undead right next to her, V checking her I can see that she has 4 kids/husband who are all dead and is a former member of a insane amount of civilizations.

This is probably the best way to check if certain dwarfs are vampires or not - throw them in to a undead pit..if they are being attacked then they are not vampires :)
Checking Dwarf Therapist she really does have a different name then whats ingame - also she is novice UNKNOWN 500/1100

Vampires have a long history of memberships.
Mine here was a member in about 20 Dwarfen Groups :)

She also has 16(!!) Vampire? Children.
And she was cursed by her deity in the year 61 of 252.

My way to get rid of them?
Assign a job with stockpile around workshop.
Wall in! :)

Don't worry man, I'm sure someone will add vampire detecting abilities to a dwarf management utility.  Otherwise, we'll actually have to learn to manage the issue, and maybe Toady will give us more tools to do so.
I can easily do without the bloodsuckers. Ever thought of the people who don't use "dwarf management utilities"?
Vampires are just an unnecessary annoyance. With all due respect to Toady One, I consider this idea a waste of time. There are so many things in the game that could do with some improvement - and he made vampires more or less as common as muck.

'Unknown' might be military tactics or some other skill that nobody cares about. It's independent of vampire status.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

You can always just turn them off.

Talking about turn offs, I just realized a dwarf vampire must be the absolute antithesis of the popular androgyne, metrosexual image of vampires in films and other media.  :P

I wonder, what would they do if someone killed their king.
Inevitable, who cares. Now an onion...

Just fixed that for you ;)

I'm on 136 dwarves now, second elven caravan, haven't had a siege yet but several kobold and goblin thieves, DwarfTherapist sync'd with the game and is showing all the dwarves again... yet I still haven't had a single vampire attack....

maybe I don't have any vampires at all?
do vampires show up on all the biomes? I'm in a good one...
Do I have vampires but they don't dare to strike?? I haven't built bedrooms yet, just some beds for a few dwarves in the middle of the transited hallway... maybe is that?
I am getting vampires but they get healed by the good biome? or some other thing??
I have vampires but they are drinking my blood barrels?? has this been confirmed??
I have vampires but they are non-lethally drinking my dwarves? how do you notice this??

They should show up in all biomes, but if your civilization has no vamps, you get no vamps. They are preexisting historical figures.
They feed on sleeping dwarves, and I'm almost certain they will give a dirt nap to one napping on dirt, though I've yet to see it happen.
Don't think they'll feed from bolld barrels, though no real !!Science!! has been done on this, at least not that I've seen..
So see if they are non-lethally feeding, occasionally go z->health and look for Pale dwarves, if the dwarf has no other injuries, he has been fed on.

It was a dark Timber night.  The moon was low, and ragged, sinister clouds sprawled across the sky.  Everyone in the fortress was on edge.  One person had already been found dead in mysterious circumstances, drained of blood, and all knew another such murder was inevitable.

Alath Nazomzol the gem cutter was on her way to her workshop, when she turned a corner and came face to face with a scene of horror.

A young child, Zefon Konosbothon was slumped, pale and lifeless on the floor.  Ónul Bereshon was standing over the corpse, a thin stream of blood running over her lips and down her chin.

"What the..." Nazomzol murmered, in shock.

Bereshon froze for a moment, and then pointed.  "It was that calf that did it!  I saw it!"

Yes, that's right, my resident vampire has just claimed another victim.  And blamed a stray cow calf for it.

So the thing I was wondering was: could an animal contract vampirism, or is this just the worst (or most audacious) attempt to pass the blame ever?

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

Nah, vampires are not just an annoyance, they are what push the game towards greater complexity. Now the framework for thievery, murder and criminal dwarves is possible. Soon we´ll have angry dwarves murdering their grudges in secret, instead of just throwing chairs.

after 3 military vamps, I got a non military vamp. I'd have to get out a calculator, but I think what it is is that vamps comes with a huge amount of experience. Sometimes that's concentrated in a few military skills, other times it's spread out across like 10 professions and several military skills like vamp #4. I thought he was odd having like 2 levels in 10 different jobs. But after all the military guys I didn't think he was a vampire until he killed a brewer.

Luckily he had spear level 3, so he's in the vamp squad.

Actually, vampires have been sex symbols since Stroker wrote about them, at least, if not before.

He was 62, the other vamp was 84 with military focus
my point was, all of the vampires have shown up with massive amounts of experience. In the case of the first 3, it was concentrated on military skills, dodger, shield user, armor user,  a weapon  level 11 all of them, 12,500 experience each, plus a little other misc stuff.

This guy showed up and instead of having the huge military skills, he had what seems to be a similar amount of experience spread out over several professions.

I think the dead give away for the vamps is the amount of experience they show up with.
