No meat on Giant Mosquitos?
« on: February 17, 2012, 04:58:00 pm »

My hunter's been bringing down Giant Mosquitos all through Spring, but when they die all they leave behind is chitin. I guess there isn't much meat on an oversized blood-sucking insect?

Well... it's still an insect... not really possible, given the fact that insects don't have lungs, they have tracheae instead, which wouldn't function in a larger form at all. But still, insects don't really have "meat"... though some are edible. If you're cool with that kind of thing.

I'm pretty sure they're meat-y. In that, I've had butchers working on a bunch of them and we ended up with meat.

I'd expect their abdomen has some fleshiness, and their brain (Seriously Deons mod has ant brain/fly brain/butterfly brain roasts, never mind giant). You could boil them up and suck the organo-hydraulic fluid that they move their limbs with too...or use them as horrible living lawn darts/ballista bolts.

Hypothetical thought: Can a dwarven surgeon use a dead giant mosquito as an IV solution? Just stick it in and squeeze the abdomen.
Alternatively, they could be a vampire's equivalent of a juice box.

I was thinking more along the lines of "flying shrimp".

A shrimp is an arthropod, and physiologically similar to an insect, just aquatic.

A giant mosquito (say, the size of a cigar?) Would likely be cookable like a shrimp is, as long as you don't contemplate from what creature the blood in the abdomen came from.

Hmm. Item: Giant Mosqito blood pouch: Some fortresses prefer to not kill valuable workers, and dwarves are selected to give a pint of blood in donation. Vampiric dwarves carry these so they wont hamr working dwarves any worse than a donation

Or

Used by dwarves for blood transfusions, these things can be a life saver for a dwarf who has nearly bled out.

Giant Mosquito proboscis: Improvised weapons and suprisingly good ballista ammo, and as such dwarves value these highly.
