Weird dwarf names, born on 1st of Granite
« on: February 18, 2012, 08:03:21 pm »

I have a number of dwarves in my fort that have strange, foreign names. I'm sure Toady has added new names in the new version, as some dwarves have newish sounding names. However, these particular dwarves have very undwarven names. They look human, or even elven. And the strange thing is, they're all born on the 1st of Granite (which is basically January 1st). Is this a bug? Are they all vampires or something?

Here are most of their names:

Posek ņorricgo
Sesta Quenirurwa
Catten Berbakust
Escu Shebiuse
Tode Atrabuzņith
Cespi Ilodoņas

Actually, looking at all of my dwarves, there are quite a few that are born on the 1st of Granite, but have very dwarfy names, such as "Aban Lâvenkol".

Delving into the language raws, it appears that "posek" is humanspeak for "pants". "Quenir" is also means "seal", so some of my dwarves have human names. Interesting...

They're probably former members of human civilizations, who switched to the dwarf civilization in order to migrate to your fortress. Check their history and let us know.

As for the first of granite thing... Are they born in random different years?

In my game,

dwarves speak Russian,
elves speak French,
humans speak German,
and goblins speak Dutch.

So it's pretty easy to notice when names are mixed up, and I see it from time to time, but mostly in merchants.
So maybe it has something to do with migrants being historical in DFVD?

Imagine you're driving a car. Push the gas pedal to the floor. Close your eyes. Remain this way for ten minutes while turning the wheel at whim. This is Dwarf Fortress.
I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.
