rel4 Newbie's guide?

I began learning to play DF a few months ago (stopped when my life got a bit too hectic), but I'd like to continue to learn. I really only know enough to survive the first year or so, nothing about building a fortress or making weapons or anything. Is the old guide still mostly valid?

Also, if anyone wants to just give an offhand tip (maybe something you messed up the first time you played a real game), I would appreciate any help.

The new version is similar enough to the DF2010 version that has a guide written for it.

There are some subtle changes but nothing really drastic. Just don't embark on evil regions in the new version.

If you're trying to avoid dangers in the new version, it's also a good idea to embark away from a tower (which is listed like a civilization race in the embark menu).
