Stone restriction in 34.02

z -> stone

I'm not getting all of the stone types listed here. Is something wrong or what? How to forbid microcline (or any other stone type) from being used?

Dumb guessing:  You may have to own (or have previously owned) at least one boulder of it first, or your civilization must have it available.  Otherwise, your dwarves may not know about it?

Alternatively, it's a bug.

Actually, it's the fix. Useless stone was never meant to show up in that screen, and instead of all that mess (which I, personally, am glad to see go) you can toggle obsidians economic status. As for stopping a stone type from being used, I suppose frequent forbiddings are the only way.

What? Really???

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There was a common mod that apparently replicated this bug in 40d. I've used this "bug" to save important stones in most of my forts. And now it has been TAKEN OUT ON PURPOSE??? Do my eyes deceive me?

It is less a case of it being taken out, and more a case of the correct things being put in there. To quote Quietust: "The Stones screen appears to exclude all inorganic materials whose only "special" characteristic is "Sharp blades", i.e. having MAX_EDGE >= 10000. ...the following binary patch switches the condition around (from "MAX_EDGE >= 10000" to "MAX_EDGE < 10000") and causes the Stone screen to exclude materials which cannot be used for "Sharp blades" (or anything else), effectively making the Stones screen behave the same way as it did back in 40d (and not listing "mundane" stones), which is probably how it was supposed to work all along..."

Then instead of being a "stone" tab in stocks it should be "sword capable stone" tab. If i read that correctly.

The "Unofficial Patch" for 31.25 included Quietust's fix for obsidian not showing up on the stone screen, but he also offered another fix, as mentioned, which returned functionality to the 40d method and allowed you to forbid random junk stone such as microcline from being used - which was of course a massive blessing for anyone with sensitive aesthetic senses.

Now that the obsidian issue is fixed, it does seem like the stone screen is only there to allow you to use normally forbidden material, such as iron ores, instead of allowing you to not use useless material, such as microcline.

Anyway, considering the nature of the game, i personally feel like Toady would not be against offering that extra level of freedom by including absolutely everything on the stone screen. However, i wouldn't expect it to be any sort of priority. I can imagine though, that once a more stable version of DF is out, that somebody may end up patching the stone screen back to the original 40d functionality again, and if that happens, i dare say i'll take advantage of it.

In the meantime, guess we'll just have to deal with it.
